  • This paper presents a deformable strut-and-tie model of determining the shear strengths and ultimate deformations of the shear-dominant reinforced concrete members. The proposed model originates from the strut-and-tie model concept and satisfies equilibrium, compatibility, constitutive laws, and the geometric conditions of shear deformation. This study attempts to apply deformation patterns to strut-and-tie models. The yielding of flexural reinforcements determines yielding states and the ultimate states of reinforced concrete coupling beam are defined as the ultimate compressive strain of struts and the degradation of compressive strength due to principal tensile strain of struts. The validity and accuracy of the proposed model is then tested against available experimental data. The parameters reviewed include the ratios of truss action and arch action, the reinforcement ratios, and the shear span-depth ratio. It is expected that this model can be applied to displacement-based design methods.

  • Some surface blasting vibration was measured to determine site constants and vibration frequency was analyzed. The results are summarized as follows; 1) Design method to predict particle velocities was introduced using the logarithmic normal distribution characteristics of peak particle velocities. 2) Scaled distance diagram to determine limiting charge was presented. 3) Line fitness between particle velocity and scaled distance didn't depend on dominant component of vibration. Prevail fitness was in the order of transverese, peak, vertical and radial component. 4) Dominant component of particle velocity didn't related to drilling direction. Frequency was lowered as distance enlarged. Duration time of vibration was shortened as charge decreased.

  • A series of fatigue tests have been performed on the non-load carrying fillet welded joints in order to quantitatively assess the fatigue characteristics due to the grindings and TIG(Tungsten Inert Gas) welding treatments. From the results of fatigue tests, it has been shown that the fatigue strengths at $2{\times}106$ load cycles were improved in the case of the grinding sand TIG welding treatments, and we could know that it is satisfying fatigue strength prescribed in fatigue design standard in general. Besides, from the results of fracture mechanics approaches, the geometric shape correction factors were the most dominant factors in the initial fatigue crack growth, but as the fatigue crack develops, the finite plate correction factor were became the most dominant factor, and the fatigue life on non-load carrying fillet welded joints could be relatively exactly estimated by using the relations between fatigue crack growth rate and stress intensity factor obtained from finite element analysis and existing proposed formulae.

  • The physical parameters of controlled systems are uncertain and are accompanied with nonlinearity. The transfer function of the controlled system should, therefore, be expressed by interval polynomials. This paper describes the realization of robust performance for that type of control system (interval system) via model reference feedback. First, we will analyze an invariance problem of dynamic characteristics such that the dominant roots do not break away from a specified circular area, and will present a discrimination algorithm (i.e., a division algorithm) for the extreme points of the uncertain coefficients. Then, we will present a design method of control systems which have a robust performance such that the location of the dominant roots dose not vary excessively.

  • This paper presents the integrated speech enhancement system for hands-free mobile communication. The proposed integrated system incorporates both acoustic echo cancellation and engine noise reduction device to provide signal enhancement of desired speech signal from the echoed plus noisy environments. To implement the system, a delayless subband adaptive structure is used for acoustic echo cancellation operation. The NLMS based adaptive noise canceller then applied to the residual echo removed noisy signal to achieve the selective engine noise attenuation in dominant frequency component. Two sets of computer simulations are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the system; one for the fixed acoustical environment condition, the other for the robustness of the system in which, more realistic situation, the acoustic transmission environment change. Simulation results confirm the system performance of 20-25dB ERLE in acoustic echo cancellation and 9-19 dB engine noise attenuation in dominant frequency component for both cases.

  • Recently, design has emerged as a key factor of successful product development. This study reviewed the elements of form with a view point of addressing and defining the elements of aesthetics and how they influence consumer aesthetic response. Though past researches related to form aesthetics reported that form aesthetics exist as a single element with other sub-elements, this research made further investigations into form aesthetics and reported that form aesthetics in product design can be broadly divided into form aesthetics and content aesthetics. Empirical studies on each category was undertaken and from the results obtained, it was concluded that typicality is a dominant element in content aesthetics while balance is a dominant element in form aesthetics. Also, the study investigated the effect of conditional variables such as price and people on each category and it was observed that both content and form aesthetics elements are affected by conditional variables such as price, people. Furthermore, the study reports that both content and form aesthetics elements are mutually correlated and both categories affect user's aesthetics response. It is intended that the results obtained from this work will contribute to theoretical knowledge of aesthetic elements and can be put to use by product design and manufacturing companies.

  • Spiral tubes are used in a wide range of applications and it is significant to understand the vibration introduced by two-phase flow in spiral tubes. In this paper, the numerical method is used to study the vibration induced by the gas-liquid two-phase flow in a spiral tube with different flow regimes. The pressure fluctuation characteristics at the pipe wall and the solid vibration response characteristics are obtained. The results show that the motion of small bubbles in bubbly flow leads to small pressure fluctuations with low-frequency broadband (0-50 Hz). The motion of the gas plug in the plug flow causes small amplitude periodic pressure fluctuation with a shortened low-frequency broadband (0-15 Hz) compared to the bubbly flow. The motion of the gas slug in the slug flow causes large periodic fluctuations in pressure with a significant dominant frequency (6-7 Hz). The wavy flow is very stable and has a distinct main frequency (1-2 Hz). The vibration regime in the bubbly flow and wave flow are close to the first-order mode, and the vertical vibrating component is dominant. The plug flow and slug flow excite higher-order vibration modes, and the lateral vibration component plays more important part in the vibration response.

  • The design hotel where new life styles of users were created and the exchange of one's identity and the culture was executed was employed the interaction design which considered the attendance and experience of users as the important motives. This study is to discuss on the relationship between the design hotel and interaction design, and to compare and analyze the differences in the expression methods of them. It was concluded that the design hotel had a close relation with the properties of information supply, amusements, narrative, personalization, and social exchange in the interaction design, and it mainly used the digital media of non-material, the juxtaposition of strangeness, the change of structure, substitution of values, appropriation of hybrid as a means of its expression. In addition, it was revealed that the properties above did not simply apply to an open space but were connected as a dominant-subordinate relationship into one subject. It is expected that the field of interaction design in the design hotel will be expanded due to the spread of digital technology and its role and importance will be increased. Therefore, it is thought that the study to provide the development of a variety of contents of design hotel should be kept through the study of organic relation between different subjects, avoiding the indiscriminate use of the contents.

  • Since public rental housings (social housings) in Korea are extremely standardized and uniformed, a variety of needs of residents for their housing are hardly satisfied. Public rental housing conditions, its low quality and size limitations regardless of residents type and needs resulted into negative images of social housing and social discriminations. Therefore there is a growing demand for alternative housing options in terms of diversification of social housing design with consideration for changing households and housing requirements. The purpose of this study to investigate some housing design guidelines, to analyze layout of building complex, community designs, household units and characteristics, overall design characteristics (sustainable design features, facade design, window and balcony composition, color and materials) and to provide some design suggestions for social housing. Design guidelines are classified into site planning and building layouts, residential building and household units, and performance of housing. Community facilities and their design features provide uniqueness of the public residence. Overall housing size of foreign cases is bigger than the domestic cases. Narrow shape of household units are more dominant in Korean public rental housing. More various shape and forms are found in facade and window design in foreign cases. Some design suggestion are provided for more diverse housing units and design for public rental housing in Korea.
