  • Evaluation of the quantitative risk of collision plays a key role in developing the expert system of navigation and collision avoidance. This study analysed thoroughly how to determine the threshold of avoidance sector as described in the new evaluation of collision risk, and suggested the collision risk obtained by the alteration of course and/or speed in order to pass clear qf each danger zone as the threshold of avoidance sector.

  • The measurement of the Underwater Radiated Noise (URN) for the underwater vehicle should consider both the acoustic interference due to the surface reflection and the calculation of the Closet Point of Approach (CPA). In this paper, I tried to analyze the underwater vehicle's URN using the Lloyd's mirror effect. First, the theoretical Lloyd's mirror pattern was compared with the sea trial result, and the sea trial results corresponded well with the theoretical predicted pattern. And then the CPA distance could be estimated by the Lloyd's mirror pattern. As a results, acoustic source level shows the spectral fluctuation due to the acoustic interference of the Lloyd's mirror effect.

  • In modern Anti-Submarine Warfare, there are various ways to locate a submarine in a two-dimensional space. For more effective tracking and attack against a submarine the depth of the target is a critical factor. However, it has been difficult to find out the depth of a submarine until now. In this paper a possible solution to the depth estimation of submarines is proposed utilizing DIFAR (Directional Frequency Analysis and Recording) sonobuoy information such as contact bearings at or prior to CPA (Closest Point of Approach) and the target's Doppler signals. The relative depth of the target is determined by applying the Pythagorean theorem to the slant range and horizontal range between the target and the hydrophone of a DIFAR sonobuoy. The slant range is calculated using the Doppler shift and the target's velocity. the horizontal range can be obtained by applying a simple trigonometric function for two consecutive contact bearings and the travel distance of the target. The simulation results show that the algorithm is subject to an elevation angle, which is determined by the relative depth and horizontal distance between the sonobuoy and target, and that a precise measurement of the Doppler shift is crucial.

  • When VTSOs (Vessel Traffic Service Operator) determine the degree of collision risk for two vessels, they consider comprehensive information about each vessel's course, speed, DCPA, TCPA, and encountering situation. In this study, we proposed a utility function based on the risk attitudes of VTSOs toward the Risk Index (RI). The RI was calculated using the risk of encounter, the risk of approach, and the risk of time for two vessels in order to predict each ship's collision risk from the VTS viewpoint. We obtained each coefficient of the RI and the risk attitude through a survey of collision risks among VTSOs of Korea. In order to verify whether the proposed utility is reasonable, we validated by applying the degree of collision risk to some historical cases of accidents in Busan port along with the Ship of ES value($ES_S$) of ES(Environmental Stress) model.

  • Evaluating the risk of collision quantitatively plays a key role in developing the expert system of navigation and collision avoidance. This study analysed the existing methods of appraising the collision risk, examined the problem that are intrinsic to them, and developed a new approach to its evaluation by using the sech function as an alternative to them. This paper applied the new method in appraising the collision risk and suggested how to decide the safe range of ownship's action.

  • This paper presents the Doppler Scanning technique which enables us to detect the relative positions of moving distributed sources using Doppler frequency shift estimate when the moving source consists of distributed sources with different signature frequencies. Doppler frequency shifts of characteristic frequencies of machinery noise sources such as ship's generator and propeller, with tine along CPA (Closest Point of Approach of moving source) are unique, and can be functioned with respect to each source position. Therefore, this technique can be applied to estimate the relative geometrical positions between machinery noise sources. The Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) which has a high frequency resolution with high time resolution, is adopted for improving accuracy of Doppler frequency shift estimate geometric resolution of machinery positions since machinery noise sources show in general low frequency band characteristics with limited spacial distance. The performance of the technique is examined by the numerical simulations and is verified by the experiment using loudspeaker sources on the roof of the car.

  • Obstacle detection, collision recognition, and avoidance technologies are required the collision avoidance technology for UAVs. In this paper, considering collinear multiple static obstacle, we propose an obstacle detection algorithm using LiDAR and a collision recognition and avoidance algorithm based on CPA. Preprocessing is performed to remove the ground from the LiDAR measurement data before obstacle detection. And we detect and classify obstacles in the preprocessed data using the K-means clustering algorithm. Also, we estimate the absolute positions of detected obstacles using relative navigation and correct the estimated positions using a low-pass filter. For collision avoidance with the detected multiple static obstacle, we use a collision recognition and avoidance algorithm based on CPA. Information of obstacles to be avoided is updated using distance between each obstacle, and collision recognition and avoidance are performed through the updated obstacles information. Finally, through obstacle location estimation, collision recognition, and collision avoidance result analysis in the Gazebo simulation environment, we verified that collision avoidance is performed successfully.
