Unconstrained Numeral Recognition Using Dithering and Multiple Modular MLPs (디더링과 모듈 구조의 다중 MLP를 이용한 무제약 필기체 숫자 인식)

  • In this paper, we propose a method of unconstrained handwritten numeral recognition using image dithering and multiple modular MLPs. The set of sample numeral patterns is subdivided into clusters which are extended by their radius. On each extended cluster, we constructed MLPs network as the expert recognizer of corresponding cluster. The gating network is also trained by an MLPs to weigh the outputs of expert MLPs. In training and test phase of the recognizer, we utilize the multiple dithered numeral images and the combination of the outputs for corresponding dithered images. Experimental results show that our recognition method works very well.

  • This paper presents a new optical phase stabilization technique for interferometric such as Mach-Zehnder interferometers or Homodyne detectors. The proposed technique can lock such interferometric systems in their maximum/minimum optical outputs without using a dither signal. The phase control scheme is a modified steepest decent algorithm, and is analyzed in terms of a delta modulation approach. It is also applicable to low-repetition rate pulsed interferometric systems in which conventionally used dithering method is difficult to be applied.

  • Due to electrical cross-coupling between modulation voltage and photodetector output in a closed-loop fiber optic gyro, deadzone inevitably occurs. In this paper, deadzone error by cross-coupling effect was analyzed and the overcoming method was suggested. Simulation and measurement results show the main reason for deadzone is mainly related to electrical cross-coupling, and it can be effectively reduced by square-wave dithering method.

  • The gyroscopes have been used as a suitable inertial instrument for the navigation guidance and attitude controls. The accuracy as very sensitive sensor is limited by the lock-in region (dead band) by the frequency coupling between two counter-propagating waves at low rotation rates. This frequency coupling gives no phase difference and an angular increment is not detected. This problem can be overcome by the mechanical dithering. The purpose of the mechanical dithering is to suppress the dead band, oscillate the monoblock about the rotation axis and add an external rotation rate. This paper presents the theoretical considerations of the mechanical performances of dither on the basis of the loading condition and angular characteristics due to the piezoelement deformation and the validity of theoretical equations are compared through FEM (Finite Element Method) simulations.

  • In this paper, we propose a fast partial distortion algorithm using normalized dithering matching scan to get uniform distribution of partial distortion which can reduce only unnecessary computation significantly. Our algorithm is based on normalized dithering order matching scan and calibration of threshold error using LOG value for each sub-block continuously for efficient elimination of unlike candidate blocks while keeping the same prediction quality compared with the full search algorithm. Our algorithm reduces about 60% of computations for block matching error compared with conventional PDE (partial distortion elimination) algorithm without any prediction quality, and our algorithm will be useful to real-time video coding applications using MPEG-4 AVC or MPEG-2.

Precise Temperature Control by Locking on the Fixed point of Gallium (갈륨의 고정점을 이용한 정밀 온도제어)

  • The new enhanced method of temperature control need not any reference temperature, the system itself can find the melting temperature of gallium as a reference point by dithering input heat flux. If gallium is in melting state, the latent heat of fusion works, so gallium temperature does not change on dithering input heat flux. Also, the control method can determine the state of gallium; solid, liquid, or melting state by investigating the temperature in gallium. We apply this new temperature stabilization method to stabilize a Fabry-Perot cavity, which serves as a ultimate length measurement technique. We achieved 1 mK-temperature stability and 1.5426 nm/ 95 mm-length stability over 10 hours.

Flexure Error Analysis of RLG based INS (링레이저 자이로 관성항법시스템의 편향 오차 해석)

  • Any input acceleration that bends RLG dithering axis causes flexure error, which is a source of the noncommutative error that can not be compensated by simply using integrated gyro sensor output. This paper introduces noncommutative error equations that define attitude errors caused by flexure errors. In this paper, flexure error is classified as sensor level error if the sensing axis coincides with the dithering axis and as system level error if the two axes do not coincide. The relationship between gyro output and the rotation vector is introduced and is used to define the coordinate transformation matrix and angular motion. Equations are derived for both sensor level and system level flexure error analysis. These equations show that RLG based INS attitude error caused by flexure is directly proportional to time, amount of input acceleration and the dynamic frequency of the vehicle.

Improving the TCP Retransmission Timer Adjustment Mechanism for Constrained IoT Networks

  • TCP is considered as one of the major candidate transport protocols even for constrained IoT networks..In our previous work, we investigated the congestion control mechanism of the uIP TCP. Since the uIP TCP sets the window size to one segment by default, managing the retransmission timer is the primary approach to congestion control. However, the original uIP TCP sets the retransmission timer based on the fixed RTO, it performs poorly when a radio duty cycling mechanism is enabled and the hidden terminal problem is severe. In our previous work, we proposed a TCP retransmission timer adjustment scheme for uIP TCP which adopts the notion of weak RTT estimation of CoCoA, exponential backoffs with variable limits, and dithering. Although our previous work showed that the proposed retransmission timer adjustment scheme can improve performance, we observe that the scheme often causes a node to set the retransmission timer for an excessively too long time period. In this work, we show that slightly modifying the dithering mechanism of the previous scheme is effective for improving TCP fairness.

Design of a High-Resolution DCO Using a DAC (DAC를 이용한 고해상도 DCO 설계)

  • Dithering scheme has been widely used to improve the resolution of DCO(Digitally Controlled Oscillator) in conventional ADPLLs(All Digital Phase Locked Loop). In this paper a new resolution improvement scheme is proposed where a simple DAC(Digital-to-Analog Converter) is employed to overcome the problems of dithering scheme. The frequencies are controled by varactors in coarse, fine, and DAC bank. The DAC bank consists of an inversion mode NMOS varactor. The other varactor banks consist of PMOS varactors. Each varactor bank is controlled by 8bit digital signal. The proposed DCO has been designed in a $0.13{\mu}m$ CMOS process. Measurement results shows that the designed DCO oscillates in 2.8GHz~3.5GHz and has a frequency tuning range of 660MHz and a resolution of 73Hz at 2.8GHz band. The designed DCO exhibits a phase noise of -119dBc/Hz at lMHz frequency offset. The DCO core consumes 4.2mA from l.2V supply. The chip area is $1.3mm{\times}1.3mm$ including pads.

A Performance Comparison of DSE-MMA and DQE-MMA Adaptive Equalization Algorithm using Dither Signal (Dither 신호를 이용한 DSE-MMA와 DQE-MMA 적응 등화 알고리즘의 성능 비교)

  • This paper compares the equalization performance of the DSE-MMA (Dithered Signed Error-MMA) and DQE-MMA (Dithered Quantized Error-MMA) adaptive equalization algorithm based on the dither signal in order to reduce the intersymbol interference occurs at communication channel. These algorithm was emerged in ordr to reduction of arithmetic operation than current MMA, it makes the independent and identical distribute the quantized error component by performing the 1 or N bit quautizer after adding the dither singal in obtaining the error signal for adapting process. It is possible to improve the robustness performance of adaptive algorithm, but degrade the MSE performance in steady state by dither signal. The paper directly compare the DSE-MMA and DQE-MMA adaptive equalization performance of the same concept of dithering in the same communication channel and signal to noise ratio by computer simulation. As a result of simulation, the DQE-MMA has more better in the every performance index, equalizer output constellation, residual isi, MSE and SER performance, but not in convergence speed.
