The Impact of Underdog Positioning on Consumer Preference in Korea: Focusing on Local Service Providers

  • Purpose - Small independent brands from local companies often use underdog positioning to compete with established global brands. However, whether the effectiveness of underdog positioning of local businesses in the service sector remains insufficient. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the underdog effect on the preference of Korean consumers for individual service providers positioned as underdogs. Design/methodology - The author examines the research question of this study using a one-way ANOVA in three different positioning (underdog vs. top dog vs. control) between-subjects design, with a group of Korean participants. Findings - The experimental study shows that support for independent local (vs. global) service providers positioned as underdogs is straightforward. Using the lens of consumer identification with underdog biographies, this study found that consumers prefer small local service providers with passion and determination regardless of their disadvantages. Originality/value - To the best of the author's knowledge, this is the first study to examine the effectiveness of underdog positioning in the context of individual service providers. As it competes with global service companies for domestic consumer preference in Korea, the findings have great implications for ensuring the sustainability of small local service providers.

  • 냉각이 개 정자의 기능(생존력, 활력, 첨체고유성)과 형태(기형율)에 미치는 영향을 알아보기 위해 23마리 개의 정소상체에서 정자를 회수하여 다음과 같은 실험에 사용하였다. 정자를 3% BSA가 첨가된 0.3M glucose(G-BSA)에 희석한 후 실험 1에서 서로 다른 온도, 0, 10, $37^{\circ}C$에 30분동안 냉각하여 $37^{\circ}C$에서 가온한 후 정자의 활력, 생존력, 첨체고유성을 검사하였다. 실험 2에서 $0^{\circ}C$와 4$^{\circ}C$에서 정자를 서로 다른 시간 (5, 10, 15, 30분)동안 노출시켜 $37^{\circ}C$에서 가온한 후 정자의 활력 및 생존력을 검사하였다. 또한 sugars가 개정자의 기능과 형태에 미치는 영향을 알아보기 위해 여러 종류의 sugars (0.3M)를 준비하고 $0^{\circ}C$에서 정자를 sugardyddor에 노출시켜 $37^{\circ}C$에서 가온한 후 정자의 활력, 생존력 및 기형정도를 관찰하였다. 본 실험결과 개 정조상체유래의 정자는 냉각온도가 감소할수록 정자의 기능이 급격하게 감소하여 냉각에 민감하게 나타났다.(P<0.05), 특히 정자의 활력이 다른 정자의 기능, 생존력과 첨체고유성에 비해 냉각에 민감하게 나타났다. 정자를 $0^{\circ}C$$4^{\circ}C$에서 서로 다른 시간(5, 10, 15, 30분) 동안 냉각하였을 때 30분 동안 냉각된 정자가 그 외의 시간 동안 냉각된 정자에 비해 생존력이 저하되었다. (P<0.05). 이상의 결과 개 정소상체유래의 정자는 냉각에 비교적 민감하였으며 정자의 냉각에 대한 민감성을 완화시키는 첨가제로 단당류뿐만 아니라 다당류에 대한 연구가 이루어져야 할 것으로 생각된다.선택에 대한 인식이 낮음을 알 수 있었다. 부페식당에서 가장 좋아하는 음식의 국적은 54.4%가 한국음식으로 나타났다. 부페식사에서 '약간' 또는 ‘대단히 과식했다'고 응답한 경우가 64.0%로 많은 대상자들이 과식하는 것으로 나타났는데 이로 인한 건강 및 영양문제에 대한 교육이 필요하고 운영면에서는 이러한 일종의 음식의 낭비를 줄일 수 있는 방안에 대한 연구가 필요하다고 사료되었다. 5) 향후 부페식당의 발전방향에 대한 의견 부페식당의 발전방향에 대해 '가지수를 줄여서라도 가격을 짜게 하자'는 의견이 82.9%로 대부분 조사 대상자들이 현재 부페가격에 대해 부정적인 반응을 보였다. '한국음식을 더 많이 해서 전통음식과 친밀한 장소로 발전시키자', '계절식품을 이용하고 비슷한 종류의 음식은 빼서 가격을 낮추자', '연령에 따라서, 또, 성인에서는 성별에 따라 가격 차이를 두자'는 의견 등이 있었다.이용한 배반포의 체외생산에 있어서 배양액내 항산화제의 첨가는 체외성숙단계에서만 효과적이었다. 이것은 아마도 항산화제가 체외성숙 시 난포란 내에서 일어나는 여러 가지 생화학 반응의 처리시간과 관련하여 활성화시킴으로써 난포란의 생존력을 높인 것이라고 사료되기 때문에 앞으로는 돼지 난포란의 효율적인 체외성숙에 대해서 배양액내 첨가물질은 물론 나아가서 방법론적인 측면에서 더욱 연구되어져야 할 것이다.ed from Nusselt's film condensation theory on tilted plate.   • Recently, demographic studies of veterinary medical database have been conducted to understand patterns of disease occurrence. Understanding incidence of breed-related disease would provide appropriate guidance for future health care strategies and offer useful information for early diagnosis of disease. However, in veterinary medicine, theses research has not yet been investigated in the Republic of Korea. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of common medical disorders among dog breeds examined at primary-care veterinary clinics in Jeollabuk-Do, Republic of Korea. The data were analyzed based on World Health Organization's International Classification of Disease. A total 13,176 medical records of canine patients were analyzed from six primary veterinary clinics in Jeollabuk-Do from January to December 2016. Results showed that the most common health problems were 'disease of skin' (17.7%); followed by 'diseases of digestive system' (12.26%), 'preventive medicine' (10.08%), and 'diseases of ear and mastoid process' (10.4%). In seven out of ten breeds, the most common medical disorder was skin disease. For poodle such as Pomeranian and Chihuahua, digestive system disease was most prevalent. On the other hand, respiratory system disease was found to be higher in Pomeranian than other breeds; while ear and mastoid process disease was most common for Maltese and Poodle. This study can help owners, breeders, and veterinarians prevent and manage various diseases of popular breeds in Jeollabuk-Do in the future.

Phylogenetic Characteristics of Echinococcus granulosus Sensu Lato in Uzbekistan

  • Echinococcosis occurs mainly in areas with heavy livestock farming, such as Central Asia, America, and Australia. Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.) infection causes echinococcosis in intermediate hosts, such as sheep, cattle, goats, camels, and horses. Numerous cases of echinococcosis occur in Uzbekistan as stock farming is a primary industry. Epidemiological and genetic studies of E. granulosus s.l. are very important for mitigating its impact on public health and the economy; however, there are no such studies on E. granulosus s.l. in Uzbekistan. In the present study, to determine which genotypes exist and are transmitted, we isolated Echinococcus sp. from definitive hosts (one isolate each from jackal and dog) and intermediate hosts (52 isolates from humans and 6 isolates from sheep) in Uzbekistan and analyzed the isolates by sequencing 2 mitochondrial DNA components (cox1 and nad1). The results showed that all of isolates except one belonged to the E. granulosus sensu stricto (s.s.) G1 and G3 genotypes. Phylogenetic analysis based on cox1 sequences showed that 42 isolates from humans, 6 isolates from sheep, and one isolate from jackal were the G1 genotype, whereas the remaining 8 isolates from human and the one isolate from dog were the G3 genotype. These results suggest that the G1 and G3 genotypes of E. granulosus s.s. are predominant in Uzbekistan, and both wild animals and domestic animals are important for maintaining their life cycle. Only one isolate from human sample was confirmed to be E. eqiinus (G4 genotype), which is known to be for the first time.

당근, 느타리버섯 및 솔잎 추출물이 첨가된 화장품의 할랄인증을 위한 PCR 분석 (PCR Analysis for Halal Authentication of Cosmetics Containing Carrot, Oyster Mushroom, and Pine Needle Extracts)

  • 최근 국내의 식품 및 화장품 분야에서 해외 할랄시장 진출을 위해 할랄 인증에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있다. 할랄 인증을 받으려면 해당 제품에 돼지, 개, 사람, GMO 등과 같은 haram 성분들이 포함되어서는 안 된다. 본 연구에서는 papain과 bromelain을 처리한 식물추출물(당근, 느타리 버섯, 솔잎)이 첨가된 화장품(cream과 mask pack)이 할랄 인증에 적합한지를 확인하기 위해 이들 추출물과 최종제품에서 haram 성분의 존재 여부를 PCR을 이용하여 분석하였다. 사람, 돼지, 개 및 GMO 대두의 template DNA를 특이적으로 검출하는 PCR 방법의 검출한계는 각각 $1.29{\times}10^3$, $1.14{\times}10^3$, $1.24{\times}10^2$$2.02{\times}10^3copies/tube$ 이었다. PCR은 식물 추출물이나 화장품 성분에 의해 저해 받지 않았다. 식물추출물과 이들이 첨가된 cream과 mask pack에 대해 PCR을 수행한 결과 모두 음성이었다. 본 PCR 방법은 식품이나 화장품의 제조과정 중 원재료나 최종제품에서 haram 성분의 존재를 신속하게 확인하는 데 활용이 가능할 것으로 보인다.

  • Pseudorabies is caused by Pseudorabies virus (PRV: Aujeszky's disease virus) of Herpesviridae that is characterized by 100 to 150nm in size with a linear double-stranded DNA molecule with of approximately $90{\times}10^6Da$. This disease affects most of domestic animals such as swine, cattle, dog, sheep, cat, chicken, etc. causing high mortality and economic losses. In swine, young piglets show high mortality and pregnant sows, reproductive failures. However the adult swine reveals no clinical signs in general. But they become a carrier state and play an important role for propagation of the disease. In this study, the nucleotide sequence of major casid protein gene of PRV, Yangsan strain isolated from the diseased swine in Korea was analyzed, and the recombinant MCP was produced by expression of the MCP gene in Sf-9 cell using baculovirus transfer vector system. As result, in BamHI digestion, MCP gene locus of PRV YS strain showed different from that of Indiana S strain. The patterns of enzyme mapping were also found to be unidentical each other. The sequence of the MCP gene partially analyzed showed 98.09% identity to Indiana S strain. The expression of MCP in Sf-9 cell cotransfected by pVLMCP-44 baculovirus expression vector was characterized by Southern blot hybridization, immunofluoresent and immunocytochemical tests, SDS-PAGE and Western blotting. The rMCP with M.W. 142kDa was most effectively expressed in Sf-9 cells at the 3-4th days post inoculation of the recombinant baculovirus by 2 moi.

Osteomyelitis following Domestic Animal Bites to the Hand: Two Case Reports and Practical Guidelines

  • Recently, the number of cases of animal bite wounds has increased significantly in concordance with an increase in the pet population around the world. The authors report two rare cases of osteomyelitis of the phalanx following cat and dog bites. On initial physical examination, signs of a severe infection were observed. Radiographs of both patients showed the presence of osteomyelitis, and in one of the patients, the diagnosis was confirmed with a bone biopsy. After use of empirical antibiotics, intravenous antibiotic therapy that matched the identified bacterium's sensitivity was initiated, and at the same time, secure dressing including debridement was performed to induce secondary healing. In addition, the patients were closely monitored with serial X-rays, and culture and blood test follow-up. One patient fully recovered without sequelae, but the other patient suffered a loss of distal interphalangeal joint motion. When dealing with bite wounds located on the hand, it is important to visit the hospital as soon as possible and receive the appropriate treatment early. Moreover, to prevent severe complications such as osteomyelitis, it is important to administer antibiotic therapy to which the cultured bacteria are sensitive, along with proper wound management and prophylactic antibiotic treatment.

가축 및 실험동물의 비충류 감염에 대한 프라지관열($Cesocide^{\circledR}$ 주) 주사제의 치료효과 (Efficacy of Praziquantel ($Cesocide^{\circledR}$ injection) in Treatment of Cestode In(ections in Do%erotic and Laboratory Animals)

  • 프라지관텔 주사제의 조충류 피료 효과를 평가하였다. 개, 고양이, 산양, 사슴, 닭, 쥐 및 마우스 등 총 93마리 동물의 장관내에 기성하는 조충류 dipylidium caninum, Taenia pisiformis, Spirometra sp., Taenia taeniaeformis, Moniekia expanse, Moniexia sp., Raillietina sP. 및 인ymenolepis nana에 체중 kg당 프라지콴텔 12 mg, 9 mg, 6 mg, 3 mg, 1.5 mg을 대퇴부에 근육주사한 후 치료효과를 판정하였다. H. nana에 감염된 마우스는 6mg/kg 투여 후 3시 간부터 6시 간 사이에 충체를 배출하였다. 다른 조충류도 약제투여 48시 간 이내에 모두 체외로 배출되었다. H. nana 및 M. expansa를 제외한 모든 충체는 체외 배출시 심하게 손상되어 있었으며, D.cnninum의 충란낭은 붕괴되어 충란이 분리되었다. 조충의 종류와 감염강도 등에 따른 숙주 체중 kg당 투여 용량의 차이는 관찰되지 않았으며 Spirometra sp.에 감염되었던 한 마리의 개를 제외하고는 프락지관텔 6 mg/kg 1회 용량으로 완치되어 97.9% (46/47)의 치유율을 보임으로써 우수한 치료 효과를 나타내었다.

고양이 림프구성 위염에서 싸이클로스포린을 이용한 치료 증례 (Treatment of Lymphocytic Gastritis with Cyclosporine in a Cat)

  • 7세 중성화된 암컷 고양이가 3개월 동안 지속된 간헐적인 구토 증상으로 진료 의뢰되었다. 혈액 검사와 진단영상학적 검사에서 비정상적인 소견은 관찰되지 않았다. 내시경 검사에서 위 동체 점막에 국소적인 미란이 관찰되었고, 해당 병변들에 대한 조직병리학적 검사를 통해 림프구성 위염으로 진단하였다. 프레드니솔론 투약 7일 후에 구토 및 식욕 부진 증상은 소실되었지만, 장기간 투약에 의한 부작용 발생 때문에 프레드니솔론 대신에 싸이클로스포린을 처방하였다. 환자의 상태는 개선되었고, 구토와 식욕부진은 더 이상 관찰되지 않았다. 본보는 만성 구토를 보이는 고양이 림프구성 위염에 있어 싸이클로스포린은 치료 약물로 적용 가능함을 시사한다.

염소가스 누출사고에 대한 역학적 조사연구 (An Epidemiological Study on the Accident resulting from Leakage of Chloride)

  • During the Period from 22th to November 26th, 1971, An Epidemiological Survey was performed on the Accident which was occurred by Leakage of Chloride Gases in A Chemical Industry, one of Wul San Industrial Areas. The obtained results were as follows; 1. The largest damage was observed at Yeo Cheon Dong, 5.38 Km2 in Area and 8,192 in the Residents. 2. By the age distribution of Yeo Cheon Dong, The largest damaged area resulting from chloride accident, the age group of between 10 and 39 was highly occupied with 55.2% Of all Yeo Cheon residents. 3. The number of patient was 436 totally, 198 in male and 238 in female. 4. By the age group distribution of the patient, in case of male, the largest group was under 20 age (96) and female, between 20 and 40 age group. 5. By the educational level of the patient, No-Education group was 116 (26.6%), and primary school, middle school and high school were respectively 168 (38.5%), 68 (15.6%) and 12 (2.8%). 6. By the occupational distribution of the patient, No-Occupation group was 49.7%, students and agriculture were respectively 14.4% and 8.1%. 7. By the complaints of the patient, most of all were for respiratory tract, those are coughing (56.9%), chest tightness (35.6%), sore throat (24.8%), and so forth. 8. By the injured domestic animal, the Dog was most highly injured with 46.2%.
