This paper addresses a fundamental study that is necessary to complement and improve the current domestic design specifications for the strong motion duration criterion and the envelope function of artificial accelerograms that can be applied to the earthquake-proof design of nuclear structures. The criteria for the design response spectra and strong motion duration suggested by USNRC and ASCE Standard 4-98 are commonly being used in the profession, and they are first compared with each other and reviewed. By applying 209 real strong earthquake records that are greater than 5 in magnitude at rock sites to the strong motion duration criterion in ASCE 4-98, an empirical regression model that predicts the strong motion duration as a function of the earthquake magnitude was then developed. Using synthetically generated earthquake time histories for the 10 cases whose strong motion durations varied from 6 to 20 seconds, extensive seismic analyses were finally conducted to identify the effects of the strong motion durations on the seismic responses of the nuclear power plant containment structures.

In this paper, a deep learning-based detection and classification using multi-band frequency signals is presented for detecting earthquakes prevalent in Korea. Based on an analysis of the previous earthquakes in Korea, it is observed that multi-band signals are appropriate for classifying earthquake signals. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a deep CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) using multi-band signals as training data. The proposed algorithm extracts the multi-band signals (Low/Medium/High frequency) by applying band pass filters to mel-spectrum of earthquake signals. Then, we construct three CNN architecture pipelines for extracting features and classifying the earthquake signals by a late fusion of the three CNNs. We validate effectiveness of the proposed method by performing various experiments for classifying the domestic earthquake signals detected in 2018.

The seismic design of the domestic concrete dams has done by seismic coefficient method considering inertia force, but this method has defect not reflect dynamic properties, as a conservative design method. Therefore, it is necessary for seismic design of dam to consider dynamic properties. Also, concrete dam evaluation of seismic performance has done by seismic coefficient method - in fact, it may done by dynamic analysis - that has many problems when applied to the domestic criteria. This study make a comparative analysis for result from seismic design and evaluation of seismic performance by seismic coefficient method, modified seismic coefficient method, and dynamic analysis method.

The risk-based assessment, also called time-based assessment of structure is usually performed to provide seismic risk evaluation of a target structure for its entire life-cycle, e.g. 50 years. The prediction of collapse probability is the estimator in the risk-based assessment. While the risk-based assessment is the key in the performance-based earthquake engineering, its application is very limited because this evaluation method is very expensive in terms of simulation and computational efforts. So the evaluation database for many archetype structures usually serve as representative of the specific system. However, there is no such an assessment performed for building stocks in Korea. Consequently, the performance objective of current building code, KBC is not clear at least in a quantitative way. This shortcoming gives an unresolved issue to insurance industry, socio-economic impact, seismic safety policy in national and local governments. In this study, we evaluate the comprehensive seismic performance of an low-rise residential buildings with discontinuous structural walls, so called piloti-type structure which is commonly found in low-rise domestic building stocks. The collapse probability is obtained using the risk integral of a conditioned collapse capacity function and regression of current hazard curve. Based on this approach it is expected to provide a robust tool to seismic safety policy as well as seismic risk analysis such as Probable Maximum Loss (PML) commonly used in the insurance industry.
We investigated pre- and post- seismic total electron content (TEC) anomalies in ionosphere caused by recent large-scale earthquakes around the globe and additionally examined whether the similar phenomena are detected in connection with the earthquakes around the Korean Penisula. TEC anomalies associated with the large-scale earthquakes showed the similar results to previous studies. In addition, we newly found the similar TEC changes from the recent 2016 Ecuador earthquake (M7.8). However, the post-seismic TEC changes would be falsely interpreted as the pre-seismic TEC changes dependent on the post-processing of TEC observation. We also investigated the possibility of TEC responses from the recent domestic earthquakes including 2016 Gyeongju earthquake but could not find any anomalous TEC changes. This is probably because the domestic earthquakes release significantly smaller acoustic wave energy than that of large-scale earthquakes occurring in plate boundaries.
Purpose: This study seeks to draw out implications that must be considered in the process of establishing measures to evacuate residents in preparation for domestic nuclear disasters by conducting an investigation about the disaster situation at the time of the Fukushima nuclear power plant explosion, emergency warning situation for residents protection, evacuation situation and In addition to investigating problems and measures raised in the resident protection system at that time. Method: A literature survey was conducted focusing on reports published by Japan's national, parliament, local governments and related agencies from right after the Great East Japan Earthquake to the present. Result: Found out what needs to be considered in the process of establishing domestic radiation disaster measures through the results of the survey on the problems and countermeasures derived from the process of evacuation of residents at the time of the Fukushima nuclear power plant explosion. Conclusion: The reviews were classified into four categories and detailed reviews were presented.

In Korea, most nuclear power plants were designed based on the design response spectrum of Regulatory Guide 1.60 of the NRC. However, in the case of earthquakes occurring in the country, the characteristics of seismic motions in Korea and the design response spectrum differed. The seismic motion in Korea had a higher spectral acceleration in the high-frequency range compared to the design response spectrum. The seismic capacity may be reduced when evaluating the seismic performance of the equipment with high-frequency earthquakes compared with what is evaluated by the design response spectrum for the equipment with a high natural frequency. Therefore, EPRI proposed the inelastic energy absorption factor for the equipment anchorage. In this study, the seismic performance of welding anchorage was evaluated by considering domestic seismic characteristics and EPRI's inelastic energy absorption factor. In order to reflect the characteristics of domestic earthquakes, the uniform hazard response spectrum (UHRS) of Uljin was used. Moreover, the seismic performance of the equipment was evaluated with a design response spectrum of R.G.1.60 and a uniform hazard response spectrum (UHRS) as seismic inputs. As a result, it was confirmed that the seismic performance of the weld anchorage could be increased when the inelastic energy absorption factor is used. Also, a comparative analysis was performed on the seismic capacity of the anchorage of equipment by the welding and the extended bolt.

In an effort to further exploit the peak ground-motion acceleration (PGA) information per second available in real time by the enacted law, bracketed summations of the PGA per second ($BSPGA_k$) for 30 seconds based on the records with a rate of 100 samples were compared with the cumulative absolute velocity (CAV) and earthquake intensities based on a worldwide database of records from small-to-large earthquakes. The CAV, currently in use as an earthquake damage indicator for nuclear power plants due to its strong correlation with the earthquake intensity, has the disadvantage of requiring a massive amount of digital data with a rate of more than 100 samples per second. The comparative study shows that the $BSPGA_k$ is well correlated with the CAV over the wide range of strong ground-motion levels, which suggests that the $BSPGA_k$ is one of the new promising ground-motion parameters especially useful for rapid earthquake alert notifications through an earthquake monitoring network. Based on the domestic database of records from small-to-moderate earthquakes with felt reports, it is also observed that the $BSPGA_k$ is comparable to the CAV and better than the PGA in predicting the intensity by using the correlation relation.

The domestic earthquake-resistant regulation was legislated firstly in 1988. However, The magnitude and frequency of earthquakes has been risen in South Korea. Therefore, the mandatory target of earthquake-resistant has been expanded. The earthquake-resistant rates of public facilities have been increased by 58.3%. On the other hand, education facilities are low with 24.8%. For the reason, more than 50% of the educational facilities are expected to be damaged by the earthquake. Especially, the 45% of educational facilities were damaged at Po-Hang earthquake. As a result, the importance of the seismic retrofit for applying existing education facilities was ended up attracting people's interesting. In this respect, in order to develop a effective seismic retrofit method, many researchers have been conducted researches and it is expected to be actively carried out in the future. However, it is insufficient to consider that how far technology has been developed. Therefore, the purpose of this study is a comparative analysis of precedent guidelines in regard to seismic retrofit applying existing education facilities between domestic and other countries. Finally, the directions of future research are suggested.

Lifeline Damages induced by earthquake loading brings not only a structure damage but the communication problems by the interruption of various energy utilities such as electric power, gas, and water resources. Earthquake loss estimation systems in USA and Japan, called as HAZUS (Hazard in US) and HERAS (Hazards Estimation and Restoration Aid System), respectively, have been established for the purpose of efficient responding to the earthquake hazard. Sufficient damage records are required to establish these systems. However, there are insufficient data set of damage records obtained from previous earthquakes in Korea. In this study, according to the construction specifications of the pipelines in both Korea and USA, the behavior of both ductile and brittle pipelines embedded in dense sand overlying various soils, such as clay, sand, and gravel were examined with respect to the pipeline characteristics under various earthquake loadings. The applicability of pipeline damage prediction used in HAZUS program to Korea has been investigated.
