  • It has been widely accepted that expert systems must reason from multiple sources of information that is to some degree evidential - uncertain, imprecise, and occasionally inaccurate - called evidential information. Evidence theory (Dempster/Shafet theory) provides one of the most general framework for representing evidential information compared to its alternatives such as Bayesian theory or fuzzy set theory. Many expert system applications require evidence to be specified in the continuous domain - such as time, distance, or sensor measurements. However, the existing evidence theory does not provide an effective approach for dealing with evidence about continuous variables. As an extension to Strat's pioneeiring work, this paper provides a new combination rule, a new method for mass function transffrmation, and a new method for rendering joint mass fuctions which are of great utility in evidence theory in the continuous domain.

Abstract An incomplete planning domain theory can cause an inconsistency problem in a noisy domain, allowing two opposite operators to be applied to a state. To solve the problem, we present a novel method to learn a negative precondition as control knowledge by introducing a three-valued logic for state description. However, even though the control knowledge is unknown to a machine, it is implicitly known as opposite concept to a human. To learn the implicit concept, we mechanically generate a cycle composed of opposite operators from a domain theory and extract opposite literals through experimenting the operators. A learned rule can simplify the operator by removing a redundant precondition while preventing inconsistency.

  • Within the framework of prosodic phonology (or the theory of phonology-syntax connection), the rhythm unit is not regarded as a domain of phonological rules. But I argue in this paper that the rhythm unit functions as a domain of phonological rules in Korean. I discuss five phonological rules whose domain of application is the rhythm unit.

  • A nonlinear time-domain strip theory for vertical wave loads and ship responses is to be investigated. The hydrodynamic memory effect is approximated by a higher order differential equation without convolution. The ship is modeled as a non-uniform Timoshenko beam. Numerical calculations are presented for the S175 Containership translating with the forward speed in regular waves. The approach described in this paper can be used in evaluating ship motions and wave loads in extreme wave conditions and validating nonlinear phenomena in ship design.

  • This paper proposes a novel time-domain homogenization model combining the viscoelastic constitutive law with Eshelby's inclusion theory-based micromechanics model to predict the mechanical behavior of the particle reinforced composite material. The proposed model is intuitive and straightforward capable of predicting composites' viscoelastic behavior in the time domain. The isotropization technique for non-uniform stress-strain fields and incremental Mori-Tanaka schemes for high volume fraction are adopted in this study. Effects of the imperfectly bonded interphase layer on the viscoelastic behavior on the dynamic mechanical behavior are also investigated. The proposed model is verified by the direct numerical simulation and DMA (dynamic mechanical analysis) experimental results. The proposed model is useful for multiscale analysis of viscoelastic composite materials, and it can also be extended to predict the nonlinear viscoelastic response of composite materials.

  • This research deals with the study of the Thomson heating effect in magneto-thermoelastic homogeneous isotropic rotating medium, influenced by linearly distributed load and as a result of modified couple stress theory. The charge density is taken as a function of the time of the induced electric current. The heat conduction equation with energy dissipation and with hyperbolic two-temperature (H2T) is used to formulate the model of the problem. Laplace and Fourier transforms are used to solve this mathematical model. Various components of displacement, temperature change, and axial stress as well as couple stress are obtained from the transformed domain. To get the solution in physical domain, numerical inversion techniques have been employed. The Thomson effect with GN (Green-Nagdhi) -III theory and Modified Couple Stress Theory (MCST) is shown graphically on the physical quantities.

  • This survey paper reviews robust control problems in both frequency domain and time domain. Robust control is focused on model uncertainties such as modeling error, system parameter variations, and disturbances. Robust control design problems are discussed according to parameter uncertainty, polytopic uncertainty, and norm-bounded uncertainty. Nowadays, robust control theory is combined with various control theory such as model predictive control, adaptive control, intelligent control, and time delay control.

  • Family researchers had devoted little attention to Choice, Exchange theory by the time 1960. Being anchored by Thibaut & kelley(1959), this theory becomes one of the most widely used theoretical frameworks for family research. Waller's(1938) famous rating-dating hypothesis was intrinsically an exchange formulation. Blood and Wolfe(1960) employed the concept of rewards in their theory of family power. Farber(1964) also used the reward concept in his theory of permanent availability. Heer's(1964) specific application of its concepts to spousal power was among its earliest uses in the family. The general principle or most general proposition of the theory is that humans avoid costly behavior and seek rewarding statuses, to the end maxmize profits. This review will attempt to show that Choice, Exchange theory is applicable to the several arenas of family interaction and that it can provide an explanation for family behavior. Subjects such as mate selection, marital unstability, family cohesion, spousal power, the problems of aged, family co-unseling, and so on are included. By discussing research findings from a perspective of rewrds and costs this review will show that the application of the theory is not limited to one or two substative specialities with in the family domain. After all Choice, Exchange theory is truly general and can be productively applied to any domain of human behavior.

  • Nowadays it is very necessary to generate artificial accelerograms because of lack of adequate earthquake records and vast usage of time-history dynamic analysis to calculate responses of structures. According to the lack of natural records, the best choice is to use proper artificial earthquake records for the specified design zone. These records should be generated in a way that would contain seismic properties of a vast area and therefore could be applied as design records. The main objective of this paper is to present a new method based on wavelet theory to generate more artificial earthquake records, which are compatible with target spectrum. Wavelets are able to decompose time series to several levels that each level covers a specific range of frequencies. If an accelerogram is transformed by Fourier transform to frequency domain, then wavelets are considered as a transform in time-scale domain which frequency has been changed to scale in the recent domain. Since wavelet theory separates each signal, it is able to generate so many artificial records having the same target spectrum.

  • In this paper, Soil-Structure Interaction (SSI) effect is investigated using a new and integrated approach. Faster solution of time dependant differential equation of motion is achieved using numerical representation of wavelet theory while dynamic Infinite Elements (IFE) concept is utilized to effectively model the unbounded soil domain. Combination of the wavelet theory with IFE concept lead to a robust, efficient and integrated technique for the solution of complex problems. A direct method for soil-structure interaction analysis in a two dimensional medium is also presented in time domain using the frequency dependent transformation matrix. This matrix which represents the far field region is constructed by assembling stiffness matrices of the frequency dependant infinite elements. It maps the problem into the time domain where the equations of motion are to be solved. Accuracy of results obtained in this study is compared to those obtained by other SSI analysis techniques. It is shown that the solution procedure discussed in this paper is reliable, efficient and less time consuming as compared to other existing concepts and procedures.
