  • This study was performed to analyze the distribution of air current speed, $CO_2$ concentration, and photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) in a closed transplants production system (CTPS) for producing quality transplants. And the effect of PPF on the growth of potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Dejima) plug seedlings was analyzed. Uniformity of the air current speed in CTPS was improved by installing perforated floors in duct for air circulating and by adjusting of air flow rate of the fan connected to air conditioning unit used in this study, Measured $CO_2$ concentrations were measured $409{\pm}13$, $950{\pm}25$, and $1,550{\pm}35\;{\mu}mol{\cdot}mol^{-1}$ for setting values of 400, 950, and $1,550\;{\mu}mol{\cdot}mol^{-1}$, respectively. Uniformity of PPF by adding each one the single fluorescent lamp of 20 W at both ends of the single fluorescent lamps of 40 W was highly improved. While the average PPF measured under the twin fluorescent lamps of 55 W installed at regular intervals of 10 cm was decreased by increasing the vertical distance from the lighting sources, the ratio of average PPF measured at both ends to PPF measured in the center was 74-79%. Five levels ($100{\pm}9$, $150{\pm}14$, $200{\pm}17$, $250{\pm}24$ and $300{\pm}31{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$) of PPF were provided to investigate the effect of PPF on plant height, fresh weight and dry weight of potato plug seedlings produced in CTPS. Plant height was decreased by increasing PPF. Maximum fresh weight and dry weight were shown under PPF of $250{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$. Thus PPF of $250\;{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ was enough to produce quality potato transplants under air temperature, photoperiod, and relative humidity of $20^{\circ}C$, 16/8 h, and 70%, respectively. It was concluded that quality indices such as plant height, fresh weight and dry weight could be improved by illuminating of adequate PPF from artificial lighting sources.

  • A field experiment was conducted to study both the distribution characteristics of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) in the soybean canopy and their relationships with dry matter production. The soybean cultivars 'Hwanggeumkong' and 'Paldalkong' were sown with the spaces of 60$\times$15cm and 30$\times$15cm at Suwon on May 20 and on June 20 in 1989. The ratio of PAR to the total shortwave radiation was estimated by the empirical equation derived from sunshine hours and direct incoming radiation. The functional relationships between the PAR interception and the leaf area index were expressed as a function of Beer's law. The extinction coefficients(k) in the functions ranged from 0.77 to 0.92. The values of k were greater at higher planting density, but they were affected neither by planting dates nor by varieties. The reflection ratio of PAR($\alpha$) was determined by the exponential function as below; $\alpha$=$\alpha$p-($\alpha$p-$\alpha$o) exp(-kㆍLAI) where $\alpha$p was the reflectance at the maximum LAI and $\alpha$o was that of the bare soil. The ap ranged from 0.025 to 0.035 and $\alpha$o ranged from 0.11 to 0.12, respectively. The reflected PAR ranged from 0.049 to 0.064 and the transmitted PAR ranged from 0.168 to 0.340 until maximum dry weights were observed. The slope from the linear regression of dry matter on absorbed PAR, conversion efficiency, ranged from 1.30 to 2.3g MJ$^{-1}$ during the growing season until maximum dry weight was reached. The total dry matter yield above ground (TDM) increased with the increases in the conversion efficiency. TDM was higher in Hwanggeumkong than Paldalkong and higher in the space of 30$\times$15cm than 60$\times$15cm, Paldalkong showed higher harvest index than Hwanggeumkong. than Hwanggeumkong.

  • The growth characteristics and appropriate fertilizer-managements in the rejuvenating bamboo grove were studied with Phyllostachys reticulata. The bamboo soil was the sandy loam with rich humus. In the fertilized plots, the N-fertilizer was significantly absorbed, and it was necessary to fertilize the K-fertilizer continuously. According to the development of rejuvenating after flowering, the temperature and relative illumination became lower. while the moisture became higher. The relationship between the diameter at eye height (D) and the culm length (H) of each bamboo can be expressed as follow; $H=2.5538D^{0.5031}$ The leaf area is the major factor for the production of the bamboo grove. Therefore in the rejuvenating grove, we should refrain form pruning or felling of not -flowering bamboo. The theoretical distribution of the internodal length was obtained by the distribution curve line of the internodal length derived from the regular distribution curve line. Relatively long and even internodal length was found in the fertilized plots 2 and 4. The relation between $D^2H$ and dry weight of culm or dry weight of the above ground part were given by linear regression in both relations respectively on the logarithmic coordinates, but the propertional relation was not established in these relations. The biomass of the above ground part obtained by the allometry method showed high values in the fertilized plots 2.5 and 6. The appropriate amounts of the three elements, N, P and K for the maximum dry matter were 24.19, 15.51, 8.63 kg/10a, respectively.

  • To estimate the aboveground biomass of Pinus rigida and Pinus rigida ${\times}$ taeda 22-year-old plantations, the experimental plots of $200m^2$ in size located in Kwangju of Jeonlanam-do were selected. Nine sample trees selected at each plot taking account of DBH distribution were felled and the diagram of oven-dry weight distribution of stem, branch, and needle for each 1m segment was constructed. The logarithmic regression equations between dry weight of each component (stems, branches, and needles) and the variable of $(DBH)^2{\cdot}H$ were obtained. The aboveground standing crops was estimated to be as much as 71.61 and 142.32 tons of dry matter per hectare in P. rigida and P. rigida ${\times}$ taeda stand respectively. The net production was estimated as 10.81 and 10.46 t/ha/yr and the net assimilation rate 1.32 and 1.00 kg/kg/yr in P. rigida and P. rigida ${\times}$ taeda stand respectively. And the efficiency of needles to produce stem was 0.97 and 0.81 kg/kg/yr in same order.

  • The characteristics of hydrospheric concentration and distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the Lake of Sihwa were investigated on this study. Sediment and Surface water samples were collected from upstream and downstream in Lake of Sihwa. The total PAHs concentrations of surface water were $21.9{\sim}49.6\;ng/L$ at upstream and $19.4{\sim}99.7\;ng/L$ at downstream, respectively. Most of the PAHs existed in the dissolved phase with average 87%. In the case of sediment samples, total PAHs concentrations were $51.7{\sim}325\;ng/g-dry$ at upstream and $13.4{\sim}72.3\;ng/g-dry$ at downstream, respectively. Low-and-middle molecular weight of PAHs were dominated in dissolved phase of the surface water, while middle-and-high molecular weight compounds were predominantly present in the particular phase of the surface water and sediment. The average slope obtained from the plots of log-log scaled dissolved/solid partition coefficient vs. octanol/water partition coefficient was $0.73{\pm}0.12$ and the slope from the water/sediment partition coefficient was $0.59{\pm}0.10$. These results indicated that distribution of PAHs between the dissolved phase and the solid phase was not at equilibrium as well as between water and sediment.

  • This paper presents an experimental study to evaluate the effect of palm oil on the selected basic physical-chemical and geotechnical properties of kaolin. The experimental findings are further compared with literature outcomes investigating similar properties of fine grained soils subjected to contamination by different types of oils. To this end, palm oil was mixed with oven dried kaolin samples-aiding oil's interaction (coating) with dry particles first, in anticipation to emphasize the effect of oil on the properties of kaolin, which would be difficult to achieve otherwise. Oil content was limited to 40% by dry weight of kaolin, supplemented at intervals of 10% from clean kaolin samples. Observations highlight physical particle-to-particle bonding resulting in the formation of pseudo-silt sized clusters due to palm oil's interaction as evinced in the particle size distribution and SEM micrographs. These clusters, aided by water repellency property of the oil coating the kaolin particles, was analyzed to show notable variations in kaolin's consistency-measured as liquid and plastic limits. Furthermore, results from compaction tests indicates contribution of oil's viscosity on the compaction behavior of kaolin - showing decrease in the maximum dry unit weight (${\gamma}_{d,max}$) and optimum moisture content ($w_{opt}$) values with increasing oil contents, while their decrease rates were directly and inversely proportional in ${\gamma}_{d,max}$ and $w_{opt}$ values with oil contents respectively. Comparative study in similar terms, also validates this lower and higher decrease rates in ${\gamma}_{d,max}$ and $w_{opt}$ values of the fine grained soils respectively, when subjected to contamination by oil with higher viscosity.

  • This study was conducted to obtain the most effective distribution of grain size and the optimum lime content for lime-soil stabilization. To achieve the aim, the change of consistency, the characteristics of compaction and unconfined compressive strength were tested by adding of 0, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 percent lime by weight for all soils adjusted by given ratios of sand to clay. The results obtained were as follows; 1. There was a tendency that the plasticity index of lime-soil mixture was decreased by increasing the amount of lime, whereas the liquid limit was varied irregularly and the plastic limit was increased. 2. With the addition of more lime, the optimum moisture content of lime-soil mixture was increased, and the maximum dry density was decreased. 3. The optimum lime content of lime-soil mixture was varied from soil to soil, and the less amount of small grain size, the less value of optimum lime content. 4. The optimum distribution of grain size for lime-soil mixture was in the soil, having the ratio of about 60 percent of cohesive clay and about 40 percent of sand by weight. 5. In the soil having fine grain size, the effect of curing appeared for long periods of time, whereas the increasing rate of unconfined compressive strength was great on the soil of coarse grain size in the earlier stage of curing period.

  • The surface sediments inside Songsanpo and Seogwipo Harbors, major harbors of Jeju Island, were collected three times (June, September and December, 2001) and analyzed for 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) recommended by US-EPA as priority pollutants to assess their distribution levels and their biological effects on the marine organisms, and to suggest their possible origins. The concentrations of total PAHs inside Songsanpo and Seogwipo Harbors ranged from 41 to 288 ng/g on a dry weight basis with a mean value of 121 ng/g and from 14 to 268 ng/g with a mean value of 119 ng/g, respectively, and the levels were low as compared with those in other areas of the world. The sedimentary PAHs may be correlated with organic carbon and mud content to some extent. Based on comparisons of individual and total concentrations with effects-based sediment quality guidelines, the potential for the biological effects on the marine organisms were expected to be very low. From the examinations of the four PAH origin indices, such as LMW /HMW (low molecular weight 2-3 ring PAHs over high molecular weight 4-6 ring PAHs), phenanthrene/anthracene ratio, fluoranthene/pyrene ratio, chrysene/benzo[a]anthracene ratio, it can be concluded that the sediment PAH contaminations were ascribed to both of pyrolytic and petrogenic origins.

  • Concentrations of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) were measured in seawater, sediment, and biota collected from Gunsan coast, Korea to investigate their occurrence, distribution, and risk of exposure to humans through seafood consumption. The total concentrations of PFASs in seawater, sediment, and biota ranged from 5.97 to 74.9 ng/L, 0.01 to 13.3 ng/g dry weight, and 0.02 to 5.73 ng/g wet weight, respectively. Predominant PFAS compounds differed across matrices, indicating that the distribution of PFASs in multiple environmental samples is governed by their carbon-chain length. The concentrations of PFASs in seawater were significantly negatively correlated with salinity (P<0.01), suggesting terrestrial input (including land-used PFASs) as the major source of PFAS contamination in coastal environments. The estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) through seafood consumption were 0.05 and 0.06 ng/kg body weight/day, respectively. The EDIs of PFOA and PFOS measured in this study were lower those the proposed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and Canada guidelines, indicating limited health risk for Korean population from PFASs through consumption of seafood from Gunsan coastal environment.
