  • A simple dispersion measurement technique has been demonstrated by using a self-seeding laser oscillation of a Fabry-Perot laser through a closed loop. The optical pulses of different wavelengths emitted from the Fabry-Perot laser travel down an optical fiber and the group velocity difference between the pulses due to the chromatic dispersion of the optical fiber is measured through the self-seeding laser oscillation process. The dispersion parameter of the optical fiber is calculated from the measured group velocity difference. The performance of the proposed technique has been confirmed experimentally and the accuracy of dispersion parameter measurement was comparable to that of commercial instruments with expensive equipment and components. The repeatability of the proposed method was better than 0.5%.

  • Non-destructive measurement of zero-dispersion wavelength variation in a dispersion shifted fiber by four-wave mixing technique is carried out. The oscillatory behavior of the four-wave mixing efficiency is utilized for the measurement of the linear dispersion slope and zero-dispersion wavelength. A simple formula useful for engineering estimation of the characteristics of fiber four-wave mixing efficiency is presented.

  • The analytical solutions of the Fraunhofer Diffraction(FD) theory and the principle for measurement of the dispersion relation of plasma wave is presented. Especially, the method for measurement of low-frequency wave is discussed. The wavenumbers of the density fluctuations are obtained from the curve fitting between the expremental FD profile and theoretical one for each frequency component. In measurement of the wavenumber of the low -frequency region, the information of the wavenumber is easily obtained from the ratio of the intensity at = 0 to the intensity at =0.5. The millimeter wave FD apparatus was designed to measure low-frequency density fluctuations. The determined wavenumbers are in the range of =0.1~ 1.0cm. Thus, the millimeter wave FD method was shown to be useful for the measurement of low-frequency density fluctuations, which are impossible to be measured by using a convention. Thomson scattering. The obtained dispersion relations will be useful information for plasma waves.

  • We present a novel chromatic dispersion measurement method using a spectral domain interferometer for single mode optical fiber over a wide spectral range (200 nm). This technique is based on the Mach-Zehnder interferometer using a white light source and spectrometer. A phase was directly retrieved from a measured spectral interferogram to obtain relative group velocity, chromatic dispersion and dispersion slope. The measured results with the proposed method were compared with those obtained using a conventional measurement method. Those results have good agreement with each other. Our proposed method can simply, accurately, and quickly (< 500 ms) measure chromatic information for a short length of optical fiber as well as optical device.

  • In this study, we investigated the dispersion characteristics of guided waves in thin films. Dispersion curves are essential for understanding not only the behavior of ultrasonic waves, but also the mechanical properties of thin films. Matrix techniques are presented for modeling ultrasonic waves in multilayered structures before being used to calculate the dispersion curves for Al-steel and Al-composite specimens. When compared with the dispersion curves obtained using the commercial program (Disperse), the dispersion curves generated from the transfer matrix method show its validity. These developed methods are used to obtain dispersion curves for Al thin films deposited on a Si substrate. The resulting dispersion curves enable observation of both dispersive and non-dispersive behavior for the guided waves, depending on the thickness of the thin films.

  • The good dispersion of nano-materials in epoxy matrix was important parameter for the reinforcement effect, and the evaluation of dispersion degree was to prove it. This work was studied to predict the dispersion condition of nano-SiC powders in SiC/epoxy composites using capacitance measurement. Capacitance was defined to be the electric capacity in proportional to electron charge of the measuring section. In case of nano-SiC powders, the electron charge of SiC/epoxy composites was higher than that of neat epoxy resin. Capacitance was evaluated for each section of SiC/epoxy composites. The prediction of dispersion condition was verified by using capacitance measurement. Dispersion condition of nano-SiC powders in epoxy matrix was evaluated with two different dispersion methods, i.e., sonication and stirring methods. The dispersion degree was also verified with the tensile strength correlating to capacitance.

  • There should be no problem in the measurement system for scientific quality management. In this paper, we want to correctly identify the factors that can affect the measurement results during the measurement process and identify what causes them when the measurement results cause problems in terms of location and variation. Variations in the measurement system are largely described in terms of location and dispersion. Location-related attributes are accuracy, stability, and linearity while dispersion-related attributes are reproducibility and repeatability. Analyzing the factors associated with dispersion is an R&R analysis, in which the size of repeatability and reproducibility is represented by a range of differences between multiple measurements and a range of differences between measurements, and 99% of dispersion is determined. Experimental design can also be used for measurement system analysis. Proper analysis is performed only when the factors causing the fluctuation, the worker and the product, are correctly identified as random or fixed factors.

  • This paper presents the experimental results of a study undertaken to develop an electrostatic spray system for a combustion application. The characteristics of the liquid atomization and the droplet dispersion in the electrostatic spray of twin fluids were investigated by the optical measurement techniques. The processes associated with the break-up of charged jets were also observed using the laser sheet visualization. The diameter and velocity of droplets were simultaneously measured using the phase Doppler measurement technique. The electrostatic atomization of the liquid fuel depended primarily on the charging voltage and the flow rate, but the dispersion of droplets depended significantly on the aerodynamic flow. Aerodynamic influences on the liquid atomization decreased with an increase of the charging voltage. Consequently, the liquid atomization and the droplet dispersion could be independently controlled using the electrostatic and aerodynamic mechanisms.

  • In this paper, usefulness of marine radar for water waves measurement in coastal waters is presented. We installed a marine radar to acquire radar images of water wave around light beacon at Jujeon in Ulsan. Also, a series of analysis procedures for obtaining the wave information from the acquired image is described with a schematic diagram. We compared analysis results of radar images with measurement values using wave height gauge at light beacon. In order to improve accuracy of analysis results, detailed water depth information is essential. In conclusion, in case of the use of radar for water waves measurement, it is shown that it is very necessary to increase the accuracy of measurement by consideration of the water depth in the dispersion relation of water waves.

  • A fine carbon fibers dispersion model is implemented to calculate the scattering range and ground level concentration of carbon fibers emitted at certain altitudes of atmospheric boundary layer. This carbon fibers dispersion model was composed by coupling a commonly used atmospheric dispersion model and an atmospheric boundary layer model. The atmospheric boundary layer model, applying the Monin-Obukov Similarity Rule obtained from measurement input data at ground level, was used to create the atmospheric boundary layer structure. In the atmospheric dispersion model, the Lagrangian Particle Model and the Markov Process were applied to calculate the trajectory of scattered carbon fibers relative to gravity and aerodynamic force, as well as carbon fibers specification.
