Current data on reproductive characters of endemic and native species are essential to provide a strategy for the conservation of these species. Red pine (Pinus densiflora Sieb. & Zucc.) is one of the dominant, native tree species in Korea, but its reproductive ecology is not well-known. In 1997, the pattern of variation in cone and seed yields contributing to the conservation of declining populations of red pines was examined. Plant height and dbh were measured, and several new cones were collected from each tagged tree after counting the number of cones on each tree. For a subset of cones sampled, the number of fertile scales, the number of seeds at three development stages (early/late aborted, and filled seed), seed wing size, wing color, and individual filled seed mass were measured. The three sites which differed significantly in mean plant size also differed in mean cone and seed production per plant. However further analyses showed that most variation in characters examined occurred among plants within sites, but not among sites. An average of 90% of the potential seeds on the cones aborted at an early developmental stage, demonstrating that early abortion is a major factor affecting the number of filled seeds per cone. Individual seed mass was the only character which exhibited significant variations among sites as well as among trees within sites. Individual seed mass was overall negatively correlated with both the percentage of late abortion and the number of old cones per plant, suggesting that both the past and current years' reproductive activities have caused variations in seed mass. The potential dispersal distance of red pine seeds is quite large. However, wing loading was correlated with seed mass and number in a complex pattern across the sites. Distribution of seeds with varied colored wings differed among sites and among trees within sites. These results suggest that red pines at different sites might possess different strategies to cope with selection pressures acting during the final phase of reproduction, from seed dispersal to establishment. Then the ‘fitted’ red pine trees at each site should be identified and managed to conserve or restore populations.

In this paper, we present a new method for classifying malicious URLs to reduce cases of learning difficulties due to unfamiliar and difficult terms related to information protection. This study plans to extract only visually distinguishable features within the URL structure and compare them through map learning algorithms, and to compare the contribution values of the best map learning algorithm methods to extract features that have the most impact on classifying malicious URLs. As research data, Kaggle used data that classified 7,046 malicious URLs and 7.046 normal URLs. As a result of the study, among the three supervised learning algorithms used (Decision Tree, Support Vector Machine, and Logistic Regression), the Decision Tree algorithm showed the best performance with 83% accuracy, 83.1% F1-score and 83.6% Recall values. It was confirmed that the contribution value of https is the highest among whether to use https, sub domain, and prefix and suffix, which can be visually distinguished through the feature contribution of Decision Tree. Although it has been difficult to learn unfamiliar and difficult terms so far, this study will be able to provide an intuitive judgment method without explanation of the terms and prove its usefulness in the field of malicious URL detection.
A range mosaic query returns distribution of data within the query region as a pattern of mosaic, whereas a range aggregate query returns a single aggregate value of data within the query region. The range mosaic query divides a query region by a multi-dimensional grid, and calculates aggregate values of grid cells. In this paper, we propose a new type of query, range mosaic query and a new operator, mosaic-by, with which the range mosaic queries can be represented. In addition, we suggest efficient algorithms for processing range mosaic queries using an aggregate R-tree. The algorithm that we present computes aggregate results of every mosaic grid cell by one time traversal of the aggregate R-tree, and efficiently executes the queries with only a small number of node accesses by using the aggregate values of the aggregate R-tree. Our experimental study shows that the range mosaic query algorithm is reliable in terms of performance for several synthetic datasets and a real-world dataset.
Background: Spatial structure of plants in a population reflects complex interactions of ecological and evolutionary processes. For dioecious plants, differences in reproduction cost between sexes and sizes might affect their spatial distribution. Abiotic heterogeneity may also affect adaptation activities, and result in a unique spatial structure of the population. Thus, we examined sex- and size-related spatial distributions of old-growth forest of dioecious tree Torreya nucifera in extremely heterogeneous Gotjawal terrain of Jeju Island, South Korea. Methods: We generated a database of location, sex, and size (DBH) of T. nucifera trees for each quadrat ($160{\times}300m$) in each of the three sites previously defined (quadrat A, B, C in Site I, II, and III, respectively). T. nucifera trees were categorized into eight groups based on sex (males vs. females), size (small vs. large trees), and sex by size (small vs. large males, and small vs. large females) for spatial point pattern analysis. Univariate and bivariate spatial analyses were conducted. Results: Univariate spatial analysis showed that spatial patterns of T. nucifera trees differed among the three quadrats. In quadrat A, individual trees showed random distribution at all scales regardless of sex and size groups. When assessing univariate patterns for sex by size groups in quadrat B, small males and small females were distributed randomly at all scales whereas large males and large females were clumped. All groups in quadrat C were clustered at short distances but the pattern changed as distance was increased. Bivariate spatial analyses testing the association between sex and size groups showed that spatial segregation occurred only in quadrat C. Males and females were spatially independent at all scales. However, after controlling for size, males and females were spatially separated. Conclusions: Diverse spatial patterns of T. nucifera trees across the three sites within the Torreya Forest imply that adaptive explanations are not sufficient for understanding spatial structure in this old-growth forest. If so, the role of Gotjawal terrain in terms of creating extremely diverse microhabitats and subsequently stochastic processes of survival and mortality of trees, both of which ultimately determine spatial patterns, needs to be further examined.

Tree roots can enhance soil shear strength and slope stability. However, there has been a limited study about root reinforcement of major tree species in Korea because of some experimental difficulties. Thus, this study was conducted to analyze the performance of Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi) and Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) which are two common plantation species in Korea. Profile wall method was used to measure the spatial distribution of root system and its diameter within 15 soil walls of Japanese larch stand and 13 soil walls of Korean pine stand in Taehwa University Forest, Seoul National University, Korea. Root tensile properties of each species were assessed in the laboratory, and root reinforcements were estimated by Wu model. The study observed that the number and cross-sectional area (CSA) of root in both species could tend to decrease with soil depth. Especially, CSA were well-fitted to exponential functions of soil depth. Mean root area ratios (RAR) were 0.03% and 0.10% for Japanese larch and Korean pine, respectively. Estimated root reinforcement from Wu model were, on the average, 4.04 kPa for Japanese larch and 12.26 kPa for Korean pine. Overall, it was concluded that root reinforcement increased the factor of safety (Fs) of slope for small-scale landslide as the result of two-dimensional (2-D) infinite slope stability analysis considering vegetation effects.
Juniperus chinensis (Cupressaceae) is a valuable woody plant resource, but this rare plant is only distributed in restricted regions in Korea. In this study, we surveyed the geographic distribution regions, variation of sex ratio and the dynamics of natural populations of J. chinensis. in order to establish conservation strategies for the sustainable conservation of this important resource tree. The 17 natural populations of J. chinensis are restrictively distributed in the shore cliffs of (1) Ulleungdo island, (2) Gyeongju-si to Gangneung-si of the eastern coast, the riverside cliff along (3) Donggang-river of Jungsun-gun and Pyeongchang-gun and (4) branch of Nakdonggang-river in Uiseong-gun. The populations in Ulleungdo island showed continuous population distribution of over 200 individuals, but populations in other regions had discontinuous population distribution of under 200. The population of J. chinensis surveyed in Korea was estimated in ca. 3,200 individuals. The sex ratio (male/female) among populations of J. chinensis was diverse with variation from 0.46~1.67 range, but showed no significance. The sex ratio of the total individuals by species level was 0.74, and the percentage of female tree was significantly higher than the male. The results of dynamics analysis within population among regions showed that seedlings and saplings of J. chinensis in three regions surveyed were continuously regenerating. The distribution of DBH class showed a stable population structure of inverse J shape graph, but fragmentation and decrease in populations because of invading broad-leaved shrubs and trees from the surroundings were concerned. Further studies, and in situ and ex situ conservation strategies for the sustainable conservation on natural populations of this rare resources woody plant, J. chinensis in Korea are recommended.

Classification tree algorithms including as CART by Brieman et al.(1984) in some aspects, recursively partition the data space with the aim of making the distribution of the class variable as pure as within each partition and consist of several steps. SUPPORT(smoothed and unsmoothed piecewise-polynomial regression trees) method of Chaudhuri et al(1994), a weighted averaging technique is used to combine piecewise polynomial fits into a smooth one. We focus on applying SUPPORT to a binary class variable. Logistic model is considered in the caculation techniques and the results are shown good classification rates compared with other methods as CART, QUEST, and CHAID.

This paper proposes a method to find a tree with the maximum number of terminals that can be connected by a given length when numerous terminals distributed in a cluster form are given to the Euclidean plane R2 with several constraints. First constraint is that a given terminal is distributed in a cluster form, second is that a given length cannot connect all terminals in the tree, and third is that there is no curved connection between each terminal. This paper proposes a method to establish more efficient interconnections within terminals distributed in a cluster form by improving a randomly distributed memetic genetic algorithm. The construction of interconnections has been extensively used in design-related fields, from networking to architecture. Additionally, in real life, the construction of interconnections is mostly distributed in the form of clusters. Therefore, the heuristic algorithm proposed in this paper can be effectively utilized in real life and is expected to provide various cost savings.
We present a novel algorithm for creating 2D maps tailored for autonomous navigation within orchards. Recognizing that fruit trees in orchards are typically aligned in rows, our primary goal is to accurately detect these tree rows and project this information onto the map. Initially, we propose a simple algorithm that recognizes trees from point cloud data by analyzing the spatial distribution of points. We then introduce a method for detecting fruit tree rows based on the positions of recognized fruit trees, which are integrated into the 2D orchard map. Validation of the proposed approach was conducted using real-world orchard point cloud data acquired via LiDAR. The results demonstrate high tree detection accuracy of 90% and precise tree row mapping, confirming the method's efficacy. Additionally, the generated maps facilitate the development of natural navigation paths that align with the orchard's layout.
