In this study, a liquid sheet type co-axial nozzle has been used to investigate the turbulent atomization characteristics which could result in the experimental data to be used in designing a jet nozzle with high performance. Image processing technique and immersion sampling method were employed to measure droplet size. In atomizing characteristics, droplet size distributions and absolute droplet sizes, SMD(Sauter Mean Diameter) have been investigated in the wide ranges of flow field depending upon the air-water mass ratios. And the comparisons between the present data and the semi-empirical curves have been conducted semi-empirical correlation for SMD has been derived in the present analysis.
As wind flows around a sharp-edged body, the resulting separated flow becomes complicated, with multiple separations and reattachments as well as vortex recirculation. This widespread and unpredictable phenomenon has long been studied academically as well as in engineering applications. In this study, the flow characteristics around rectangular prisms with five different aspect ratios were determined through wind tunnel experiments and a detached eddy simulation, that placed the objects in a simulated deep turbulent boundary layer at $Re=4.6{\times}10^4$. A series of rectangular prisms with the same height (h = 80 mm), different longitudinal lengths (l = 0.5h, h, and 2h), or different transverse widths (w = 0.5h, h, and 2h) were employed to observe the effects of the aspect ratio. Furthermore, five wind directions ($0^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, and $45^{\circ}$) were selected to observe the effects of the wind direction. The simulated results of the surface pressure were compared to the wind tunnel experiment results and the existing results of previous papers. The vortex and spectrum were also analyzed to determine the detailed flow structure around the body. The paper also highlights the pressure distribution around the rectangular prisms with respect to the different aspect ratios. With an increasing transverse width, the surface suction pressure on the top and side surfaces becomes stronger. In addition, depending on the wind direction, the pressure coefficient experiences a large variation and can even change from a negative to a positive value on the side surface of the cube model.
The upflow Biobead$^{(R)}$ process, one of biological aerated filters (BAF), which was used commercially, invented for removal of organic materials and nitrification. This process was modified to enhance the ability of denitrification through the induction of pre-anoxic tank. In this research, we investigated the effects of hydraulic retention time (HRT) and backwashing period in aerobic tank. The characteristics of nitrifying bacteria, which are composed of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB), also investigated using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Even though the HRT was shortened, the efficiency of nitrification was not decreased when the organic loading rate and ammonium-nitrogen loading rate were $2.10kg/m^3/day$ and $0.25kg/m^3/day$, respectively. And then the distribution ratios of AOB and NOB showed the similar patterns. However, when the backwashing period was lengthened from 12 hours to 24 hours in aerobic 1 tank, the nitrification efficiency was decreased to 63.9% from 89.2%. The results of FISH explained that this decrease of nitrification efficiency was caused by the decrease of distribution ratio of AOB in aerobic 1 tank. The nitrification efficiencies of aerobic 1 and aerobic 2 tank were increased when the backwashing period was lengthened because of relative high distribution ratios of nitrifying bacteria.
Here, the dynamic instability characteristics of aero-thermo-mechanically stressed functionally graded plates are investigated using finite element procedure. Temperature field is assumed to be a uniform distribution over the plate surface and varied in thickness direction only. Material properties are assumed to be temperature dependent and graded in the thickness direction according to simple power law distribution. For the numerical illustrations, silicon nitride/stainless steel is considered as functionally graded material. The aerodynamic pressure is evaluated based on first-order high Mach number approximation to the linear potential flow theory. The boundaries of the instability region are obtained using the principle of Bolotin's method and are conveniently represented in the non-dimensional excitation frequency-load amplitude plane. The variation dynamic instability width is highlighted considering various parameters such as gradient index, temperature, aerodynamic and mechanical loads, thickness and aspect ratios, and boundary condition.
Over 30% of domestic soil contamination has occurred via petroleum products and complex oil. Moreover, contamination by complex oil is more intense than it is by a single petroleum product species. In this study, we analyzed sectional TPH (total petroleum hydrocarbon) pattern and sectional ratio of current domestically distributed petroleum products, such as kerosene, diesel, bunker C, and lubricant and complex oils, to determine pollution characteristics of the soil. In the TPH pattern, kerosene, which is a light distillate, had an early retention time, and lubricant oil, which is a heavy distillate, had a late retention time in the gas chromatogram. In addition, we obtained a complexly contaminated soil via diesel and lubricant oil from the Navy and inspected it for its ratio of complex oil species. The inspection results showed that this soil was contaminated with 85% diesel and 15% lubricant oil. The method developed in this study could be used to determine complex petroleum sources and ratios at sites with accidentally contaminated soil.

Some deep drawing characteristics at elevated temperatures were investigated for the SCPI steel sheets by using a Cr-coated die. For this investigation, six different temperatures between room temperature and 250$\^{C}$, and six different drawing ratios ranging from 2.4 to 2.9 were considered. As a result, the limiting drawing ratio, the maximum drawing force and the maximum drawing depth were found to be affected sensitively by temperature, and more stable through-thickness strain distribution was observed at elevated temperatures. Some experimental results compared favorably with theoretical results obtained by using the finite element method.
Objectives: In this study, the size distribution of airborne particulates ($PM_{10}$) was measured by using Cascade Impactors. The purpose of this study was to assess the size distribution of metal and ionic materials of $PM_{10}$. Methods: Samples were collected in the Kunsan industrial complex from April 2006 to January 2007. Results: The mass fraction of $PM_{10}$ had a bimodal distribution between 2.1-3.1 ${\mu}M$, and the average mass fraction of particles less than 2.1-3.1 ${\mu}M$ was 47%. Average concentrations of PM10 were 68.05 ${\mu}g/m^3$ and seasonal concentration 95.44 ${\mu}g/m^3$ for spring, 49.03 ${\mu}g/m^3$ for summer, 81.99 ${\mu}g/m^3$ for fall, 52.66 ${\mu}g/m^3$ for winter, respectively. Conclusions: Seasonal variations of $PM_{10}$ were significant for showing peak values in spring. The average concentrations of Cd, Cr, Pb, and Fe were 1.54, 4.51, 14.11, and 254.3 $ng/m^3$, respectively. The ratios of fine particles to total mass were 0.47 for $PM_{10}$, 0.45 for Cr, and 0.16 for Fe, 0.91 for Cd and 0.49 for Pb, respectively.
Warm deep drawability in a square cup drawing was investigated using a newly developed high-strength steel sheet with retained austenite that was transformed into martensite during formation. For this investigation, six different temperatures between room temperature and 250℃, and five different drawing ratios ranging from 2.2 to 2.6 were considered. The results showed that the maximum drawing force and the drawing depth were affected by the change in temperature, and a more stable thickness strain distribution was observed at elevated temperatures. However, blue shortness occurred at over 200℃. FEM analysis using the LS-DYNA code was used to compare the experimental results with the numerical results for the thickness strain distribution.
In this study, street canyons with a higher downwind building (so called, step-up street canyons) are considered for understanding characteristics of flow and reactive pollutants' dispersion as a basic step to understand the characteristics in wider urban areas. This study used a CFD_NIMR_SNU coupled to a chemistry module just including simple $NO_X-O_3$ photochemical reactions. First, flow characteristics are analyzed in step-up street canyons with four aspect ratios (0.33, 0.47, 0.6, 0.73) defined as ratios of upwind building heights to downwind building height. The CFD_NIMR_SNU reproduced very well the main features (that is, vortices in the street canyons) which appeared in the wind-tunnel experiment. Wind speed within the street canyons became weak as the aspect ratio increased, because volume of flow incoming over the upwind building decreased. For each step-up street canyon, chemistry transport model was integrated up to 3600 s with the time step of 0.5 s. The distribution patterns of $NO_X$ and $O_3$ were largely dependent on the mean flow patterns, however, $NO_X$ and $O_3$ concentrations were partly affected by photochemical reactions. $O_3$ concentration near the upwind lower region of the street canyons was much lower than background concentration, because there was much reduction in $O_3$ concentration due to NO titration there. Total amount of $NO_X$ in the street canyons increased with the aspect ratio, resulting from the decrease of mean wind intensity.
