  • Since a diesel vehicle scandal related to the 'A' automobile company was issued in the United States in 2015, many countries have been interested in emission defeat devices. Being embedded in some diesel passenger cars sold in Korea, a defeat device for exhaust gas may have influence on both fuel economy and NOx emissions. In order to examine such effects, we carried out laboratory indoor tests as well as real road driving tests using four models of 'A' automobile company which may employ defeat devices. Those tests were performed observing the test modes of FTP-75, HWFET, and NEDC. Although fuel economy and NOx emissions according to indoor tests comply with the suggested tolerance, the findings in the real road driving tests do not satisfy the tolerance. Along with the results provided in this study, further evaluation may be necessary to investigate the noticeable difference between the indoor and real road tests.

  • This paper suggests a car-following algorithm for urban environment, with multiple target candidates. Until now, advanced driver assistant systems (ADASs) and self-driving technologies have been researched to cope with diverse possible scenarios. Among them, car-following driving has been formed the groundwork of autonomous vehicle for its integrity and flexibility to other modes such as smart cruise system (SCC) and platooning. Although the field has a rich history, most researches has been focused on the shape of target trajectory, such as the order of interpolated polynomial, in simple single-lane situation. However, to introduce the car-following mode in urban environment, realistic situation should be reflected: multi-lane road, target's unstable driving tendency, obstacles. Therefore, the suggested car-following system includes both in-lane preceding vehicle and other factors such as side-lane targets. The algorithm is comprised of three parts: path candidate generation and optimal trajectory selection. In the first part, initial guesses of desired paths are calculated as polynomial function connecting host vehicle's state and vicinal vehicle's predicted future states. In the second part, final target trajectory is selected using quadratic cost function reflecting safeness, control input efficiency, and initial objective such as velocity. Finally, adjusted path and control input are calculated using model predictive control (MPC). The suggested algorithm's performance is verified using off-line simulation using Matlab; the results shows reasonable car-following motion planning.

  • We introduce tightly-coupled GNSS-LiDAR-Inertial state estimator, which is capable of SLAM (Simultaneously Localization and Mapping) and autonomous driving. Long term drift is one of the main sources of estimation error, and some LiDAR SLAM framework utilize loop closure to overcome this error. However, when loop closing event happens, one's current state could change abruptly and pose some safety issues on drivers. Directly utilizing GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) positioning information could help alleviating this problem, but accurate information is not always available and inaccurate vertical positioning issues still exist. We thus propose our method which tightly couples raw GNSS measurements into LiDAR-Inertial SLAM framework which can handle satellite positioning information regardless of its uncertainty. Also, with NLOS (Non-light-of-sight) satellite signal handling, we can estimate our states more smoothly and accurately. With several autonomous driving tests on AGV (Autonomous Ground Vehicle), we verified that our method can be applied to real-world problem.

  • Distinct features in heart rate signals during the driver's wake and sleep states could provide an initiative for the development of a safe driving systems such as drowsiness detecting sensor in a smart wheel. We measured ECG from health subjects ($23.5{\pm}2.5$ in age) during the wake and drowsiness states. The proposed method is able to detect R waves and R-R interval calculation in the ECG even when the signal includes in abnormal signals. Heart rate variability(HRV) was investigated for the time domain and frequency domains. The STD HR(0.029), NN50(0.044) and VLF power(0.0018) of the RR interval series of the subjects were significantly different from those of the control group (p < 0.05). In conclusion, there are changes in heart rate from wake to drowsiness that are potentially to be detected. The results in our study could be useful for the development of drowsiness detection sensors for effective real-time monitoring.

  • The discharge characteristics of pulse-driven coplanar micro barrier discharges for an ultraviolet (UV) light source using Ne-Xe mixture have been investigated using a two-dimensional fluid simulation at near-atmospheric pressure. The densities of electrons, the radiative excited states, the metastable excited states, and the power loss are investigated with the variations of gas pressure and the gap distance. With a fixed gap distance, the number of the radiative states $Xe^*(^3P_1)$ increases with the increasing driving voltage, but this number shows weak dependency on the gas when that pressure is over 400 Torr. However, the number of the radiative states increases with the increase of the gap distance at a fixed voltage, while the power loss decreases. Therefore, a long gap discharge has higher efficiency for UV generation than does a short gap discharge. A slight change in the electrode tilt angle enhances the number of radiative species 2 or 3 times with the same operation conditions. Therefore, the intensity and efficiency of the UV light source can be controlled independently by changing the gap distance and the electrode structure.

  • This paper presents the on-vehicle information system that displays the states of the vehicle in brief words instead of symbols. Main functions of this system include a system check function, trip function, warning function, and clock function. With this system, a driver can obtain all sorts of useful information related to various conditions of the vehicle, and if any problem arises in the vehicle, he can recognize it by the displayed words with a warning sound. Also, this system is very helpful for safety driving because it displays whatever a driver wants to have concerning trip information. By experimental test and driving test, the development system shows good results for each function.

  • Vehicle occupant exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) continues to be the subject of active research because of higher levels of VOCs in vehicles than in the surrounding ambient atmosphere and because of potential health risk. This study identified in-auto and in-bus exposures to 6 selected aromatic VOCs during rush-hour driving. A bus service route was selected to include an urban route (Taegu) and a suburban route (Hayang-Up) to satisfy the specified criteria of this study. The most abundant VOC concentration measured in this study was toluene. In-vehicle target Voc concentrations of the urban route were significantly different from those of the suburban segment. On the sum of average of the target VOCs, in-auto VOC concentration was about 1.5 times higher than in-bus VOC concentration. Based on the sum of average, in-automobile target VOC concentrations of this study were within the range of previous studies conducted in several cities of the United States, while in-bus VOC concentrations of this study were much lower than those of Taipei in Taiwan. In-vehicle VOC concentrations of present study significantly varied with sampling days, while they did not varied with driving period.

  • A novel current-type data driver for active matrix organic light emitting diode (AMOLED) is proposed for current uniformity enhancement among its output channels. New architecture is composed of shadow DACs that precharge output stages, a single-real DAC that correct the output level to a real target current level and output stages that operate in 3 states of sampling, correcting and driving. Simulation results show that the proposed driving method and circuits improve the current uniformity among output channels of a current-type driver IC.

  • In this study, the overall states of the airflow when a truck with or without side pairing is driven at a maximum speed of 90 km/h, regulated by domestic law, were investigated through computational fluid dynamics numerical analysis. All the tested models showed that the airflow went under the truck body; specifically, the air did not flow along the underside to the rear of the truck but through the sides of its underside. The drag with the drag coefficient at model 3 was clearly higher than those for the other two models. The results of this study could help to improve the truck performance by reducing its resistance against the air flown from it in driving itself.

  • In this study, a variety of characteristics were shown experimentally under mechanically unbalnced states expected in a practicl system that linear motor is used as a driving motor of magneticlly levitated transit and the design criterion of the linear motor has been proposed. Since, with slip being at 0.1, end effect was reduced a little to increase thrust about 6.14 percents in case thatsinusoidal current conducted 5[A] in short coil at each end of linear motor for compensation of it, if the ratio of sinusoidl current versus input currents is adjusted properly, it is thought that this method small be effective one. And if the gap of exit region is bigger than that of entry region, end effect will be reduced. As a result, more effective driving will be obtained.
