  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to investigate the fundamental behaviors such as stresses and deflections of the middle slab in a double-deck tunnel for the development of a middle slab design guide. METHODS : The middle slab has been divided into the following three different sections as according to its structural differences: the normal section, expansion joint section, and emergency passageway section. The normal section of middle slab represents the slab supported by brackets installed continuously along the longitudinal direction of tunnel lining. The expansion joint section refers to a discontinuity of middle slab due to the existence of a transverse expansion joint. The emergency passageway section has an empty rectangular space in the middle slab that acts as an exit in an emergency. The finite element analysis models of these three sections of middle slab have been developed to analyze their respective behaviors. RESULTS : The stresses and deflections of middle slab at the three different sections decrease as the slab thickness increases. The emergency passageway section yields the largest stresses and deflections, with the normal section yielding the smallest. CONCLUSIONS : The stress concentrations at the corners of the passageway rectangular space can be reduced by creating hunch areas at the corners. The stresses and deflections in the emergency passageway section can be significantly decreased by attaching beams under the middle slab in the passageway area.

  • One-way Network-RTK(Real Time Kinematics) is considered as a method which can satisfy moving vehicle's recently-required high accuracy and mobility. When we use one-way Network RTK for vehicle navigation, multiple cells-based system is required to provide the service continuously in wide area. The rover which moves through various cells inevitably experiences a correction discontinuity, which is not eliminated by the DD(Double Difference) method and to cause 13cm(horizontal) and 48cm(vertical) position error. We suggest three solutions to reduce this discontinuity, which are identification of master RS with neighbor networks, duplication of communication module to receive corrections from other cells, and ambiguity adjustment between neighbor cells. All of our suggestions reduce the error to 1/4 wavelength in measurement and 3cm in position-domain, and we suggest the ambiguity adjustment is the best when we consider the extendibility of service area and the cost of rover device.

  • In this paper, we propose a disparity-adaptive filtering method to reduce view-aliasing and inter-perspective aliasing on auto-multiscopic 3D display. View aliasing by the subsampled multi-view images could happen if the resolution of an auto-multiscopic monitor is lower than that of the original multi-view images. Furthermore, multi-view images on auto-multiscopic monitor usually cause eye strain and fatigue because of inter-perspective aliasing by discontinuity that exists between viewpoints. The greater disparity value becomes, the stronger these types of aliasing could be. Thus, we design a lowpass filter whose cut-off frequency is determined adaptively to the number of intermediate reconstructed views and their disparity's strength. Though experimental results, we show that the proposed filtering algorithm could reduce the aliasing effect very efficiently by using DSCQS (double stimulus continuous quality scale method).

  • Infinite decimals have an infinite number of digits, chosen arbitrary and independently, to the right side of the decimal point. Since infinite decimals are ambiguous numbers impossible to write them down completely, the infinite decimal representation accompanies unavoidable opaqueness. This article focused the transparent aspect of infinite decimal representation with respect to the completeness axiom of real numbers. Long before the formalization of real number concept in $19^{th}$ century, many mathematicians were able to deal with real numbers relying on this transparency of infinite decimal representations. This analysis will contribute to overcome the double discontinuity caused by the different conceptualizations of real numbers in school and academic mathematics.

  • Cleft lip arises from congenital underdevelopment with various degrees and patterns. Mulliken named a unilateral incomplete cleft lip with no severe cleft as a lesser-form cleft lip and categorized it into three subgroups. Anatomically categorized subgroups are minor-form, microform, and mini-microform cleft by the extent of vermilion-cutaneous dysjuntion. The vermillion cutaneous notch is more than 3 mm from the regular Cupid's bow peak for minor-form, less than 3 mm for microform, and almost no gap with discontinuity on the vermillion cutaneous border for mini-microform. The treatments are rotational advancement flap for minor-form, double unillimb Z-plasty for microform, and vertical lenticular excision for mini-microform, respectively. This article aims to present the literature review about the incomplete lesser form cleft lip classified by Mulliken and to report our experiences.

  • It has been very difficult to solve the semiconductor problems by numerical analysis techique due to the strong nonlinearity of the governing equations. Thus, we proposed a double structured adaptive refinement scheme to the finite element analysis of semiconductor devices, which guarantees a succesive convergency and gives better quality to the solutions.i.e., in the first step, the main factor of divergence in the current continuity equation is eliminated and the next, the solution quality is improved by reducing the discontinuity of current. The result of test application to the GaAs MESFET model shows that the proposed method is much dffective and efficient in the numerical analysis of semiconductor.

  • To enhance the strength of gears for transmission, Generally caburizing heat treatment is applied. But there are some problems in this technology the distortion of gears during heat treatment process, and the discontinuity of manufacturing process. For these reasons, the high frequency induction hardening process is widely used. This method is one of the surface hardening process to improve the wear resistance and fatigue life of the machine components. In this study, to compare the bending fatigue strength of caburized gear with that of induction hardened gear, bending fatigue testing of gears with two different cases was performed by using an electrohydraulic servo-controlled fatigue testing machine and double tooth bending fatigue test fixture. Fatigue life distributions at constant stress levels were established directly from fatigue data. For gear design, the fatigue strength distribution at specified life is more important. This distribution is obtained by statical transformation from fatigue life distribution. Reliability of bending fatigue strength was estimated by P-S-N curves and Weibull distribution.

  • It was used boundary element method(BEM) and analysed axisymmetric problem to solve hydraulic cylinder for large vessel acting uniform internal pressure(25N/m super(2)) within elastic limit. This paper was utilized the carbon steel tubes for machine structural purposed model, inner radius was 150mm and outer radius was 250mm, axial length was semi-infinite and the isoparametric element was used. The important results obtained in this study were summarized as follows. Radial, tangential and shearing stress occured the maximum stresses(48, -20 and 34MPa) at the inner radius and the minimum stresses(32, -4 and 18MPa) at the outer radius of the hydraulic cylinder for large vessel. But negative signs have meaning compressive stress and stress diminution ratio was about 0.15MPa/mm. The use of isoparametric element raised accuracy and the increment of input data lessened the error in internal point but computer run-time was increased. The double node was improved the internal solutions to settle discontinuity at corner and the double exponential formula lessened error of stress value at boundary neighborhood. And then coincidence between the analytical and exact results is found to be fairly good, showing that the proposed analytical by BEM is reliable.

  • In this paper, we propose an SIW(Substrate Integrated Waveguide) multi-section E-plane transformer using air-holes for an SIW system with variable thicknesses. Air-holes are inserted into a SIW E-plane quarter wavelength transformer for matching an E-plane impedance discontinuity. A PSIW(Punched Substrate Integrated Waveguide) consisted of air-holes has an SIW characteristic impedance tunability because of reducing a equivalent shunt capacitance of the SIW. And, a PSIW multi-section E-plane transformer is implemented for improving a matching bandwidth by using the Chebyshev polynomial. The measurement results of PSIW double-section E-plane transformer show that the insertion loss($S_{21}$) is $1.57{\pm}0.11$ dB and input return loss($S_{11}$) is more than 15 dB from 11.45 GHz to 13.6 GHz.

  • This study examines the approach of introduction of the real numbers through the infinite decimal, which is suggested by Lee Ji-Hyun(2014; 2015) in the aspect of the overcoming the double discontinuity, and analyses Li(2011), which is the mathematical background of the foregoing Lee's. Also, this study compares these construction methods given by Lee and Li with the traditional method using the nested intervals. As a result of analysis, this study shows that Lee Ji-Hyun(2014; 2015) and Li(2011) face the risk of the circulation logic in making the infinite decimal corresponding each point on the geometrical line, and need the steps not using the 'limit to a real number' in order to compensate the mathematical and educational defect. Accordingly, this study raises the opinion that the traditional method of defining the infinite decimal as a sequence by using the geometrical nested intervals axiom would be a appropriate supplementation.
