In this work we show the results of our most recent Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) of turbulent viscoelastic channel flow using spectral spatial approximations and a stabilizing artificial diffusion in the viscoelastic constitutive model. The Finite-Elasticity Non-Linear Elastic Dumbbell model with the Peterlin approximation (FENE-P) is used to represent the effect of polymer molecules in solution, The corresponding rheological parameters are chosen so that to get closer to the conditions corresponding to maximum drag reduction: A high extensibility parameter (60) and a moderate solvent viscosity ratio (0.8) are used with two different friction Weissenberg numbers (50 and 100). We then first find that the corresponding achieved drag reduction, in the range of friction Reynolds numbers used in this work (180-590), is insensitive to the Reynolds number (in accordance to previous work). The obtained drag reduction is at the level of $49\%\;and\;63\%$, for the friction Weissenberg numbers 50 and 100, respectively. The largest value is substantially higher than any of our previous simulations, performed at more moderate levels of viscoelasticity (i.e. higher viscosity ratio and smaller extensibility parameter values). Therefore, the maximum extensional viscosity exhibited by the modeled system and the friction Weissenberg number can still be considered as the dominant factors determining the levels of drag reduction. These can reach high values, even for of dilute polymer solution (the system modeled by the FENE-P model), provided the flow viscoelasticity is high, corresponding to a high polymer molecular weight (which translates to a high extensibility parameter) and a high friction Weissenberg number. Based on that and the changes observed in the turbulent structure and in the most prevalent statistics, as presented in this work, we can still rationalize for an increasing extensional resistance-based drag reduction mechanism as the most prevalent mechanism for drag reduction, the same one evidenced in our previous work: As the polymer elasticity increases, so does the resistance offered to extensional deformation. That, in turn, changes the structure of the most energy-containing turbulent eddies (they become wider, more well correlated, and weaker in intensity) so that they become less efficient in transferring momentum, thus leading to drag reduction. Such a continuum, rheology-based, mechanism has first been proposed in the early 70s independently by Metzner and Lamley and is to be contrasted against any molecularly based explanations.
The drag reduction agency (DRA) for gas pipeline, a novel method used for reducing friction or drag on a gas flowing to increase the transmission efficiency of gas pipeline, is a more flexible and economical technology than internal flow efficient coatings. In this paper, an effective DRA has been developed in Authors' Institute by analyzing the hydrodynamic friction resistance on internal gas pipeline and then studying the work mechanism and molecular structure of DRA. In the meantime, a group of property test for selecting DRA material has been determined, including viscosity, contact angle, volatility, corrosion, slab extending, and flow behavior in horizontal tube. The inhibition efficiency and drag reduction efficiency of the developed DRA have been investigated finally based on the relevant test methods. Results of corrosion test show that the developed DRA has very good inhibition effect on mild steel by brushing a thin layer of DRA on steel specimens, giving inhibition efficiency of 91.2% and 73.1% in 3%NaCl solution and standard salt fog environment respectively. Results of drag-reducing test also show that the Colebrook formula could be used to calculate friction factors on internal pipes with DRA as the Reynolds number is in the range of $0.75\times10^5\sim2.0\times10^5$. By comparing with normal industrial pipes, the friction resistance coefficient of the steel pipe with DRA on internal wall decreases by 13% and the gas flux increases by 7.3% in testing condition with Reynolds number of $2.0\times10^5$.

In the study, computational fluid dynamics analysis was performed to estimate wind force coefficients for a box-type concrete girder bridge under the influence of wind. The drag, lift and pitching moment coefficients were obtained for the bridge section without noise barrier and compared with those of the bridge section with noise barriers of various heights. The shear stress transport $k-{\omega}$ turbulence model was employed to estimate the wind force coefficients, and the contribution of the friction drag force to the total drag force was investigated. It was found from the study that the drag force coefficients increased as the height of noise barrier increased when a wind blew horizontally, and that the contribution of the friction drag force was highest for the bridge section without noise barrier. It is concluded that the impact of the height of noise barriers should be considered in the design of bridges, and the friction force played an important role in evaluating wind forces on bridges.

An experimental assessment has been made of the drag reducing efficiency of the outer-layer vertical blades, which were first devised by Hutchins. The drag reduction efficiency of the blades was reported to reach as much as 30%. However, the drag reduction efficiency was quantified only in terms of the reduction in the local skin-friction coefficient. In the present study, a series of drag force measurements in towing tank has been performed toward the assessments of the total drag reduction efficiency of the outer-layer vertical blades. A maximum 9.6% of reduction of total drag was achieved. The scale of blade geometry is found to be weakly correlated with outer variable of boundary layer. In addition, detailed flow field measurements have been performed using 2-D time resolved PIV with a view to enabling the identification of drag reduction mechanism.
This paper presents a non-isotropic turbulence modeling of flows over bedforms. The Reynolds stress model is used for the turbulence closure. In the model, Launder, Reece, and Rodi's model and Hanjalic and Launder's model are employed f3r the pressure strain correlation term and the diffusion term, respectively. The mean flow and turbulence structures are simulated and compared with profiles measured in the experiments. The numerical solutions from two-equation turbulence models are also provided for comparisons. The Reynolds stress model yields the separation length of eddy similar to the other numerical results. Using the developed model, the resistance coefficients are also estimated for the flows at different Froude numbers. Karim's (1999) relationship is used to determine the bedform geometry. It is found that the values of the form drag and the skin friction are very similar to those obtained by the other turbulence models. meaning higher values of the form drag and lower values of the skin friction compared with the empirical formulas.

In this paper, a numerical analysis is carried out to study the drag of conical cavitators, supercavity generation devices for the high-speed underwater vehicle. The realizable k-∊ turbulence model and the Schnerr-Sauer cavitation model are applied to calculate steady-state supercavitating flows around cones of various cone angles. The calculated drags of the cones are decomposed of the pressure and the friction parts and their dependency on the geometry and the flow conditions have been analyzed. It is confirmed that the pressure drag coefficients of the cones can be estimated by a simple function of both the cone angle and the cavitation number while the friction drag coefficients approximately by well-known empirical formulas, e.g., Schults-Grunow's for the drag of the flat plate. Finally a practical method for estimating the total drags of supercavitating cones is suggested, which can be useful consequently for the design of conical cavitaors.

The flow pattern of air layers and skin-friction drag reduction by air injection are investigated to find the suitable multiphase flow model using unstructured finite-volume CFD solver for the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. In the present computations, two different multiphase flow modeling approaches, such as the Volume of Fluid (VOF) and the Eulerian Multi-Phase (EMP), are adopted to investigate their performances in resolving the two-phase flow pattern and in estimating the frictional drag reduction. First of all, the formation pattern of air layers generated by air injection through a circular opening on the bottom of a flat plate are investigated. These results are then compared with those of MMkiharju's experimental results. Subsequently, the quantitative ratios of skin-friction drag reduction including the behavior of air layers, within turbulent boundary layers in large scale and at high Reynolds number conditions, are investigated under the same conditions as the model test that has been conducted in the US Navy's William B. Morgan Large Cavitation Channel (LCC). From these results, it is found that both VOF and EMP models have similar capability and accuracy in capturing the topology of ventilated air cavities so called'air pockets and branches'. However, EMP model is more favorable in predicting quantitatively the percentage of frictional drag reduction by air injection.

Under the compressible circumstance of a soil deposit, the soil move downward relative to the pile. The down drag force requires higher point bearing and causes failure of a pile from time to time. In this paper the mechanism of negative skin friction on a pile, design and reduction of the negative friction is reviewed.
Frictional behavior of three automotive friction materials (brake pads) containing different amounts of antimony trisulfide ($Sb_2S_3$) and zirconium silicate ($ZRSiO_4$) were investigated using a front brake system. The friction materials were tested on a brake dynamometer (dyno) with gray cast iron rotors. The dynamometer(dyno) test simulated the dragging of a ehicle maintaining 70 km/h and vehicle stops from 100 km/h using 20 different combinations of initial brake temperature (IBT) and input pressure (IP). The results showed a strong influence of the relative amount of $Sb_2S_3$ and $ZrSiO_4$ in friction materials on friction characteristics. Friction stability was improved with the higher concentration of $Sb_2S_3$ in the friction material. Torque variation during drag cycle was increased with an increase of the $ZrSiO_4$ concentration in the friction material. Average friction coefficient and the wear rate of the friction material increased by using more aggressive friction materials containing more $ZrSiO_4$ and less $Sb_2S_3$. Generation of the disk thickness variation (DTV) increased when friction materials with higher concentration of $ZrSiO_4$ were used Careful examination of DTV change showed that aggressiveness of the friction material played an important role in determining torque variation.

Some physical properties of rapeseed were measured at five moisture levels of 10.03, 14.91, 20.07, 25.06 and 30.12% (w.b.), which include frictional properties (coefficient of static friction, emptying and filling angle of repose) and aerodynamic properties (terminal velocity and drag coefficient). The physical properties of rapeseed were evaluated as a function of seed moisture content. In the moisture content range, the coefficients of static friction, emptying and filling angle of repose increased linearly with increase of moisture content. The maximum values of coefficients of static friction were on the acrylic surface, varied from 0.34 to 0.43; the next is on the galvanized steel, varied from 0.30 to 0.38; and the minimum were on stainless steel surface, varied from 0.27 to 0.35. Emptying and filling angle of repose varied from 26.12 to 29.62 and 23.83 to 27.05 degrees, respectively. Terminal velocity increased linearly from 3.47 to 3.91 m/s with increase of moisture content. Drag coefficient varied from 1.84 to 1.64 as the moisture content increased. The relationship between drag coefficient and moisture content were expressed by non-linear equation.
