To improve the water resistance of melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) resins, different levels of blocked polymeric 4,4 diphenyl methane diisocyanate (B-pMDI) were blended with MUF resins to prepare B-pMDI/MUF hybrid adhesives, and their adhesion performances were evaluated for the surface lamination of fancy veneer on plywood. FT-IR spectra showed that the de-blocked -NCO groups reacted with the -OH of hydroxymethyl groups of the MUF resins to form urethane bonds at 2% B-pMDI/MUF, which was detected before and after their hydrolysis. The mass loss after the hydrolysis consistently decreased as the B-pMDI level increased, indicating an improvement in the water resistance. As the B-pMDI level increased, the activation energy of hybrid adhesives decreased, which improved the reactivity of the hybrid adhesives. Additionally, the water resistance improvement of the hybrid adhesives increased the tensile shear strength of the surface laminated plywood in semi-water proof and water-proof by 23 % and 8 %, respectively, at 2% B-pMDI level. This was likely due to the urethane linkages in the hybrid adhesives. However, the formaldehyde emission from plywood panels bonded with the hybrid adhesives increased in the dry state, indicating incomplete curing of the hybrid adhesives.

I. Objectives This study investigated the effect of rewetting agent on dentinal microtensile bond strengths(${\mu}TBS$), using one bottle adhesives. II. Materials and Methods Non caries human molars were sectioned to exposed the superficial dentin surfaces, etched 15 seconds using 32% phosphoric acid and 10 seconds rinsed. Samples were randomly divided into two groups according to adhesives (Single Bond, One-Step) used. Each group were subdivided into five groups by different dentin surface treatment:15 second dry(D), blot dry(BD) or 15 second dry and rewetted with distrilled water(DW), Gluma Desensitizer(GD) and Aqua-Prep(AP) during 30 second, respectively.(omitted)
This study was to measure formaldehyde emission and bonding strength of plywoods manufactured with urea-melamine formaldehyde adhesives, which were made from three different mixing ratios of urea and melamine, and with four different formaldehyde/urea-melamine molar ratios of 1.0,1.1,1.2 and 1.4. The results were as follows 1. Amount of formaldehyde emission was the lowest at the first method of molar ratio(F/(M+U)) 1.0. Amounts of formaldehyde emission of experimental manufactured adhesives were lower than that of commercial adhesive. 2. Bonding strength of dry specimen was the highest at the first method of molar ratio(F/(M+U)) 1.4. Dry bonding strength of molar ratio(F/(M+U)) 1.4 was similar to commercial adhesive. 3. Bonding strength of wet specimen was the highest at the second method of molar ratio(F/(M+U)) 1.4. Bonding strength of wet specimen used by the third method of molar ratio(F/(M+U)) 1.4 was almost equal to commercial adhesive.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of moistening and air-drying of acid conditioned dentin and enamel on the marginal microleakage. In this study, Class V cavity were prepared on both buccal and lingual surface of sixty extracted human premolars with cementum margin. These specimens were randomly devided into three groups and three dentin adhesives(Scotchbond Multi-Purpose, All bond 2, Prisma Universal Bond 3) were applied to each group. The specimens in each group were subdevided into four groups (Wet/primed, Dry/primed, Wet/not primed, Dry/not primed) and the etched dentin and enamel surface were treated these four surface treatments prior to the placement of a bonding agent or adhesive. Wet/primed group was simply blot-dried with a damp facial tissue before primer placement ; Dry/primed group was air dried for 30 seconds before the placement of a primer ; Wet/not primed group and Dry/not primed group were not primed after blot dried and air dried for 30 seconds each group. The bonding agent and composite resin were applied for each group. All specimens were exposed to 500 cycle of thermal stress. Specimens were placed in a silver nitrate solution and then sectioned buccolingually through the center of the restoration. The dye penetrations of the specimens were observed with a stereo microscope. The statistical test were applied to the results using a one way analysis variance (ANOVA) and Duncan's multiple range test. The aspects of silver ion penetration into the resin/dentin interface were examined under scanning electron microscopy. The results were as follows. 1. In all groups, the enamel margin showed significantly lower leakage value than the cementum margin (p<0.05). 2. Regardless of various surface treatment and dentin adhesives, there was no significant difference at the enamel margins (p>0.05). 3. At the dentin margins, the leakage values of Dry/not primed group showed significantly higher than that of the other groups (p<0.05). The leakage values of Wet/primed group showed significantly lower than that of the other groups, but, there was no significant difference between Wet group and Dry group. 4. There was no significantly difference between the dentin adhesives regarding the surface treatments in all groups(p>0.05). 5. On the backscatterd scanning electron microscopy observation, the penetration of the silver ion occured at the bonding resin/dentin interface. In the Wet/primed group, resindentin hybrid zone and resin penetration into the dentin was observed. The resin tags were compactively formed to a thickness of $3\sim4{\mu}m$ at the upper part of dentinal tubules. In the Dry/primed group, the thickness of the hybrid zone and the diameter, depth of the resin tags diminished. In the Non-primed groups, the hybrid zone was not identified and few resin tag was observed. There was the gap formation in the resin/dentin interface.
To investigate the adhesion effect of various kinds and contents of polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanates (pMDIs) on adhesion performance, wood adhesives (A-1~5) were synthesized and characterized. As results, when the amount of pMDI increased in adhesives, the dry tensile strength was found to be proportionally increased sustaining at around $16.0{\sim}21.6kgf/cm^2$. The polyurethane (PU) resin, which used M11S as a source of pMDI showed the best wet tensile strength at $11.9kgf/cm^2$ and cyclic boil tensile strength at $8.1kgf/cm^2$, which satisfied the requirement of over $7kgf/cm^2$. Thermal properties of the rice powder (RP) based polyurethane resins were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Thermal stability of polyurethane resins increased to $250^{\circ}C$ with adding pMDIs. The more pMDI (M5S) was added to adhesive, the higher thermal stability of the resin was observed by TGA.
Generally, paper multilayering was performed before wet pressing process. However, sheets whose characteristics are different could be put together at the dry state by adhesives for the specialty paper products. In this paper, potential adhesives such as PVAc, oxidised starch, latex, and PVA were chosen and multilayering of several sheets was performed in laboratory scale. The effects of base paper properties and the composition of adhesives on the physical properties of multilayering paper were investigated. Physical properties such as bonding strength and stiffness were measured. For the practical reasons, mill trial was also executed. According to the result of laboratory tests and mill trial test, the physical properties of multilayered paper were greatly affected by the composition of adhesives and it was found that PVAc showed the best performance in all its aspects among four adhesives. Oxidised starch had an advantage of high stiffness and PVA gave high bonding strength to the multilayered paper. And it was also found that the properties of base paper showed the great influences not only on multilayering process, but also on the physical properties of the multilayered paper.
We reported the direct effect of intrinsic surface energy of dry adhesive material to the Van der Waals and capillary forces contributions of the total adhesion force in an artificial gecko-inspired adhesion system. To mimic the gecko foot we fabricated tilted nanohairy structures using both lithography and ion beam treatment. The nanohairy structures were replicated from Si wafer mold using UV curable polymeric materials. The control of nanohairs slanting angles was based on the uniform linear argon ion irradiation to the nanohairy polymeric surface. The surface energy was studied utilizing subsequent conventional oxygen ion treatment on the nanohairy structures which resulted in gradient surface energy. Our shear adhesion test results were found in good agreement with the accepted Van der Waals and capillary forces theory in the gecko adhesion system. Surface energy would give a direct impact to the effective Hamaker constant in Van der Waals force and the filling angle (${\varphi}$) of water meniscus in capillary force contributions of gecko inspired adhesion system. With the increasing surface energy, the effective Hamaker constant also increased but the filling angle decreased, resulting in a competition between the two forces. Using a simple mathematical model, we compared our experimental results to show the quantitative contributions of Van der Waals and capillary forces in a single adhesion system on both hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces. We found that the Van der Waals force contributes about 82.75% and 89.97% to the total adhesion force on hydrophilic and hydrophobic test surfaces, respectively, while the remaining contribution was occupied by capillary force. We also showed that it is possible to design ultrahigh dry adhesive with adhesion strength of more than 10 times higher than apparent gecko adhesion force by controlling the surface energy and the slanting angle induced-contact line of dry adhesive the materials.
