We have fabricated bottom gate TFTs with active layers of amorphous/microcrystalline Si double layers (DL). Dynamic electric stresses were applied to DL TFTs and a-Si TFTs to compare their degradation characteristics. The DL TFTs were more stable under dynamic stresses than a-Si TFTs.
This paper deals with the optimum rotor design approach about the multi-layer design of the buried magnets in an Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (IPMSM), on the efficiency improvement by using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). In the multi-layer design of the prototype 15kw IPMSM, the constant amount of buried PM is split from the single-layer into double-layer design for improving the efficiency characteristics. The optimum double-layer rotor structure is built with the help of RSM analysis. The improvement of IPMSM efficiency is verified by the Finite Element Method (FEM) results comparison with the prototype single-layer IPMSM.

Three types of conjugated polymers, poly(PZ-Pi), poly(PZ-BPI) and poly(PZ-NPI) were synthesized by Schiff-base reaction. These new conjugated polymers exhibited improved solubility in common organic solvents due to the presence of alkyl side chains as well as azomethine groups, Double layer LEDs made with the synthesized polymers as emitting layer and $Alq_3$, as electron transporting layer exhibited enhanced EL emission and efficiency compared to those of single layer LEDs. Double layer LEDs exhibited gradual shift in the emission peak th the single layer LED, made of only $Alq_3$ as the emitting layer as the thickness of $Alq_3$ layer increased.

Experimental programs were performed to evaluate the flexural performance of fiber reinforced concrete(FRC) beams using a hybrid double-layer arrangement of steel bars and fiber reinforced polymer(FRP) bars or using FRP bars only. A total of seven beam specimens were produced with type of tensile reinforcing bar(CFRP bar, GFRP bar, steel bar) and the poly vinyl alcohol(PVA) fiber mixing ratio(0.5%, 0%) as variable. An analysis method for predicting the flexural behaviors of FRC beams with hybrid arrangement of heterogeneous reinforcing bars through finite element analysis was proposed and verified. In case of the specimens with the double-layer reinforcing bars, the test results showed that the first cracking load of specimen with a double-layer arrangement of steel bars was greater by 26-34% than specimens with a hybrid double-layer arrangement of steel and FRP bars. In maximum flexural strengths, the specimen that used CFRP bars as bottom tensile reinforcing bar showed the greatest strength among the specimens with the double-layer reinforcing bars. When the maximum moment value obtained through experiments was compared with that obtained through analysis, the ratio was 1.2 on average, the standard deviation was 0.085, and the maximum error rate was 22% or less. Based on these results, the finite element analysis model proposed in this study can effectively simulate the actual behavior of the beams with hybrid double-layer reinforcing bars.
The existence of initial imperfections in manufacturing or assembly of double-layer space structures having hundreds or thousands of members is inevitable. Many of the imperfections, such as the initial curvature of the members and residual stresses in members, are all random in nature. In this paper, the probabilistic effect of initial curvature imperfections in the load bearing capacity of double-layer grid space structures with different types of supports have been investigated. First, for the initial curvature imperfection of each member, a random number is generated from a gamma distribution. Then, by employing the same probabilistic model, the imperfections are randomly distributed amongst the members of the structure. Afterwards, the collapse behavior and the ultimate bearing capacity of the structure are determined by using nonlinear push down analysis and this procedure is frequently repeated. Ultimately, based on the maximum values of bearing capacity acquired from the analysis of different samples, structure's reliability is obtained by using Monte Carlo simulation method. The results show the sensitivity of the collapse behavior of double-layer grid space structures to the random distribution of initial imperfections and supports type.
Highly proten-conductive elastic composites have been successfully prepared from $H_3PO_4$-doped silica gel and styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene block elastic copolymer. In addition solid state electric double-layer capacitors have been fabricated using the composite as an electrolyte and activated carbon powders(ACP) hybridized with the composite as a polrizable electrode. The cyclic voltammogram of the electric double-layer capacitor fabricated demonstrated that electric charge was stored in the elecric double-layer at the interface between the polarizable electrode and the electrolyte. The value of capacitance of the capacitor was 10 F/(gram of total ACP), which was comparable to that of the capacitors using conventional liquid electrolytes.

Graphene, an allotrope of carbon, is a two-dimensional material having a unique electro-mechanical property that shows significant change of the electrical conductance under the applied strain. In addition of the extraordinary mechanical strength [1], graphene becomes a prospective candidate for pressure sensor technology [2]. However, very few investigations have been carried out to demonstrate characteristics of graphene sensor as a device form. In this study, we demonstrate a pressure sensor using graphene double layer as an active channel to generate electrical signal as the response of the applied vertical pressure. For formation of the active channel in the pressure sensor, two single graphene layers which are grown on Cu foil (25 um thickness) by the plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) are sequentially transformed to the poly-di-methyl-siloxane (PDMS) substrate. Dry and wet transfer methods are individually employed for formation of the double layer graphene. This sensor geometry results a switching characteristic which shows ~900% conductivity change in response to the application of pulsed pressure of 5 kPa whose on and off duration is 3 sec. Additionally, the functional reliability of the sensor confirms consistent behavior with a 200-cycle test.

In this study, the electromechanical properties in Sn-Cu double layer stabilized GdBCO coated conductor (CC) tapes with and without external lamination under uniaxial tension were examined at 77 K and self-field. Their irreversible stress and strain limits were determined using a loading-unloading scheme based on different critical current ($I_c$) recovery criteria. The repeated tests were performed and statistical estimation was done to check the reproducibility depending on the criterion adopted in evaluating the electromechanical properties. From the results, it showed that the Sn-Cu double-layer stabilized CC tapes have the higher irreversible stress limit, but lower irreversible strain limit as compared to brass laminated ones. Through the repeated tests, it can be found that a small scattering of irreversible limits existed in both CC tape samples. Finally, similar strain sensitivity of $I_c$ in both CC tapes was obtained.
Recently, an autotrophic single-stage nitrogen removal (ASSNR) process based on the anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX) reaction has been proven as an economical ammonia treatment. It is highly evident that double-layered gel beads are a promising alternative to the natural biofilm for ASSNR because of the high mechanical strength of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/alginate structure and efficient protection of ANAMMOX bacteria from dissolved oxygen (DO) due to the thick outer layer. However, the thick outer layer results in severe mass transport limitation and consequent lowered bacterial activity. Therefore, the effects of the thickness of the outer layer on the overall reaction rate were tested in the biofilm model using AQUASIM for ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) and ANAMMOX bacteria. A thickness of 0.5~1.0 mm is preferred for the maximum total nitrogen (TN) removal. In addition, a DO of 0.5 mg/L resulted in the best total nitrogen removal. A higher DO induces NOB activity and consequent lower TN removal efficiency. The optimal density of AO B and NO B density was 1~10% for a 10% ANAMMOX bacterial in the double-layered PVA/alginate gel beads. The real effects of operating parameters of the thickness of the outer layer, DO and concentrations of biomass balance should be intensively investigated in the controlled experiments in batch and continuous modes.
Stochastic optimization methods have been extensively studied for structural optimization in recent decades. In this study, a novel algorithm named the CA-SA method, is proposed for topology optimization of steel double-layer grid structures. The CA-SA method is a hybridized algorithm combining the Simulated Annealing (SA) algorithm and the Cellular Automata (CA) method. In the CA-SA method, during the initial iterations of the SA algorithm, some of the preliminary designs obtained by SA are placed in the cells of the CA. In each successive iteration, a cell is randomly chosen from the CA. Then, the "local leader" (LL) is determined by selecting the best design from the chosen cell and its neighboring ones. This LL then serves as the leader for modifying the SA algorithm. To evaluate the performance of the proposed CA-SA algorithm, two square-on-square steel double-layer grid structures are considered, with discrete cross-sectional areas. These numerical examples demonstrate the superiority of the CA-SA method over SA, and other meta-heuristic algorithms reported in the literature in the topology optimization of large-scale skeletal structures.
