This experiment was conducted to determine the effect of variety and planting year on the nutritive values of corn fed to growing pigs. Four corn varieties examined in this experiment were planted in the same village located in Longhua County, Heibei Province, China, in 2012, 2013, and 2014, respectively. During each year, corn was hand-harvested in early October and sun dried to about 14% moisture content. Three batches of twenty-four barrows ($33.27{\pm}4.30$, $31.88{\pm}2.93$, $34.21{\pm}3.81kg$ body wight [BW] in 2012, 2013, and 2014, respectively) were used and allotted to a complete block design with 4 diets and 6 replicate pigs per diet. Pigs were individually placed in metabolic crates. The four experimental diets were formulated by mixing each variety of corn and vitamins and minerals, respectively. A five-day collection period followed a seven-day diet acclimation period. The results indicated that variety of corn significantly influenced the available energy content (digestible energy [DE] on dry matter basis, p<0.05; metabolizable energy (ME) on dry matter basis, p<0.05, respectively), and the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of organic matter (p<0.01), dry matter (p<0.05), gross energy (p<0.05), neutral detergent fiber (p<0.01), acid detergent fiber and ether extract (p<0.05). The planting year also significantly influenced the available energy contents (DE on dry matter basis, p<0.05; ME on dry matter basis, p<0.01, respectively) and the ATTD of neutral detergent fiber (p<0.01), acid detergent fiber (p<0.01), crude protein (p<0.01), and ether extract (p<0.01). No interaction was observed between the variety and planting year in DE and ME contents in corn. In conclusion, the variety and planting year significantly influenced the available energy and nutrient digestibility of corn fed to growing pigs.
Nine tons of fresh rice straw from early-maturing varieties was ensiled with 50 g urea $kg^{-1}$ DM straw in plastic bags immediately after threshing. Five months after storage, preserved straw was used to partially replace elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum, Schumach) for lactating cows. Eight crossbred Holstein lactating cows (75% of Holstein blood) in their second to fourth lactation and in mid-lactation were arranged in a balanced design with two squares consisting of $4\;periods{\times}4\;treatments$ (100% grass ad lib. as a control; 75% grass+urea treated fresh rice straw (UTrFRS) ad lib.; 50% grass+UTrFRS ad lib.; 25% grass+UTrFRS ad libitum) in one square. A concentrate supplement was given at a rate of 400 g per day per kg of milk produced. Samples of fresh straw taken in the field and UTrFRS and elephant grass taken at feeding time were evaluated in a degradation trial with 3 fistulated heifers (undefined blood ratio of crossbred of Sindhi and local yellow cattle). Straw preserved for 5-9 months was in nearly all cases of good quality. Crude protein (CP) content was increased 2.1 fold and 48 h dry matter loss (DML) was 20% higher compared to dry straw. Elephant grass cultivated intensively was low in DM content and 10% higher in 48 h DML compared to UTrFRS. Dry matter intake (DMI) was higher for the mixture of UtrFRS and Elephant grass, and highest when one-third of the roughage was UTrFRS. Higher DMI of mixed roughage diets was probably due to the low DM content of elephant grass in the sole grass roughage diet. Increasing substitution of elephant grass with UTrFRS up to 75% of the roughage component increased milk fat content and had no effect on milk yield and other milk composition parameters. Feeding UTrFRS, partially replacing elephant grass in the diets of lactating cows in the dry season can reduce the cost of roughage.

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of the various stage of growth on dry matter yield and chmical composition of forage oat(Avena sativa. L.). Seeds were planted on March 13 1993 on the Livestock Experimental Farm Keiymung junior college at keongsan Keongsangbukdo. Oat plant were harvested at various stages of maturity while the oat was in the premature stages. 1. Whole plant dry matter increased with advancing maturity. It was 11.8, 12.3, 14.9, 25.6 and 28.8% at before flag leaf emerged, flag leaf emerged, heads emerged, milk and dough stage., respectively. Dry matter increased very little during from before flag leaf emerged to heads emerged, after which it increased rapidly until the plant was dough stage. 2. Leaf weight ratio decreased with advancing maturity from before flag leaf emerged to dough, varied fmm 58 to 1 1%. Grain(with lemma, palea) increased with advancing maturity from heads emerged to dough, varied from 7 to 43%. 3. The content of cmde protein decreased during the stages of growth until milk(P<.OS), and then changed very little with advancing maturity. 4. The content of NDF and ADF increased rapidly during the early growth period until heading(P<.05) and then decreased due to the increase in carbohydrate storage in the grain. 5. The dry matter yields per ha increased with advancing maturity, it was 2,420, 4,380, 7,190, 13,130 and 14,530kg at before flag leaf emerged, flag leaf emerged, heads emerged, milk and early dough, respectively. Significant difference has been obtained among stages of growth(P< .05). 6. According to the results obtained from this study, it is suggested that milk stage of maturity is higher in dry matter yields would be recomendable for spring oat for silage.

To find out the effect of NPK-fertilization level and utilization method of pasture plants on the productivity of dry matter and nutrient of forages in hilly pasture, this experiment was arranged as a split block design with six treatments of 2 mainplots(N-$P_2O_5$-$K_2O$=210-150-180(wntrol), 280-200-240Kg/ha) and 3 subplots (cutting, grazing cutting+grazing alternative), and conducted at hilly land in Yeoju, Kyonggi Province 6om February, 1992 to October, 1993. In the treatment of grazing the early growth and cover degree of pasture plants wintered were more favorable. With increased NPK-application for two years, the average dry matter(DM) yield of 9,862kglha was incerased by 18% than that of the control, and the average DM yield of the cutting treatment of 10,434kaa was higher than that of others. In all treatments for two years, the average DM yield was composed of 94.0~95.1% grasses, 1.8~2.0% legumes and 2.8~4.2% weeds. The crude protein and energy productivity of forages in the treatment with increased NPK-fertilizer application increased by 20~23% than those of control, and those of cutting treatment were greatly increased than those of the grazing treatment. The average mineral content of forages in all treatments tended to be similar, Ca and Mg content and Ca/P ratio were slightly lower, and K content and K/(Ca+Mg) equivalent ratio of forages tended to be higher than the most desirable value of forages.
Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.) is known to produce the highest total digestible mutrients (TDN) yield among summer grain legumes in Jeju area but little is known about the effects of cultural practices on forage yield and quality. A determinate soybean cv. Baegunkong was planted on 5 June, 20 June, and 3 July and grown at four plant densities (30, 50, 70 and 90 plants $m^{-2}$ in 1998 in Jeju to evaluate the effects of planting date and plant density on the yield and quality of soybean forage. Days to flowering decreased from 47 to 38 days, average plant height from 61 to 51cm and main stem diameter from 6.31 to 5.00mm as planting was delayed from 5 June to 3 July. Average plant height quadratically increased from 45 to 62cm as plant density increased from 30 to 90 plants $m^{-2}$. Planting date did not affect the average dry matter, crude protein, and TDN yields. The average dry matter and TDN yields displayed a quadratic response to plant density and the optimum plant density for both dry matter and TDN yields was estimated about 60 plants $m^{-2}$. Plant density had no effect on crude protein yield. Planting date did not significantly influence forage quality. The crude protein content was not significantly influenced by plant density. Increasing plant density slightly increased acid detergent fiber content but slightly decreased TDN content.

Many onion growers and researchers assert that differences in soil type, agricultural practices, weather, and duration of prolonged onion cultivation in a particular field could affect onion bulb quality. This study evaluates the bulb quality of onions grown in different regions and determines the correlations between bulb characteristics and postharvest loss during cold and ambient storage. Soil and onion bulbs were collected from fields in six onion growing regions in Korea, during the growing season of 2011-2012. The fresh weight, dry matter content, and carbon (C), sulfur and magnesium contents of the onion bulbs were significantly affected by the location in which they were grown. Bulbs grown in Muan had the greatest number of scales, thinnest scale thickness, and the highest total soluble solids (TSS) and total flavonoids (TF). Bulbs originating from Jecheon had the lowest pyruvic acid (PA), total phenolics and TF. Storage loss of bulbs from the different regions was similar in refrigerated storage, but differed in ambient temperature storage. Bulb fresh weight was positively correlated with scale thickness (r = 0.617) and cold storage loss (CSL; r = 0.398). Dry matter content was positively correlated with C (r = 0.958) and TF (r = 0.256) contents, while it was negatively correlated with CSL (r = -0.424). CSL was primarily affected by the fresh weight, as well as the dry matter, C, and PA contents of the bulbs, while ambient storage loss was primarily influenced by the amount of TSS.

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of seeding dates and rates on the productivity and nutritive value of hairy vetch(Vicia villosa Roth) at experimental field of Grassland and Forage Crops Division, National Livestock Research Institute, RDA, Suwon from 1999 to 2000. The experimental design was consisted of split-plot design with three replications. The main plot was seeding dates(25 Aug., 15 Sep. and 5 Oct.) and the subplot was seeding rates(20, 30 and 40 kg/ha). Late seeding dates increased the plant height and delayed the flowering stage as 1 or 2 days. The dry matter(DM) content was decreased with low seeding rates, and the trend was same in the all plots. Average crude protein(CP) content was $24.1\%$ and increased with delayed seeding date and lower seeding rate. The content of acid detergent fiber(ADF) and neutral detergent fiber(NDF) was increased with higher seeding rate, but seeding date did not affect. In vitro dry matter digestibility(IVDMD) of hairy vetch tended to decrease with high seeding rate, and total digestible nutrient(TND) did not show significant difference among seeding rates. Average relative feed value(RFV) of hairy vetch showed 140 which means very high quality. Dry matter and CP yield was decreased with delayed seeding date. The results of this experiments indicated that seeding in middle-August with 40 kg/ha would be recommended to produce the highest yield and quality f3r the cultivation of hairy vetch in middle part of Korea

This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of harvesting date and additives on the quality of fall sown oat(Avena sativa L.) silage at the department of animal resources science, college of life resources science, Woosuk University, Wanju &om August, 1997 to March, 1998. The experiment was arranged in a split plot design with three replications. The main plots consisted of the harvesting date such as 15 Oct., 23 Oct. and 2 Nov. and different additives as subplots(control, wheat bran, formic acid, lactic acid bacteria, and wilting). The results otained are summarized as follow : The fiesh and dry matter yield of oat were increased by harvesting date delayed, then fiesh and dry matter yield at 2 Nov. were highest as 36,733 and 7,29Okg/ha, respectively. The dry matter content of oat silage was increased significantly by harvesting date delayed(P< 0.05), and DM content of wheat bran and wilting treatment was high at every harvest date. The DM loss was lower in LAB, formic acid and wheat bran treatment, but on significant difference was found among harvesting date(P< 0.05). Average pH of silage harvested at 23 Oct. was lowest as 4.06, and the quality(CP, NDF, ADF, and IVMDM) of oat silage was decreased by harvesting date delayed. The content of acetic acid was no difference among harvesting date, but butyric acid was decreased and lactic acid was increased at 23 Oct. harvest. The result of this study indicate that oat harvested at booting-heading stage of maturity with wilting wheat bran, and LAB could be recommended as producing high quality of oat silage.
The observations on the seasonal fluctuation and distributional characteristic of organic matters on surface sediments and its origin were carried out at the 25 stations in Keogeum-sudo, southern coast of Korean Peninsula from February to October in 1993. I made an analysis on the environmental factors for surface sediments such as temperature, ignition loss, chemical oxygen demand, pheopigment, total sulphide, water content, mud content in grain size, COD/IL ratio and COD/sulphide ratio. The results are as follows ; 1) The range of temperature on the surface sediments was between 6.2${\circ}C$ and 24.6${\circ}C$. The highest mean temperatuer of mud was 24.0${\circ}C$ in summer, the lowest 6.6${\circ}C$ in winter. 2) Ignition loss(IL) fluctuated between 1.2% in winter and 16.8% in spring, that is to say, the seasons of increasing in temperature were very high ignition loss. 3) Chemical oxygen demand(COD) showed the highest mean value of 20.52 mg/g dry in summer within the range of 15/46~32.78 mg/g dry, while showed the lowest of 5.79 mg/g dry in winter within the range of 7.4~17.39 mg/g dry. 4) Pheopigment concentrations showed the highest mean value of 4.85 $\mu\textrm{g}$/g dry in autumn within the range of 0.84~9.21 $\mu\textrm{g}$/g dry, while it did the lowest mean value of 1.97 $\mu\textrm{g}$/g dry in summer within the range of 0.23~4.83 $\mu\textrm{g}$/g dry. 5) Total sulphide (H2S) fluctuated between no detect(ND) in spring, and 2.43 mg/g dry in sutumn. The highest mean value was 0.68 mg/g dry in sutumn, the lowest was 0.16 mg/g dry in spring. 6) Water content(WC) and mud content in grain size showed the mean value of 43.2% within the range of 26.5~59.7% and 91.0% within the range of 57.8~99.2%, respectively. 7) By the analytical results on the source of organic matter, it had been dumped from the seaweed farms in Keogeum-sudo coastal waters.

Plant-based, grain-free, and gluten-free diets have been the focus of recent research, as part of the premiumization trend in dog food. However, the lack of comprehensive information regarding carbohydrates in dog food makes it difficult to produce nutritionally balanced meals. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the nutritional value of carbohydrate ingredients commonly used in commercial dog foods. First, using data from Euromonitor, we investigated the trends in the dry dog food industry and analyzed the annual volume of dry dog food sales, as well as the dog population from 2010 to 2021 in Korea. The growth of the market was greatest in 2021, when the total value of sales of premium dry dog food was 254.3 billion KRW (Korean won) more than in 2010. In addition, sales of dry dog food by age category were marked by a significant increase (404.8%) in the market for dry food for senior dogs. Second, we examined the frequency of carbohydrate ingredients used in dry dog food and conducted a proximate analysis of the top 10 most frequently used ingredients. Subsequently, we analyzed the crude protein, crude fat, and nitrogen-free extract in the carbohydrate ingredients based on dry matter (DM) and calculated the ratio of metabolic energy content supplied from each nutrient in the carbohydrate ingredients. The ratio of metabolic energy content in the carbohydrate ingredients indicated that mung beans had the highest crude protein content (31.3%), whereas oats exhibited the highest crude fat content (23.3%). Sweet potatoes had the highest nitrogen-free extract content, measuring at 93.6%. The results of this study are expected to provide a valuable foundation for the growth and development of the domestic dog food industry, while also contributing to a deeper understanding of the specific role of each ingredient as a carbohydrate source.
