It had been disputed how to apply wall drag to the dispersed phase in the framework of the conventional two-fluid model for two-phase flows. Recently, Kim et al. [1] introduced the volume-averaged momentum equation based on the equation of a solid/fluid particle motion. They showed theoretically that for dispersed two-phase flows, the overall two-phase pressure drop by wall friction must be apportioned to each phase, in proportion to each phase fraction. In this study, the validity of the proposed wall drag model is demonstrated though one-dimensional (1D) simulations. In addition, it is shown that the existing form loss model incorrectly predicts the motion of the dispersed phase. A new form loss model is proposed to overcome that problem. The newly proposed form loss model is tested in the region covering the lower plenum and the core in a nuclear power plant. As a result, it is shown that the new models can correctly predict the relative velocity of the dispersed phase to the surrounding fluid velocity in the core with spacer grids.
The corrosion resistance of super duplex stainless steel on both its fibrous and dispersed phase was investigated. These structures consist of various volume fraction and distribution of austenite structure, which were obtained by changing the heat treatment temperature and cycle. The fibrous phase had higher austenite volume fraction than that of the dispersed phase at the same temperature. Corrosion resistance of super duplex stainless steel was evaluated through an immersion test and an impingement test, using 35% HCI and sea water, respectively. Super duplex stainless steel was compared with STS316L and STS304. The corrosion resistance of super duplex stainless steel was superior to ST316L and STS304. The dispersed phase of super duplex stainless steel was more stabilized than the fibrous phase in corrosion. The magnitude of corrosion rate was in order STS304, STS316L, fibrous phase of super duplex stainless steel and dispersed phase of super duplex stainless steel.

Heterophase polymer system has been attractive for a potential applicability to gas separation membrane material. It has been known that there is a trade-off between gas permeability and its selectivity in common polymers. Therefore, the heterophase polymer can be an alternative for a gas separation membrane material because its transport properties can be readily controlled by blending of two different polymers. The transport properties of immiscible polymer blends strongly depend upon the intrinsic transport properties of corresponding polymers. Another important factor to determine the transport properties is their morphology: volume fraction, size and shape of dispersed phase. Although the effect of the volume fraction of the dispersed phase on the transport properties has been widely investigated, the size and shape effects have been paid attention very much. In an immiscible polymer blend of two polymers, its morphology is primarily controlled by its volume fraction of dispersed phase. Therefore, the effect of the size of the dispersed phase can be hardly seen. Therefore, a block copolymer has been commonly employed to control their morphology when each block is miscible with one or the other phase. In this work, gas transport properties will be measured by varying the morphology of the heterophase polymer membrane. The transport properties will be interpreted in terms of their morphology. The effect of the volume fraction of the PI phase and, in particular, its size effect will be investigated experimentally and theoretically.
The morphology of silk fibroin/poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA)blend films was investigated using optical microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy. The effects of blend ratio and molecular weight of silk fibroin and PVA on phase separation were studied. Macro-phase separation occurred for the silk fibroin-rich/poor region whereas micro-phase separation took place for the dispersed/continuous phase, In spite of differences in molecular weight and blend ratio, it is observed that the dispersed phase and continuous one are composed of silk fibroin and PVA component, respectively. As the molecular weight of silk fibroin and silk fibroin content in blend ratio are decreased, the compatibility of blend is increased due to the reduction of micro-phase separation.
Understanding the phenomena of formation of single drops is necessary to understand the hydrodynamics in solvent extraction equipment which are used for separation of nuclear materials. In this work, the phenomena of aqueous phase and organic phase drop formation at submerged nozzles are compared by conducting experiments with 30%TBP (v/v) in dodecane as the organic phase and nitric acid as the aqueous phase. Two different nozzles and three different nitric acid concentrations are used. For each nozzle and nitric acid concentration, velocity of the dispersed phase is varied. Drops of aqueous phase formed at downward oriented nozzles submerged in organic phase are observed to be smaller than the drops of organic phase formed at upward oriented nozzles submerged in aqueous phase. Correlations to estimate drop diameter are proposed.

Prediction performances by Einstein's equation of diffusivity, Peskin's model, Three-Equation model, Four-Equation model and Algebraic Stress Model, have been compared by analyzing twophase (air-solid) turbulent jet flow. Turbulent kinetic energy equation of dispersed phase was solved to investigate effects of turbulent kinetic energy on turbulent diffusivity. Turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate of particles has been considered by solving turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate equation of dispersed phase and applying it to turbulent diffusivity of dispersed phase. Results show that turbulent diffusivity of dispersed phase can be expressed by turbulent kinetic energy ratio between phases and prediction of turbulent kinetic energy was improved by considering turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate of dispersed phase for modelling turbulent diffusivity. This investigation also show that Algebraic Stress Model is the most promising method in analyzing gas-solid two phases turbulent flow.

Our study have aimed to identify the deformation and breakup mechanism of minor phase in polymer blends under uniaxial enlongational flow. Experimentally, we measured the transient elongational viscosity of PS/HDPE blends using the uniaxial elongational rheometer at two temperatures. And we observed the evolution of blend morphology with elongation time. Morphological change was observed by quenching the specimen after deformation. If the viscosity variation of PS was compared with that of HDPE at each temperature, PS showed larger temperature dependence than HDPE. At 155$^{\circ}C$, the dispersed phase of larger size were easily affected by affine deformation. The initial spherical shape changed to flat ellipsoid at first, then flat ellipsoid to bulbous shape, and bulbous to thin thread and its satellites. But dispersed phase of smaller size showed the change from sphere to ellipsoid. At 175$^{\circ}C$, the dispersed phase were mostly deformed from spherical shape to ellipsoid. As a result, the morphological change of dispersed phase in elongational deformation is affected by chain flexibility and viscosity ratio. We need to further study to make sure the mechanism of elongation of viscoelastic polymer blends.
This paper introduces the physical phenomena involved in Direct Contact Heat Exchangers (DCHXs) and also investigates the possibility of applying of EIT(Electrical Impedance Tomography) technique for capturing the images of dispersed phases as they stream through a stagnant body of water. A number of cases are studied where two dimensional cross-sectional static images are given for fictitious and actual masses present in a column of water(saline solution). In most direct contact liquid-liquid heat exchangers, oil or hydrocarbon with a density different(lighter or heavier) from water is normally used as dispersed working fluid. The main difficulty that arises with this arrangement lies in the elucidation of complicated flow field where the dispersed phase fluid tends to change its shape and size constantly during its journey through the other phase(water). This paper presents a number of results with different types of dispersed phases that are immiscible with water. The EIT technique has been employed in this context to test its applicability in capturing the dynamic images of dispersed phases. It shows static images of dispersed phases where dynamic images could be obtained by simply extending the algorithms and strategies employed in the present analysis.
We prepared spherical silica particles by controlling various conditions of emulsion-gel procedure using a lab-scale membrane emulsification system equipped with SPG (Shirasu porous glass) membrane having pore size of 2.6 ${\mu}m$. We determined the effects of process parameters of membrane emulsification (dispersed phase pressure, stabilizer and emulsifier concentration in continuous phase, $H_2O$/TEOS ratio, ratio of dispersed phase to continuous phase) on the mean size and size distribution of silica particles. The increase of the dispersed phase pressure and ratio of dispersed phase to continuous phase led to the increase in the mean size of silica particles. On the contrary, the increase in stabilizer and emulsifier concentration and $H_2O$/TEOS ratio caused the reduction of the mean size of particles. Through controlling these parameters, monodisperse spherical silica particles with about 3 ${\mu}m$ of the mean size were finally prepared.
