Fatigue tests in air and in room temperature water were performed to obtain comparable data and stable crack measuring conditions. In air environment, fatigue crack growth rate was increased with increasing temperature due to an increase in crack tip oxidation rate. In room temperature water, the fatigue crack growth rate was faster than in air and crack path varied on loading conditions. In simulated light water reactor (LWR) conditions, there was little environmental effect on the fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) at low dissolved oxygen or at high loading frequency conditions. While the FCGR was enhanced at high oxygen condition, and the enhancement of crack growth rate increased as loading frequency decreased to a critical value. In fractography, environmentally assisted cracks, such as semi-cleavage and secondary intergranular crack, were found near sulfide inclusions only at high dissolved oxygen and low loading frequency condition. The high crack growth rate was related to environmentally assisted crack. These results indicated that environmentally assisted crack could be formed by the Electrochemical effect in specific loading condition.
Water Pollution of Gwangju Stream was examined for four months from 22 March 1981 to 7 June, 1981. For checking the water pollution, 6 sampling positions were selected 5 from main stream. We assumed that the water pollution of Gwangju stream was due to the organic materials, which came from the domestic sewage. The apparatus for this test were pH meter (Orion model 301), Dissolved Oxygen & Temperature meter(Delta model 1010). The results we obtained are as follows: 1. The average range for mid-stream(sp. 3, 4) was 3. 10~2.73ppm of Dissolved Oxygen(DO), 80.23~102.95ppm of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), 195. 10~165.90ppm of Suspended Solid (SS), 6.6~6.7 of pH. 2. The plankton identification in this survey period showed Cyanophyceae is 4 genera 5 species, Bacillariophycea 11 genera 14 species, Chlorophyceae 8 genera 15 species and Zooplankton 6 genera 7 species: total 29 genera 41 species. 3. To appear dominant plankton in polluted water, there were Paramecium, Euglena and Oscillatoria. 4. The results of biological water analysis were as follows: st. 1 was B-mesosaprobic to oligosaprobic, but st. 4 and st. 5 at stream in the midtown area seemed to be polysaprobic.

Experiments were carried out to investigate the flow and mass transfer characteristics of an orifice nozzle. Measurements of primary and suction flow rates, dissolved oxygen concentration, and electric power were obtained. Vertically injected mixed-jet images were captured by a direct visualization technique with a high speed camera unit. The mass ratio, volumetric mass transfer coefficient, and mass transfer performance were calculated using the measured data. As the primary flow pressure increases, the mass ratio decreases slightly, while the volumetric mass transfer coefficient and electric power increase. As the primary flow pressure increases and the mass ratio decreases, the mass transfer rate increases because of the fine bubbles and wider distribution of the bubbles.
To investigate water mass structure and DO(Dissolved Oxygen) distribution in Chinhae Bay, temperature, salinity and DO were observed in the bay in summer and winter from 1990 to 1993, and two-dimensional tidal current and parameter log($H/U^3$) were computed. Shallow water fronts in the bay were formed in summer in Kaduk channel and the central part of the bay having log($H/U^3$) values of $2.0{\sim}2.5$. Oxygen deficiency at the bottom layer in summer occurred in the western and northern part of the bay with weak tidal current, where the value of log($H/U^3$) was more than about 3.5 and $M_2$ tidal current was less than about 20 cm/s. DO concentration at the bottom layer of Kaduk channel and the central channel of the bay having the strong tidal current was more than about 3.5 mg/l. The isolines of DO concentration were nearly parallel to the isovelocity, and the concentrations correlated with the frontal location. The frontal location and DO distribution were influenced by tidal range, river inflow and meteorological conditions, and also correlated with bottom slope characteristics.

Background: Experiments with small electrochemical apparatus were previously carried out for detecting low-energy neutrinos under irradiation of reactor neutrinos and under natural neutrino environment. The experimental result indicated that the output current of reactor-neutrino irradiated detector was appreciably larger than that of natural environmental one. Usual interaction cross-sections of neutrinos are quite small, so that they do not explain the experimental result at all. Materials and Methods: To understand the experimental data, we propose that some biological products may generate AV-type scalar field B0, leading to a large interaction cross-section. The output current generation is ascribed to an electrochemical process that may be assisted by weak interaction phenomena. Dissolved oxygen concentrations in the detector solution were measured in this study, for the purpose of understanding the mechanism of the detector output current generation. Results and Discussion: It was found that the time evolution of experimental output current was mostly reproduced in simulation calculation on the basis of the measured dissolved oxygen concentration. Conclusion: We mostly explained the variation of experimental data by using the electrochemical half-cell analysis model based on the DO concentration that is consistent to the experiment.

It is the time-varying dissolved oxygen(DO) dynamics that requires controlling for maintaining the DO concentration in the aeration tank. Many linear controllers have thus been applied. Because of the nonlinearity of the oxygen transfer function together with the time-varying respiration rate, however, the linear controllers are found to poorly perform in many cases. To overcome this limitation, a number of advanced controlling techniques have been developed and applied. In this study, designed GA-PI Controller using genetic algorithm(GA). Genetic algorithms(GAs) are search algorithms based on the mechanics of natural selection and natural genetics. As result of computer simulation, GA-PI controller shows the better control performance especially under the condition of the continuously changing DO set-point. This result represents that GA-PI controller can be a good measure to control the DO concentration in the SBR process which requires the sequential DO set-point change to accomplish the nitrification and denitrification in a single reactor.
The purpose of the study was to get the valuable data for developing the new natural fat soaps which have an excellent biodegradation performance. Thus, natural fat soaps mixed with the two types of detergents (AOS and LAS) on the various concentrations were made and the biodegradation of the samples were analysed by Dissolved Oxygen method using active sludge. Also, the results were compared with the commercial synthetic detergents and market soaps. The results from the study were the followings: 1. The plant fat soap and the wasted oil soap with the concentration of 5 mg/l and 15 mg/l had an excellent biodegradation rather than animal fat soap. 2. There was little difference among samples with the concentration of 5 mg/l, but there was much difference among them with the concentration of 15 mg/l. 3. The periods for consuming oxygen of wasted oil soap mixed AOS and LAS was the fastest.
In order to investigate what kind of response anaerobic bifidobacteria has on oxygen stress, five oxygen-tolerant bifidobacteria were isolated from human fecal samples. All were temporarily identified as Bifidobacterium longum through an analysis of carbohydrate utilization patterns and cellular fatty acid profiles. In the presence of oxygen, the lag phase became extended and the cell growth was suppressed. Bifidobacterial cell was able to remove dissolved oxygen in an early stage of growth and to overcome oxygen stress to a certain extent. The cell became long n size and showed a rough surface containing many nodes which were derived from abnormal or incomplete cell division. Cellular fatty acid profiled changed remarkably under a partially aerobic condition, so that the carbon chain of cellular fatty acid became short. All the dimethyl acetals originated from plasmalogen were reduced, any cyclopropane fatty acid, 9, 10-methyleneoctadecanoic acid ($C_{19:0}cyc9,10$), was increased remarkably. Oxygen stress induced a 5.5 kD protein in B. longum JI 1 of the oxygen-teolerant bifidobacteria, that was named Osp protein, and its N-terminal amino acid sequence was as follows: unknown amino acid-Thr-Gly-Val-Arg-Phe-Ser-Asp-Asp-Glu. Therefore, the oxygen-tolerant bifidobacteria seemed to defend against oxygen stress byincreasing the content of short fatty acid and cyclopropane fatty acid, and induction of an oxygen stress protein, but not the plasmalogen.
The Youngsan Lake was constructed to supply agricultural water to the extensive rice fields in the basin of the lake in 1981. Hypoxia has often developed in the bottom water of the lake during the warm season although the water depth is relatively shallow (< 16 m). We investigated the spatial and temporal variations of dissolved oxygen (DO) and physical properties such as water temperature, salinity and turbidity to elucidate the effects of change in physical properties on DO dynamics in the lake. Vertical profiles of DO, temperature, salinity, and water density were also explored to verify the development of stratification in relation to DO variation in the water column. Hypoxia (DO < $2mg\;L^{-1}$) was not observed in the upper regions whereas hypoxia was detected in the lower regions during the warm season. Thermocline generally developed in the lower regions during the warm season unlike the previous studies in which no thermocline was observed. However, water column was well mixed when freshwater water was discharged from the reservoir through the sluice gate of the dike. DO concentrations also decreased when halocline or pycnocline developed during the dry season suggesting that the vertical stratification of water column affects DO dynamics although the water depth is shallow in the Youngsan lake.

The occurrence patterns of Acartia(Copepoda; Calanoida) species, A. erythraea, A. hongi, A. hudsonica, A. ohtsukai, and A. sinjiensis, were examined in the southern coastal waters of Korea in the summer in August 2012. The Acartia species had different spatial distribution according to environmental factors. A. erythraea showed higher density in a semi-closed bay (Gamak, Masan) where the dissolved oxygen was low (<2 mg L-1). A. sinjiensis showed a high density in a semi-closed bay when the chlorophyll-a concentration was >2 ㎍ L-1. A. ohtsukai showed a high density at water temperatures >26℃ and low salinity <30. A. hongi and A. hudsonica showed at water temperatures <27℃ and high dissolved oxygen (>5 mg L-1). These results suggest that environmental factors (temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and chlorophyll-a concentration) may affect the spatial distribution of Acartia species dominant in the southern coasts of Korea in summer.
