This paper presents an approach to detect object distance with the use of the recently developed low-cost Kinect sensor. The technique is based on Kinect color depth-image processing and can be used to design various computer-vision applications, such as object recognition, video surveillance, and autonomous path finding. The proposed technique uses keypoint feature detection in the Kinect depth image and advantages of depth pixels to directly obtain the feature distance in the depth images. This highly reduces the computational overhead and obtains the pixel distance in the Kinect captured images.
In this paper, a measurement system of moving distance is developed. The error compensation method is also proposed using the characteristics of walking motion. As personal navigation systems and multimedia systems are emerging into the commericial market, men´s moving distance is considered as one of the important information. GPS offers the information easily but GPS can be used only when the satellites are visible. INS can calculate the moving distance anywhere but error is increased with time due to the sensor bias. In this paper, to detect the human walking distance a measurement system of moving distance only using low-cost accelerometer is developed. The sensor bias is estimated and compensated using the walking motion characteristics. The performanced of the proposed system is verified by experiment.
In this paper, we proposed a wearable respiration measurement system with textile capacitive pressure sensor. Belt typed textile capacitive pressure sensor approach of respiration measurement, from which respiration signatures and rates can be derived in real-time for long-term monitoring, are presented. Belt typed textile capacitive pressure sensor has been developed for this measurement system. the distance change of two plates by the pressure of motion has been used for the respiration measurement in chest area. Respiration rates measured with the textile capacitive pressure sensor was compared with standard techniques on 8 human subjects. Accurate measurement of respiration rate with developed sensor system is shown. The data from the method comparison study is used to confirm theoretical estimates of change in capacitance by the distance change. The current version of respiratory rate detection system using textile capacitive pressure sensor can successfully measure respiration rate. It showed upper limit agreement of $3.7997{\times}10^{-7}$ RPM, and lower limit of agreement of $-3.8428{\times}10^{-7}$ RPM in Bland-Altman plot. From all subject, high correlation were shown(p<0.0001). The proposed measurement method could be used to monitor unconscious persons, avoiding the need to apply electrodes to the directly skin or other sensors in the correct position and to wire the subject to the monitor. Monitoring respiration using textile capacitive pressure sensor offers a promising possibility of convenient measurement of respiration rates. Especially, this technology offers a potentially inexpensive implementation that could extend applications to consumer home-healthcare and mobile-healthcare products. Further advances in the sensor design, system design and signal processing can increase the range and quality of the rate-finding, broadening the potential application areas of this technology.
In this paper, we have extended the research on the infrared sensor which has been limited to the plane. The reflection mechanism of the light on the curved surface is analyzed according to the curvature change and the emitted angle of photodiode and verified through experiments. The difference in the curvature causes a difference in the measurement distance, and also changes the intensity of the light coming into the phototransistor, thereby causing a difference in the output voltage. However, the difference in the output voltage due to the curvature change can be solved by adjusting the emitted angle of the photodiode to minimize the spot area formed on the curved surface regardless of the curvature. Therefore, it is possible to measure the distance by using the infrared sensor regardless of the curvature by aligning the photodiode to the center of the curved surface and adjusting the angle of the photodiode.
A technical performance of the coating depends greatly on the thickness of painting film or coating film. Therefore the confirmed report of the technique to measure accurately is essential to the coating film thickness for the assessment about a coating quality performance. In this paper, two gap sensors - eddy current gap sensor and capacitance gap sensor - which has a different operating principle were used to measure the thickness of a nonmagnetic substance coating film such as paint, enamel or ceramic that was coated on the metallic material. A capacitance gap sensor was used to measure the distance between the sensor head and a coating film and an eddy current gap sensor to measure the distance between the sensor head and a base metal. Then the thickness of a coating film was obtained by the difference of two measurement value. At this result, the suggested dual sensor can measure an arbitrary film thickness to be coated on a base metal as the measurement value of coating thickness exists accurately within the 2% error.
The Non-Contact Optical Sensor using the Hologram Laser for CD Pickup was developed to measure a shape of transparent objects and shown a good performance. Therefore the problems caused by the contact sensor are solved by using the Non-Contact Sensor. The Non-Contact Sensor has to move toward the objects and obtain the Focus Error Signal to measure a position of transparent objects. However, if the distance between the sensor and the object is shorter than the working distance of the objective lens, the sensor will be collided against the objects. In this paper we proposed a new algorithm to estimate the start position of the Focus Error Signal to solve the problems of collision between the sensor and the objects. In addition, we verified that the algorithm is free from the collision in the real time measurement.
This paper reveals a distance estimation algorithm based on multi-code ultrasonic and wireless sensor network. For measuring the distances among the sensor nodes, each ultrasonic transmitter transmits multi-code ultrasonic signal simultaneously. Receivers use cross correlation method to separate the coded signals. The information of measured distances is broadcasted to each sensor node by wireless sensor network. The wireless sensor network measures the distance among the sensor nodes using the received signal strength of the broadcasting. The multi-code ultrasonic have a limitation of measurable distance. And the received signal strength is affected from an environment. This paper measures a distance using ultrasonic and a received signal strength in short range. These measured data are applied to the least square estimation algorithm. By the expansion of the fitting curve, a distance measurement in long range using the received signal strength is compensated. The coupled system reduce the error to an acceptable level.
