  • Experiments were performed to explore the hysteretic performance of steel reinforced concrete (SRC) cross-shaped columns. Nine specimens were designed and tested under the combined action of compression, flexure, shear and torsion. Torsion-bending ratio (i.e., 0, 0.14, 0.21) and steel forms (i.e., Solid - web steel, T - shaped steel, Channel steel) were considered in the test. Both failure processes and modes were obtained during the whole loading procedure. Based on experimental data, seismic indexes, such as bearing capacity, ductility and energy dissipation were investigated in detail. Experimental results suggest that depending on the torsion-bending ratio, failure modes of SRC cross-shaped columns are bending failure, flexure-torsion failure and torsion-shear failure. Shear - displacement hysteretic loops are fuller than torque - twist angle hysteretic curves. SRC cross-shaped columns exhibit good ductility and deformation capacity. In the range of test parameters, the existence of torque does not reduce the shear force but it reduces the displacement and bending energy dissipation capacity. What is more, the bending energy dissipation capacity increases with the rising of displacement level, while the torsion energy dissipation capacity decreases.

  • Reinforced concrete bridge columns with relatively small aspect ratio show flexure-shear behavior, which is flexural behavior at initial and medium displacement stages and shear failure at final stage. Since the columns with flexure-shear failure have lower ductility than those with flexural failure, shear capacity curve models shall be applied as well as flexural capacity curve in order to determine ultimate displacement for seismic design or performance evaluation. In this paper, a modified shear capacity curve model is proposed and compared with the other models such as the CALTRANS model, Aschheim et al.'s model, and Priestley et al.'s model. Four shear capacity curve models are applied to the 4 full scale circular bridge column test results and the accuracy of each model is discussed. It may not be fully adequate to drive a final decision from the application to the limited number of test results, however the proposed model provides the better prediction of failure mode and ultimate displacement than the other models for the selected column test results.

  • This paper has proposed a reinforcing method for damaged RC columns with SRF sheets and Aramid rods. In order to verify the effectiveness and performance, two original columns and two reinforced columns with SRF sheets and Aramid rods were developed and tested under lateral cyclic displacement and a constant axial load. The test showed that the improvement of energy dissipation capacity was increased in terms of strength and ductility. In addition, an analytical modeling of the standard specimens was proposed using Response-2000 and ZeusNL program. The results of analytical and experimental studies for two standard columns were compared in terms of loading-displacement curve and energy dissipation capacity based on the nonlinear static analysis.

  • In this study, the displacement dependence, strength, and energy dissipation capacity of the steel rod damper were evaluated. The test variables are the number of steel rod dampers and the lateral deformation prevention details. From test results, it was evaluated that the displacement dependence conditions in the structural design code were satisfied. The maximum strength and energy dissipation capacity increased linearly as the number of steel rod increased. In addition, the maximum strength and energy dissipation capacity were evaluated by more than 20 times increased by using of the lateral deformation prevention details.

  • The lateral displacement or drift may be the cause of the damage in the reinforced concrete (RC) columns under the seismic load. In many regulations, lateral displacement was limited according to the properties of columns. The design displacement limits may be represented indirectly through the material strain limits and the mechanical properties of columns. EUROCODE-8 and FEMA356 calculate displacement limits by taking into account the mechanical properties of columns. However, Turkey Building Earthquake Code (TBEC) determine displacement limits by taking into account the material strain limits. The aim of this study is to assess the seismic design codes for RC columns through an experimental study. The estimates of seismic design codes have been compared with the experimental results. It is observed that the lateral displacement capacities of columns estimated according to some seismic codes are not in agreement with the experimental results. Also, it is observed that TBEC is conservative in the context of the performance indicator of RC columns, compared to EUROCODE-8 and FEMA356. Moreover, in this study, plastic hinge length and effective stiffness of test elements were investigated.

  • This study performed experimental validation of the hysteretic steel slit damper's basic and dependent characteristics, which should be considered for the design. The basic characteristic of the steel slit damper is used for determining design properties of non-linear analysis, such as yielding strength, yielding displacement, elastic stiffness and post-yielding stiffness. In order to evaluate dependent characteristics of the hysteretic steel slit damper, repeated deformation capacity with respect to the displacement, velocity and aspect ratio of the damper was evaluated. In this study, steel slit damper, which is widely used in Korea, was considered. The slit dampers with 55kN and 240kN of yielding strength were produced and tested. It was concluded that the slit damper's hysteresis behavior was affected by the dependent characteristics: displacement, velocity and aspect ratio. In other words, the steel slit damper's behavior was stable within limit displacement, and aspect ratio of the strut affected repeated deformation capacity of the damper subjected to large deformation. In addition, it was observed that the repeated deformation capacity abruptly decreased at the high speed range (${\geq}60mm/sec$). Furthermore, the experimental results were evaluated with the criterion of the damping device specified in ASCE7-10.

  • In this study, the displacement dependence, strength, and energy dissipation capacity of the steel rod damper were evaluated. The test variables were cross-sectional shape and aspect ratio. The 6th test specimens were made for performance test. From the test results, it was evaluated that the displacement dependence conditions of design code were satisfied in all specimens. And the strength effect according to the cross-sectional shape was minimal. As a result, the strength and energy dissipation capacity of the aspect ratio of 13.7 were evaluated as excellent.

  • The flexural ductility capacity of reinforced concrete columns can be expressed either in terms of curvature ductility or displacement ductility. To evaluate ductility capacity of reinforced concrete columns, analytical models and a non-linear analysis program, NARCC have been developed, which is applicable to the RC columns subjected to seismic loading. The analytical results by using computer program NARCC are in good agreement with the test results. In order to develop relationships between the curvature ductility and the displacement ductility, the analysis for total 21,600 RC circular columns using the computer program NARCC have been carried out for parametric studies. Based on the results from the parametric studies, a correlation equation between the curvature ductility and the displacement ductility was developed.
