  • The crank shafts need anti-corrosion materials. So STS 304 is the essential material to manufacture this shaft. However, it costs more to manufacture the shafts by using only STS 304 than welding of STS 304 to other carbon steels. And it has been difficult to weld this sort of dissimilar materials. They could be unstable in the quality by the conventional arc welding. And also they have a lot of technical problems in manufacturing. But by the friction welding technique, it will be able to be made without such problems. Then, this study aimed not only to develop the optimization of dissimilar friction welding of crank shafts steels of STS 304, SM35C, but also to develop the application technique of the acoustic emission to accomplish in-process real-time quality(such as tensile) evaluation during friction welding of the shafts by the AE technique.

  • In this study, stress analysis using Boundary Element Method (BEM) was carried to investigate stress distribution in the brazing joint between a Hardmetal and a HSS. The two models were proposed to analyze the stress singularity in the interfaces of the brazing joint. The material type, thickness of the filler metal and the length of the vertical brazing adhesive are considered in the BEM analysis. As results, the peak point of the stress is founded to be in the lower interface of the brazed joint. It should be noted that the maximum stress of the peak point is being affected by the thickness and length of the brazing joint.

  • Self-piercing riveting is an joining method of advanced high strength steels (AHSS) and other dissimilar materials. It has attracted considerable interest from the automotive industry. The SPR has become an interesting alternative joining technique for difficult to weld materials such as steels and aluminium alloys. In this paper, self-piercing rivet and anvil for SPR were designed for the joining conditions with AHSS and aluminium alloy. Various conditions of SPR were simulated for the design of rivets and anvils. The simulated results were in good agreement with experimental ones. As a result, over HV500 rivet is desirable to joint SPFC780 AHSS and aluminum alloy.

  • When power cables cross regions with unfavorable thermal conditions, conductor temperatures higher than the design value can occur. This paper proposes the calculation algorithms of the permissible current-carrying capability using the algorithm of calculating the longitudinal conductor temperature distribution of power cables installed in thermally dissimilar soil materials.

  • Hilbert problems are derived to evaluate thermal stress intensity factors for a partially insulated crack subjected to vertically uniform heat flow in infinite bonded dissimilar materials. In case of fully insulated crack surface, the present solutions of thermal stress intensity factors are reduced into the same as the previous results. For the homogeneous material, mode II thermal stress intensity factor only exists. However, in the bonded dissimilar materials, both mode I and II thermal stress intensity factors are obtained. Specially, in this case, mode II thermal stress intensity factor is dominent. Also, thermal stress intensity factors are strongly influenced by the material properties. Thermal stress intensity factors decrease when the degree of insulation decreases.

  • In this study, analysis for fatigue crack propagation behavior of interface and aroud interface under rotary bending stress. Though K values are nearly the same in around interface by BEM 2-D, fatigue crack propagated H.A.Z. Around Interface crack propagation speed is m=0.678 in H.A.Z by Paris' law. In this case(friction welded materials: STS304, SM15C), fatigue crack growth is considered SM15C metal microstructure and elastic flow from this result. Result is more metal microstructute dependence than stress dependence by analysis (BEM 3-D, BEM 2-D) and fatigue crack propagation

  • An integrated analysis for the thermo-elastic deformation, fatigue, wear and brittle damage evolution of the shrink-fitted die with multi stress-ring of dissimilar materials is presented. A simple numerical algorithm for the moving elastic boundaries characterizing the contacts of the insert and multi stress-rings is presented. The initial stress distribution in the die due to shrink-fit is considered and the traction at the die surface contacting with the work piece is obtained by analyzing the elasto-plastic deformation of work piece. Elastic analysis of the separate-type die is performed and then the evolution of brittle damage, wear and fatigue life are predicted. This integrated analysis is applied to the extrusion die with two layers of stress-rings and the results are discussed in detail.

  • Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) pressure vessels are made of forged low alloy steel plates internally clad with an austenitic stainless steel by welding to improve anti-corrosion properties. They display a characteristic behavior of dissimilar metal weld interface during post weld heat treatment (PWHT) and service at high temperature and pressure. In this Study, Metallugical structure of weld interface of SA 508 Class 3 forged steel clad with 309L, Austenitic stainless steel after PWHT was investigated. To estimate the width of the carburized/decarburized bands quantitatively, a model for carbon diffusion was proposed and a theoretical equation was derived.
