The purpose of this study is to investigate the wear properties of Saffil/Al, Saffil/A12O3/Al and Saffil/SiC/Al hybrid metal matrix composites fabricated by squeeze casting method. Wear tests were done on a pin-on-disk friction and wear tester under both dry and lubricated conditions. The wear properties of the three composites were evaluated in many respects. The effects of Saffil fibers, $\textrm{Al}_2\textrm{O}_3$ particles and SiC particles on the wear behavior of the composites were investigated. Wear mechanisms were analyzed by observing the worn surfaces of the composites. The variation of coefficient of friction(COF) during the wear process was recorded by using a computer. Under dry sliding condition, Saffil/SiC/Al showed the best wear resistance under high temperature and high load, while the wear resistances of Saffil/Al and Saffi1/$\textrm{Al}_2\textrm{O}_3$/Al were very similar. Under dry sliding condition, the dominant wear mechanism was abrasive wear under mild load and room temperature, and the dominant wear mechanism changed to adhesive wear as load or temperature increased. Molten wear occurred at high temperature. Compared with the dry sliding condition, all three composites showed excellent wear resistance when lubricated by liquid paraffin. Under lubricated condition, Saffil/Al showed the best wear resistance among them, and its COF value was the smallest. The dominant wear mechanism of the composites under lubricated condition was microploughing, but microcracking also occurred to them to different extents.

This paper is studied to know wear mechanism in variation of austempering temperature and holding time of austempered ductile cast iron against mating material SM45C hardened by heat treatment. The wear tests were carried out by rubbing the annular surface of two test pieces in dry sliding friction. The wear mechanism was investigated by scanning electron microscopy and the retained austenite volume fraction was investigated by X-ray diffractometer. The experimental results show that the wear characteristics depend largely on the oxidation of the testing materials which is influenced by the sliding velocity and distance. The retained austenite has a negative effect during frictional contact because it has increased severe wear by softened surface layer. It is shown experimentally that hard metals have lower frictional resistance and hence the resistance to adhesion is increased due to stronger interatomic linking bonds and increase in the surface energy.
This study is to investigate the wear behaviors of thermally sprayed ceramic coating by a pin-on-disk wear testing machine. The test specimens were plasma sprayed TiO2 coating material on carbon steel substrate(S45C) with Ni-4.5%Al alloy bond coating. Wear characteristics, friction coefficient and wear rates, were conducted at the three kinds of loads and velosities. Wear environments were dry and lubrication friction. The friction coefficients of TiO2 coating specimen in dry friction were almost same according to increase the friction velocity. The wear rate increased when the friction force is high. In lubrication friction, the wear hardly occured and friction coefficient was about 0.1. The adhesiveness of TiO2 in lubrication friction is larger than that in dry one.

The wear behavior as the hardness of the sliding elements on the dry wear has been investigated using a dual leaf-spring. The materials of the specimens are used as ten kinds along their hardness. In this study, both upper and lower specimens have been used the same materials. Using experimental data, we figured the relationship between wear coefficient and friction coefficient, and the relationship between wear coefficient and friction temperature. Also we combined friction temperature and friction coefficient instead of wear coefficient. We substituted this into wear equation of Archard. The result had been derived a newly wear equation in using dual leaf-spring wear system.
The current investigation was performed to study sliding-wear-rate deviation (wear-rate data scatter) in carbon steels with various microstructures. Pure iron, 0.2 wt. % C steel, 0.45 wt. % C steel, and bearing steel (AISI52100) were used for the investigation. These steels possess different microstructures. Microstructures of the pure iron, two carbon steel and the bearing steel were full ferrite, ferrite + pearlite and full pearlite, respectively. Depending on the carbon content, the carbon steel had different pearlite-volume fractions. Dry sliding wear tests of the steel were conducted using a ball-on-disk wear tester at a sliding speed of 0.1 m/s using a bearing ball (AISI52100) as a counterpart. Applied load and sliding distance were 100 N and 300 m, respectively. More than three (up to twelve) tests were conducted for each steel under the same conditions, and the mean deviations in the wear rate of the steel (microstructure) were compared. The wear-rate deviation in the steel with ferrite + pearlite microstructure was higher than that with ferrite microstructure, and the deviation decreased with the increase of pearlite volume fraction. The pure iron and the bearing steel specimens showed much less deviation. The high deviation observed from the ferrite + pearlite steel was attributed to irregular subsurface-crack nucleation and growth at the interface between the two micro constituents (ferrite and pearlite) during the wear test.

Ti-Si-N coating layers were deposited onto WC-Co substrates by a hybrid system of arc ion plating (AIP) and sputtering techniques. The tribological behaviors of Ti-Si-N coating layers with various Si contents were investigated by the dry sliding wear experiments, which were conducted at three different sliding speeds, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5 m/s, against the steel and alumina balls. In the case of steel ball, the average friction coefficient slightly decreased with increasing the sliding speed regardless of Si content due to adhesive wear behavior between coating layer and steel ball. At constant sliding speed, the average friction coefficient decreased with increase of Si content. On the contrary, in the case of alumina ball, the average friction coefficient increased with increasing the sliding speed regardless of Si content, indicating that the abrasive wear behavior was more dominant when the coating layers slide against alumina ball. Through these experimental results, it was found that the tribological behaviors of Ti-Si-N coating layers were effected by factors such as Si content, sliding speed, and kinds of counterpart materials rather than the hardness of coating layer.
The friction and wear behavior of short carbon fiber reinforced polyetheretherketone was studied experimentally under dry sliding conditions against SCM440(AISI 4140) disks with a different surface roughness and hardness at the low sliding speeds and the high pressures on a pin-on-disk apparatus. Under the low disk surface roughness value the earsplitting noise and stick-slip were occurred. The increased adhesion friction and wear factor with stick-slip made the friction and wear behavior worse. Under the high disk surface hardness the break and falling-off of carbon fibers were accelerated. The carbon fibers fallen off from the matrix were ground into powder between two wear surfaces and this phenomenon caused a abrasive friction and wear factor to increase. So the friction and wear behavior became worse. With the transfer film made of wear particles formed on a disk, the carbon powder film formed on a pin lowered a friction coefficient.

Surface hardening of plain carbon steel (SM45C) by Laser are usually much finer and stronger than those of the base metals. The present study was under taken to investigate the wear resistance and a processing parameters such as, power density, pulse width, defocusing distance, and molten depth for surface modification of plain carbon steel. The wear test was carried out under experimental condition using the wear test device, and in which the annular surfaces of wear test specimens as well as mating specimen of alumina ceramics($Al_2O_3$) was rubbed in dry sliding condition. It is shown that molten depth and width depend on defocusing distance. The wear loss on variation of sliding speed was much in lower speed range below 0.2m/sec and in higher speed range above 0.7m/sec, but wear loss was little in intermediate speed range. It depends on oxidation speed and wear speed.
High temperature alloy steel such as Ni-Cr-Mo-V material has excellent properties of high strength and high heating resistance. It has been used for several military weapon components such as gun barrel of a warship, turbine rotor and turbine disk for nuclear power plant. Being curious about this material required excellent wear resistance and durability in extreme environmental conditions. A dry wear test at the ambient air and Ar gas conditions in the room temperature were performed in this study. What's more a lubricant wear test at different temperature was conducted. In addition that DLC was coated on Ni-Cr-Mo-V alloy steel substrate with a thickness of $3{\mu}m$, a property of it was compare with lubricant conditions. All the coefficient of friction and wear volume, comparing with DLC coated specimens. The test parameters were selected as follows: 10 N for normal load; 80 rpm for sliding wear speed; and 300 m for the sliding wear distance.
The tribological behaviour of monolithic SiC as well as SiC-TiC and SiC-TiC-$TiB_2$ particulate composite materials has been investigated in unlubricated oscillating sliding tests against $Al_2O_3$ at temperature in the range from room temperature up to $600^{\circ}C$. At temperatures below $600^{\circ}C$ the wear rate of the systems with the composite materials was up to 20 times lower than the wear of the $Al_2O_3$/SiC system and was dominated by the oxidation of the titanium phases. At $600^{\circ}C$ the oxidation rate of the TiC and -TEX>$TiB_2$ grains becomes predominant resulting in an enhanced wear rate of the composite rate of the TiC and TiB2 grains becomes predominant resulting in an enhanced wear rate of the composite materials. The coefficient of friction shows similar values for all materials of investigation, increasing from 0.25…0.3 at room temperature to 0.7…0.8 $600^{\circ}C$. The wear of the $Al_2O_3$/SiC system is mainly abrasive at temperatures above room temperature and is characterised by an enhanced wear of the alumina ball at $600^{\circ}C$.
