  • We have proposed a novel cleaning technology with organic nanoparticles for high-performance TFT array. The surface of the TFT layer becomes more hydrophilic after cleaning by the nanoparticles. This is concluded from the comparison of contact angles for the samples cleaned by various methods. It is found that the drain currents in the subthreshold and off-state regions are less than those for the TFTs cleaned with conventional method.

  • We mainly report recent progress in backlight unit (BLU) for liquid crystal display (LCD) using printed carbon nanotubes (CNTs) including top-gate and lateral gate structures. Lighting performances of CNTBLU and longevity of printed CNT emitters are intensively discussed. Selected issues related with field emission display (FED) using the same emitters also are presented.

  • Two new cell structures for optical compensated bend were proposed. There are two groups of slit electrodes, which are driven by two different signals corresponding to the entire electrode as common electrode. The transmittance was enhanced without increasing the response time and light leakage. Compared with the traditional OCB mode, the increment of the transmittance of each kind is about 90% and 30%.

  • We developed a 4.5" 192${\times}$64 active matrix organic light-emitting diode display on a glass using organic thin-film transistor (OTFT) switching-arrays with two transistors and a capacitor in each sub-pixel. The OTFTs has bottom contact structure with a unique gate insulator and pentacene for the active layer. The width and length of the switching OTFT is 800${\mu}m$ and lO${\mu}m$ respectively and the driving OTFT has 1200${\mu}m$ channel width with the same channel length. On/off ratio, mobility, on-current of switching OTFT and on-current of driving OTFT were $10^6,0.3{\sim}0.5$ $cm^2$/V·sec, order of 10 ${\mu}A$ and over 100 ${\mu}A$, respectively. AMOLEDs composed of the OTFT switching arrays and OLEDs made using vacuum deposition method were fabricated and driven to make moving images, successfully.

  • Dispersion of arc-discharged single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) has been accomplished by a water soluble polymer wrapping functionalization at room temperature. The treated SWNTs were redispersed in both aqueous and many organic solvents and the solutions were found to be stable.

  • A 14.1" XGA (1024${\times}$768) LCD panel with Integrated Black Data Insertion (IBDI) has been world first developed successfully based on the integrated amorphous Silicon TFT gate driver which we previously introduced. The notable features compared with the conventional integrated a-Si TFT gate driver circuit are that the circuit consists of Dual buffer, Carry buffer structure, and Q-node cross charging for stable signal scanning characteristic and prevention of coupling between signal lines.

  • In this paper, a display's emotional image quality can be primarily determined by designing the proper luminance level. Though displays with high luminance are preferred, too much light emission from a display may cause glare or visual fatigue to viewers. To find out the proper luminance level based on various video contents, this study was conducted with an OLED display with a real-black level and a wide color gamut, and with an LCD display with a high luminance level, to set the glare threshold under various conditions. The optimum luminance levels according to the display's loading ratio were found, and the maximum luminance that did not cause a glare in the test is proposed.

  • The discharge characteristics of a flat plasma backlight with long electrode gap are investigated. The effect of operating voltage and repetition rate on brightness and luminance efficiency is investigated. A new high efficacy mode is found at low frequencies around 15-40 KHz; a lumen efficacy of 15.3 lm/W is achieved at a luminance of $2400\;cd/m^2$. In the high brightness mode, present at high voltage, we find a maximum luminance of $5900\;cd/m^2$ at 30KHz.

  • Field emission-back light unit (FE-BLU) was fabricated using carbon nanotube (CNT) emitter. Local dimming and local brightening techniques were achieved, which results in very high contrast ratio. In addition, the motion blur phenomenon, one of the serious problems of liquid crystal display (LCD) with cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL)-BLU, was removed from LCD-TV by using FE-BLU.
