  • When generating spectrum-compatible artificial ground motion in engineering practices, the effect of the variation in fitting parameters on the distribution of the peak ground displacement (PGD) has not yet drawn enough attention. In this study, a method for simulating ground motion matching for multiple targets is developed. In this method, a frequency-dependent amplitude envelope function with statistical parameters is introduced to simulate the nonstationarity of the frequency in earthquake ground motion. Then, several groups of time-history acceleration with different temporal and spectral nonstationarities were generated to analyze the effect of nonstationary parameter variations on the distribution of PGD. The following conclusions are drawn from the results: (1) In the simulation of spectrum-compatible artificial ground motion, if the acceleration time-history is generated with random initial phases, the corresponding PGD distribution is quite discrete and an uncertain number of PGD values lower than the limit value are observed. Nevertheless, the mean values of PGD always meet the requirement in every group. (2) If the nonstationary frequencies of the ground motion are taken into account when fitting the target spectrum, the corresponding PGD values will increase. A correlation analysis shows that the change in the mean and the dispersion values, from before the frequencies are controlled to after, correlates with the modal parameters of the predominant frequencies. (3) Extending the maximum period of the target spectrum will increase the corresponding PGD value and, simultaneously, decrease the PGD dispersion. Finally, in order to control the PGD effectively, the ground motion simulation method suggested in this study was revised to target a specified PGD. This novel method can generate ground motion that satisfies not only the required precision of the target spectrum, peak ground acceleration (PGA), and nonstationarity characteristics of the ground motion but also meets the required limit of the PGD, improving engineering practices.

  • In this study, It is developed a retrofitting procedure of RC column with rectangular section to archive the target displacement at failure. Nonlinear behavior of the column is considered as the equivalent linear system. First, target displacement is determined, and then elastic displacement spectrum is constructed to estimate the equivalent natural vibration period of the SDOF system. After natural vibration period is determined, required strength is calculated using secant stiffness based on the mass of system. In accordance with, obtained force-displacement relationship through non-linear fiber based section analysis, retrofit design was carried out to meet required strength. As a result, retrofitted RC column can confirm that the improved seismic performance. It is observed that the proposed design procedure can be applicable to seismic retrofitting design of columns.

  • Torsional behavior of eccentric structure under seismic leading may cause the stress and/or deformation concentration, which arouse the failure of the structure in an unexpected manner. This study suggests D-R relationship which shows the overall displacement and rotation of the system based on the ultimate displacement capacity of the each lateral load resistant member. Using the suggested D-R relationship and displacement spectrum, the seismic assessment is conducted and verified in comparison with the time history analysis result. Multi-level seismic assessment Is considered which takes multiple seismic hazard levels and respective performance levels into account. Finally, based on the seismic assessment result, seismic rehabilitation process is presented. In this research, two rehabilitation methods are considered. One is done by means of stiffening/strengthening the seismic resistant members, and the other is based on the member ductility. Especially, in the first method, to optimize the rehabilitation result, the rehabilitation problem is modeled as an optimization problem, and solved using BFGS quasi-Newton optimization method.

  • This study investigates the effect of hysteretic characteristics to the Inelastic Demand Spectrum (IDS) which was expressed by an acceleration(Sa) and a displacement response spectrum (Sd). Elasto Perfectly Plastic(EPP) model is used in this study and inelastic demand spectrum (Sa vs, Sd) are obtained from a given target ductility ratio. For a given target ductility ratio IDS can be obtained by using nonlinear time history analysis of single degree of system with forth five recorded earthquake ground motions for stiff soil site. The effect EPP model under demand spectrum is investigated by ductility factor and natural frequency. According to the results obtained in this study IDS has dependency on ductility factor and natural frequency.

  • Current seismic design codes for building structures are based on the method which can provide enough capacity to satisfy objected performance level and exactly evaluate the seismic performance of buildings. The capacity spectrum method using the nonlinear static(pushover) analysis is becoming a popular tool for evaluating the seismic performance of existing and new building structures. By means of a graphical procedure capacity spectrum method esimates the performance level of structure by comparing the capacity of structure with the demand of earthquake ground motion on the structure. In the method the relation between base shear estimated by a nonlinear static analysis and horizontal displacement is used. Capacity spectrum is usually expressed as what represent the responses of the equivalent single degree of freedom (ESDOF) system for the building structures. However there are some problems in converting procedures into ESDOF system which include not considering the effect of higher modes of structures. The objective of this paper is to compare and verify existing methods and suggest the modified capacity spectrum for seismic performance evaluation of building structures.

  • An entire composite structure satellite is developing for the first time in Korea. All of the structure is made of CFRP-composite faced aluminum honeycomb sandwich structure. Here the random and sinusoidal spectrum analysis of the satellite was carried out by using the finite element method. The general spectrum analysis was herein performed but also the PSD (power spectrum density) function for random vibration analysis had been transformed into equivalent time domain function and then transient analysis is conducted. The time history of displacement, acceleration, stress and velocity responses with respect to the PSD input has been achieved by the time dependent transient function transformed from frequency PDS function. It enables one to perform dynamic durability analysis and then expect the life time of the composite structure. The composite faced sandwich structure's spectrum analysis of a domestically-developed satellite, STSAT-3, has been discussed in the present study.

  • In this study, the LC resonators were fabricated with ferrite cores and external capacitors, and then their characteristics were investigated for the purpose of developing new displacement sensor. The frequency dependence of impedance of single resonator was estimated. There were two resonance peaks on the impedance spectrum; one by self inductance and the other by mutual inductance. The resonance frequency was shifted linearly in direct proportion to displacement of the resonator showing the proposed device, a pair of LC resonators, could be used a precision displacement sensor.

  • Monolayers of lipids on a water surface have attracted much interest as models of biological membranes, but also as precursors of multilayer systems promising many technical applications. Until now, many methodologies have been developed in order to gain a better understand. Photoisomerization in monolayers of a novel azobenzene compound, azobenzene dendrimer, was investigated for the first time by means of the absorption spectrum and Maxwell displacement current (MDC) technique. Dendrimers are well-defined macromolecules exhibiting a tree-like structure, first derived by the cascade molecule approach. According to the absorption spectrum, trans-to-cis conversion ratio was estimated to the third generation of azobenzene dendrimer deposited onto a glass substrate. Temperature-dependent induced charge with trans-cis isomerization was also measured by means of MDC technique.

  • In this study a procedure for evaluation of performance point using direct displacement-based design method was developed to enhance the applicability of the method. Parametric study has been performed for the natural period of the structure, yield strength, and the stiffness after the first yield. The proposed method was also applied to a 10-story steel frame. To verify the accuracy of the result, the results from capacity spectrum analysis and time history analysis were compared. The results of the proposed method turned out to match well with the results of capacity spectrum method and the time history analysis.
