  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of dominant brand, the quality variation among brands in the extension product category and the self-construals on consumer's attitude about extension products. The experimental design consist of three-way complex factors and 226 subjects participated for the study. The results showed that when there was fashion brand extension, whether or not there was an existing dominant brand in the extension product category, the quality variation among brands in the extension product category and the types of self-construals had a significant interaction effect on their favorableness and intention to purchase the extension products. Regardless of an existing dominant brand however, the group who had an interdependent self-construal showed higher favorableness and intention to purchase the extension products when the quality variation among brands in the extension product category was lower than when it was high, whereas the group who had an independent self-construal showed no significant difference of the favorableness and intention to purchase the extension products.

The study was to determine socks brand awareness in ralation to segmented distribution regions and such demographic variables as sex and age. The authors also analyzed preferred design. A total of 650 questionnaires were distributed and 611 reliable ones were used for statistical analysis. A SAS statistical package including frequency tables and chi square test was used. The results are as follows: Brand awareness involves "brand recall" based on asking a person to name the brand he or she recalls first, and also "brand recognition" based on asking subjects to identify brand names from 30 given brands. 'SOCKSTOP' was found to be a dominant brand as a result of the brand recall test, and 'BYC' was found to be a dominant brand as a result of the brand recognition test. Brand recognition was significantly different in the segmented distribution regions, three age groups and different sex groups. People considered design first in purchasing sports/casual socks, while they considered color first in purchasing dress socks. The most favored type of sock style was the common crew sock type.

  • The case study of OB shows dramatic market dynamics between leader brand vs. follower brand similar to Kirin vs. Asahi in Japan for two decades. Almost 20yrs ago, the brand status of OB was dramatically fallen because of the environmental pollution of subsidiary company and harsh competition of rivalry brand. But OB made a ground change in its brand strategy. OB departed from the pride in its past to bet on the new. OB decided to vitalize Cass brand through brand portfolio strategy. They deployed 3 phase articulated marketing plans; Phase I, Acquisition of Cass brand through M&A and strategic segmentation/targeting (1993-2005), Phase 2 - Mega Brand Strategy through Line Extension(2006-2009), Phase 3 - Experiential Marketing focused on Young Culture (2010- present). Finally, OB restored not only brand reputation of Cass and other brands but dominant market position in beer market. Now Cass has been growing rapidly in the last 20 years achieving 50% M/S. The three phases shows the typical successful process of brand management and revitalization adopting brand concept management and S-T-P strategy of manufacturing company.

  • This study intended to construct the brand switching matrix in the Korean casual wear market and to analyze it in various aspects. 1,014 sample data were collected in Seoul area, a center of fashion retailing. Since the respondents cited over 200 brand names as their last 2 purchased casual wear brands, 15 most frequently-purchased brands were selected for constructing the brand switching matrix. As a result of the examination, it was founded that the brand loyalty was dominant rather than brand switching in the casual wear market. Polo was identified as the leading brand in the market. Its brand equity, which was comprised of brand recognition, brand preference (loyalty), perceived quality, and brand association, was evaluated very high. Especially, the strength of Polo was the consumer's strong preference and the brand image of simplicity, naturalness, and neatness. After combining 15 brands into 6 groups based on the style and price, additional interpretation was performed on this 'trend switching matrix.' A transition of fashion trend in casual wear was observed. Applying the brand switching matrix on fashion products gave us much insight to the market.

  • This research deals with the issues concerning how consumers change their purchase behavior if one of brands in the market prolongs its coupon duration while there are more than two brands. If they extend coupon duration of a brand, consumers increase Purchase of the brand with coupons. But they increase or reduce purchase of competing brands with coupons depending on the condition of the market. increase of purchase of the brand with prolonged coupons stems from reducing purchase of the consumer's most favorite brands with regular price and their less preferred brands with coupons. On the other hand, consumers who prefer the brand at in-between level tend to reduce purchase of competing brands with coupons under certain conditions. Therefore firms which do not have dominant market positions have strong incentive for strategic alliance in terms of coupon duration.
