  • The serum total cholesterol levels were measured by Rosenthal modified method for the insured persons who had passed the medical examination in a life insurance company, Seoul. The sera were obtained from 1,878 adults, 626 males and 1,252 fermales, from sep 1980 to Dec. 1981. The results obtained in the measurement were as follows; 1. The mean and standard deviation of serum cholesterol level in the healthy insured persons were $163{\pm}$ in male, and $157{\pm}24mg%$ in female. The difference of the values between male and female showed statistical signifi- (p<0.01). With regard to sex and age differences, female were significantly higher than male in the 10's, and male were higher than female in the 20's and 50's between both sexes. 2. The cholesteol of male was gradully increased about 12mg% according to the increase of every 10-year interval, but no increase was observed from the 40's to the 50's. The cholesterol level of female was higher in the 10's than in the 20's, and was increased gradually from the 20's to the 50's. 3. No significant difference in serum total cholesterol levels between the insured persons and other normal Korean groups was observed; the frequency distribution of the cholestrol level for the population showed normal distribution.

  • PURPOSES: The new methodology is proposed for estimation of long-term performance and pavement life based on the national highway database in Daejeon area. Furthermore, this study tried to verify the applicability of performance estimation using NHPCI (National Highway Pavement Condition Index) on tendency of pavement deterioration as time goes by under Korean road environments. METHODS: Reliability theories are applied to estimate the mean life and to determine the appropriate distribution using 3 levels of traffic loads (high, medium, low) based on maintenance and rehabilitation history data for 15 years. RESULTS: As a result, Lognormal distribution is suitable for explanation of pavement lifetime in Daejeon area regardless of traffic loads. In addition, we found that the results of mean life and maintenance timing based on NHPCI for the pavement sections of 3 levels of traffic loads are available. CONCLUSIONS: Based on this study, it was found that mean life of high, medium and low levels of traffic loads are about 8.1 years, 12.2 years and 12.7 years, respectively. Higher level of traffic loads shorten the pavement mean life.

  • Purpose - There is a lack of research on how much corporate control is sufficient for effective subsidiary business-related decision making. To address this research gap, this study analyzes the impact of the level of control of a Korean corporation's headquarters on its overseas subsidiary performance. Research design, data, methodology - The study's sample comes from the Overseas Korean Business Directory of KOTRA. A multiple regression analysis empirically confirmed the relationship between the headquarters level of control over the subsidiaries and their performance. Results - The results show that the greater an organization's headquarters control over strategic issues, the greater the subsidiary's non-financial performance. However, quick decision-making through decentralization promotes the rapid selection of successful new products that can provide a competitive advantage. Conclusion - This study shows that the impact of control levels on subsidiary performance depends on the type of control involved. Specifically, while low levels of control over operational issues had a positive (+) influence on subsidiary non-financial performance, high control levels led to improved non-financial performance with regard to strategic issues among the subsidiaries.

  • It is well known that the stratified charge combustion has many kind of advantages to combustion characteristics, such as higher thermal efficiency and less CO, NOx levels than conventional homogeneous mixture combustion. Although this combustion can be caused low fuel consumption, it is produced the high unburned hydrocarbon and soot levels because of different equivalence ratio in the combustion chamber. Moreover it has a lot of possibility of low output and misfire if the mixture gas would not be in existence around the spark plug. In this paper, fundamental studies for stratified combustion were carried out using a constant volume combustion chamber. The effect of locally mixture gas distribution according to control the direct injection and premixed injection in the chamber were examined experimentally. In addition, the effects of turbulence on stratified charge combustion process were observed by schlieren photography.

  • This paper presents an efficient method for the problem of determining the spare inventory level of a multi-echelon repairable-item inventory system. We consider the system with two levels of inventory, two levels of service and with a general service time distribution. We propose an algorithm that determines the spare inventory level to satisfy the minimum fill rate with the minimum cost. Experimental results show that the algorithm is accurate and efficient.

  • This study investigates the reliability of the performance levels of moment resisting steel frames subjected to lateral loads such as wind and earthquake. The reliability assessment has been performed with respect to three performance levels: serviceability, damageability, and ultimate limit states. A four-story moment resisting frame is used as a typical example. In the reliability assessment the uncertainties in the loadings and in the capacity of the frame have been considered. The wind and earthquake loads are assumed to have lognormal distribution, and the frame resistance is assumed to have a normal distribution. In order to obtain an appropriate limit state function a linear relation between the loading and the deflection is formed. For the reliability analysis an algorithm has been developed for determination of limit state functions and iterations of the first order reliability method (FORM) procedure. By the method presented herein the multivariable analysis of a complicated reliability problem is reduced to an S-R problem. The procedure for iterations has been tested by a known problem for the purpose of avoiding convergence problems. The reliability indices for many cases have been obtained and also the effects of the coefficient of variation of load and resistance have been investigated.

  • To evaluate the culture conditions in oyster-farming waters, chemical and biological measurements were made in seawater and oysters from six bays around Tongyeong in November and December 2003. Nutrient levels in the seawater were higher in the western area than in the eastern area, in contrast to particulate organic matter and dissolved oxygen levels. The mean total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon ({\sum}PAH) content of the oysters was 194.5-375.9 ng/g dry weight, with four-ring compounds constituting 34.1%-79.6% of PAH. Despite wide temporal variations, a "western > eastern" spatial distribution of PAH was apparent. These low concentrations of PAHs indicate that Tongyeong waters are pristine in terms of PAH contamination. Among the hemocytic biomarkers, only lysosomal activity was significantly reduced in Hansan-Goje Bay, but did not correlate closely with PAH content. This finding indicates that the impact of PAH on cultured oysters is negligible around Tongyeong waters.

  • In accelerated life testing, a relationship is usually assumed between the stress and a parameter of the lifetime distribution. However, the true relationship is not usually known, and therefore, the experimenter may wish to provide protections against the likely departures from the assumed relationship. This paper considers an accelerated life test in which two stress levels are involved, and the lifetime of each test item at a stress level is assumed to have an independent, identical, exponential distribution. For the case where a first order relationship is assumed while the true one is quadratic, a procedure is developed for allocating test items to stress levels such that the bias and/or the variance of the estimated(log-transformed) mean lifetime at the use condition is minimized.

  • Novel mechanism of customized adequacy formulation is proposed in order to enhance micro grids system reliability. The mechanism accounts for 2-levles of load curtailment, and is mainly based on probabilistic load profile and hybrid Distributed Generation (DG) units modeling. The two load curtailments are needed in order to ensure adequate technical constraints at steady state condition during islanding mode of operation. The effectiveness of the proposed formulation has been verified using system independent analytical expressions for the evaluation of both reliability and Expected Energy Not Served (EENS) indices. The evaluation has examined the impact of different penetration levels of Hybrid DG Units in case study islands. Results show the enhancement of the overall distribution system reliability and the recommended conditions for successful islanding mode of operation.

  • In this study, extraction of uranium(VI) from an aqueous nitric acid solution was investigated using tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) as an extractant in an ionic liquid, 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([Cnmim][Tf2N]). The distribution ratio of U(VI) in 1.1 M TBP/[Cnmim][Tf2N] was significantly high when the concentration of nitric acid was low. The value of the distribution ratio decreased as the concentration of the nitric acid increased at lower acidities, and then increased with a nitric acid concentration of up to 8 M. This can be attributed to the different extraction mechanisms of U(VI) based on nitric acid concentrations. Thus, a cation exchange at low acidity levels and an ion-pair extraction at high acidity levels were suggested as the extraction mechanism of U(VI) in the TBP/[Cnmim][Tf2N] system.
