A Study on Effects of the Driver's Emotion on the Driving Behavior (운전자의 정서가 운전행동에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구: 운전스트레스 대처행동을 중심으로)

  • The reasons of traffic accidents can be classified into the vehicle, road environment and human factors. In development of vehicle and road technologies, the human factor is the most important. The emotion research recently carried out showed that emotions play an important role in human judgment and decision making. They are also expected to partly determine driving behavior. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of drivers' emotions on their driving behavior. The results of this study showed that positive emotions do not affect driving behavior. As for negative emotions, however, safe driving(SD) and comfort driving(CD) factors have a negative correlation, and violence driving(VD) and regulation violation(RO) factors have a positive correlation. This study is significant as a basic study for establishing and determining a policy for reducing traffic accidents and for educating drivers.

  • This study aimed to verify the criteria of the driver monitoring systems proposed by UNECE ACSF informal working group and the ministry of land, infrastructure, and transport of South Korea using driving behavior data. In order to verify the criteria, we investigated the safety regulations of driver monitoring systems in a conditional autonomous vehicle and found that the driver monitoring measures were related to eye blinks times, head movements, and eye closed duration. Thus, we took two different experimental data including real-world driving and simulator-based drowsy driving behaviors in previous studies. The real-world driving data were used for analyzing blink times and head movement intervals, and the drowsiness data were used for eye closed duration. In the drowsy driving study, 10 drivers drove approximately 37 km of a monotonous highway (about 22 min) twice. The results suggested that the appropriate duration of eyes continuously closed was 4 seconds. The results from real-world driving data were presented in the other paper - part 1.

A Study on Torsional Characteristics of the Car Body Types at Cornering Motion (선회주행 시 차체의 비틀림 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Elastic deformation and fatigue damage can cause the permanent deformation of a kart's frame during turning, affecting the kart's driving performance. A kart's frame does not contain any suspension or differential devices and, therefore, the dynamic behavior caused by torsional deformation when driving along a curve can strongly affect these two kinds of deformations. To analyze the dynamic behavior of a kart along a curved section, the GPS trajectory of the kart is obtained and the torsional stress acting on the kart-frame is measured in real time. The mechanical properties of leisure and racing karts are investigated by analyzing their material properties and conducting a tensile test. The torsional stress concentration and frame distortion are investigated through a stress analysis of the frame on the basis of the obtained results. Leisure and racing karts are tested in each driving condition using driving analysis equipment. The behavior of a kart when being driven along a curved section is investigated through this test. Because load movement occurs owing to centrifugal force when driving along a curve, torsional stress acts on the kart's steel frame. In the case of a leisure kart, the maximum torsional stress derived from the torsional fatigue limit was found to be 230 MPa, and the torsional fatigue limit coefficient was 0.65 when driving at a speed of 40 km/h. Furthermore, the driving elements during the cornering of a kart were measured based on an actual auto-test after installing a driving measurement system, and the driving behavior of the kart was analyzed by measuring its vertical displacement.

The Effects of Driving Behavior Determinants on Dangerous Driving and Traffic Accidents in the Reckless Drivers Group: A Path Analysis Study (사고 및 음주운전자들의 운전행동결정요인 특성이 위험행동 및 교통사고에 미치는 영향: 경로분석 연구)

  • Speeding and drunken driving make drivers fail to detect hazards and cope with various driving situations. These behaviors also raise the possibility of being involved in traffic accidents and tend to increase the number of fatalities. The authors compared the driving behavior determinants of a rockless drivers group, consisting of individuals who have committed traffic accidents or offended regulations through drunken driving, with a normal drivers group. In the results, the reckless drivers group showed high scores of 'speeding' and 'drunken driving', and they also stated that they had more experiences of speeding, drunken driving and traffic accidents. In the path analysis study, it was found that the impacts of the rockless drivers group's 'risk sensitivity' and 'situational adaptability' on traffic accidents were stronger than those of normal drivers. This means 'risk sensitivity' and 'situational adaptability' can explain the origins of traffic accidents better in the reckless drivers group than accidents of the normal drivers group.

Study on Torsion due to Automotive Body Type at Track Driving (궤적주행 시 차체 종류에 따른 비틀림에 관한 연구)

  • Because there is no suspension and differential devices at cart body, the deformation of the frame happened during kart driving affects the driving performance caused by the elastic deformation and the fatigue life of kart frame resulted from the permanent deformation. The dynamic behavior of kart caused by the torsional deformation during circular driving is the important factor of these two kinds of deformations. In order to analyze the dynamic behavior of kart at this curved section, GPS is used to trace the track of kart and the torsional stress at kart-frame has been measured with real time. The mechanical properties of kart-frames for leisure and racing are investigated through material property analysis and tensile test. Torsional stress concentration and frame distortion are investigated through stress analysis on frame on the basis of study result. The real karts for leisure and racing kart are also tested in each driving condition by using the driving analysis equipment. The driving behavior of kart at the curved section are investigated through this test. As the phenomenon of load movement due to centrifugal force at car is happened during circular driving, the torsional stress occurs at cart steel frame.

An Investigation for Driving Behavior on the Exit-ramp Terminal in Urban Underground Roads Using a Driving Simulator (주행 시뮬레이터를 활용한 도심 지하도로 유출연결로 접속부 주행행태 분석)

  • Even though driving behaviors in underground roads can be significantly different from ground roads, existing underground roads follow the design guidelines of ground roads. In this context, this study investigates the driving behaviors of the exit-ramp terminal of urban underground roads using a driving simulator. Virtual driving experiments were performed by analyzing scenarios between the underground and ground road environments. The experiments' driving behavior data for each geometry section are compared and validated through a statistical significance test. This test showed that the speed in the underground road environment is relatively low, and the LPM tends to move away from the adjacent tunnel wall. Based on these findings, this study suggests implications and feasible solutions for improving driver's safety in the exit-ramp terminal of the underground roads.

A Study on the Analysis of Dangerous Driving Behavior and Traffic Accident Risk according to the Operation Characteristics of Commercial Freight Vehicles (사업용 화물자동차 운행특성에 따른 위험운전행동 및 교통사고 위험도 분석 연구)

  • This study analyzed the causal relationship among operating characteristics of commercial freight vehicles, dangerous driving behaviors, and traffic accident risk. The study applied the existing accident cause and prevention theory to arrive at this relationship. Data related to working characteristics of driver, driving experience, driving ability, driving psychology, vehicle characteristics (size), dangerous driving behavior, and traffic accidents were collected from 303 commercial freight vehicle drivers. Working characteristics and dangerous driving behavior data are based on the driver's digital driving record. The traffic accident data is based on the insurance accident data reflecting actual traffic accidents. First, a structural equation model was built and verified using the model fitness index. Then, the developed model was used to analyze the causal relationship between multiple independent and dependent variables simultaneously. Four dangerous driving behaviors (sudden deceleration, sudden acceleration, sudden passing, and sudden stop) were found to be highly related to traffic accidents. The results further indicate that it is necessary to establish a safety management policy and intensive management for small-sized freight vehicles, drivers with insufficient driving ability, and drivers with dangerous driving behaviors. Such policy and management are expected to reduce traffic accidents effectively.

The real-world driving data were used for analyzing blink times and head movement intervals, and the drowsiness data were used for eye closed duration. In the real-world driving study, 52 drivers drove approximately 11.0 km of rural road (about 20 min), 7.9 km of urban road (about 25 min), and 20.8 km of highway (about 20 min). The results suggested that the appropriate number of blinks during the last 60 seconds was 4 times, and the head movement interval was 35 seconds. The results from drowsy driving data will be presented in another paper - part 2.

The Effect of Changing Driving Brightness on Older Drivers

  • The traffic accidents of the aged are increasing because old people generally experience a decline of physical functions and judgment but their dependence on automobiles increases. In order to investigate the older drivers' response to traffic signs and surrounding environment according to changing driving brightness, this study measured the visual cognitive behavior, driving behavior, and subjective evaluation while the driving brightness was changed using a driving simulator. Furthermore, the drivers who recognized traffic signs and those who did not were compared. As a result, it was found that some older drivers had declined ability of cognition, some failed to adapt to rapid brightness change even if sufficient attention was given to traffic sign, and some could not safely control the vehicle when approaching intersections. Therefore, the development of support systems for aged drivers in traffic environment is necessary in the future.

  • This paper presents a simulation tool for developing and evaluating automated driving systems' lane change algorithm in urban congested traffic. The behavior of surrounding vehicles was modeled based on driver driving data measured in urban congested traffic. Surrounding vehicles are divided into aggressive vehicles and non-aggressive vehicles. The degree of aggressiveness is determined according to the lateral position to initiate interaction with the vehicle in the next lane. In addition, the desired velocity and desired time gap of each vehicle are all randomly assigned. The simulation was conducted by reflecting the cognitive limitations and control performance of the autonomous vehicle. It was possible to confirm the change in the lane change performance according to the variation of the lane change decision algorithm.
