  • This paper introduces the concept of warped discrete cosine transform (WDCT) and an image compression algorithm based on the WDCT. The proposed WDCT is a cascade connection of a conventional DCT and all-pass filters whose parameters can be adjusted to provide frequency warping. In the proposed image compression scheme, the frequency response of the all-pass filter is controlled by a set of parameters with each parameter for a specified frequency range. For each image block, the best parameter is chosen from the set and is sent to the decoder as a side information along with the result of corresponding WDCT computation. For actual implementation, the combination of the all-pass IIR filters and the DCT can be viewed as a cascade of a warping matrix and the DCT matrix, or as a filter bank which is obtained by warping the frequency response of the DCT filter bank. Hence, the WDCT can be implemented by a single matrix computation like the DCT. The WDCT based compression, outperforms the DCT based compression, for high bit rate applications and for images with high frequency components.

  • The conventional fractal image compression based on discrete wavelet transform uses the fixed block size in fractal coding and reduces PSNR at low bit rate. This paper proposes a fractal image coding based on discrete wavelet transform which improves PSNR by using variable block size in fractal coding. In the proposed method. the absolute values of discrete wavelet transform coefficients are computed. and the discrete wavelet transform coefficients of different highpass subbands corresponding to the same spatial block are assembled. and the fractal code for the range block of each range block level is assigned. and then a decision tree C. the set of choices among fractal coding. "0" encoding. and scalar quantization is generated and a set of scalar quantizers q is chosen. And then the wavelet coefficients. fractal codes. and the choice items in the decision tree are entropy coded by using an adaptive arithmetic coder. This proposed method improved PSNR at low bit rate and could achieve a blockless reconstructed image. As the results of experiment. the proposed method obtained better PSNR and higher compression ratio than the conventional fractal coding method and wavelet transform coding.rm coding.

  • Groundwater flow in fractured rock masses is controlled by combined effects of fracture networks, state of geostafic stresses and crossflow between fractures and rock matrix. Furthermore the scaie dependent, anisotropic properties of hydraulic parameters results mainly from irregular paftems of fracture system, which can not be evaluated properly with the methods available at present. The basic assumpfion of discrete fracture network model is that groundwater flows only along discrete fractures and the flow paths in rock mass are determined by geometric paftems of interconnected fractures. The characteristics of fracture distribution in space and fracture hydraulic parameters are represented as the probability density functions by stochastic simulation. The discrete fracture network modelling was aftempted to characterize the groundwater flow in the vicinity of existing large cavems located in Wonjeong-ri, Poseung-myon, Pyeungtaek-kun. The fracture data of $1\textrm{km}^2$ area were analysed. The result indicates that the fracture sets evaluated from an equal area projection can be grouped into 6 sets and the fracture sizes are distributed in longnormal. The conductive fracture density of set 1 shows the highest density of 0.37. The groundwater inflow into a carvem was calculated as 29ton/day with the fracture transmissivity of $10^{-8}\textrm{m}^2/s$. When the fracture transmissivity increases in an order, the inflow amount estimated increases dramatically as much as fold, i.e 651 ton/day. One of the great advantages of this model is a forward modelling which can provide a thinking tool for site characterization and allow to handle the quantitative data as well as qualitative data.

  • A direct discrete formulation suitable for the nonlinear analysis of masonry structures is presented. The numerical approach requires a pair of dual meshes, one for describing displacement fields, one for imposing equilibrium. Forces and displacements are directly used (instead of having to resort to a model derived from a set of differential equations). Associated and nonassociated flow laws are dealt with within a complementarity framework. The main features of the method and of the relevant computer code are discussed. Numerical examples are presented, showing that the numerical approach is able to describe plastic strains, damage effects and crack patterns in masonry structures.

  • In this study, the optimization program is developed to provide preliminary designs of steel-box girder bridges with minimum cost. The advantages of steel-box girder deck, when comparing with other girder types, are higher torsional rigidity and better resistance against corrosion. To achieve more rational design, systematic design procedure is required, by which the design constraints on steel-box girder are satisfied and the design variables with minimum cost are obtained. In the Proposed optmum design Process, the design variables are forced to be selected from the available discrete value set. The efficiency of the developed program has been verified by companing with previous designed sections and the resulting optimum cost with discrete variables has been compared with those of continuous variables.

  • In this paper we describe Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) using Petri nets, since Petri nets provide a powerful tool for modeling dynamical behavior of discrete concurrent processes. We deal with off-Line and on-Line rule-based scheduling of FMS. The role of the rule-base is to generate appropriate priority rule for resolving conflicts, that is, for selecting one of enabled transitions to be fired in a conflict set of the Petri nets. This corresponds to select a part type to be processed in the FMS. Towards developing more Intelligent Manufacturing Systems (IMS) we propose a conceptual framework of a futuristic intelligent scheduling system.

  • A DEDS is a system whose stated change in response to the occurrence of events from a predefined event set. A major difficulty in developing analytical results for the system is the lack of appropriate modeling techniques. In this paper, we consider the modeling and control problem for Discrete Event Dynamic Systems(DEDS) in the Temporal Logic framework(TLF) which have been recently defined. The traditional TLF is enhanced with time functions for real time control of Discrete Event Dynamic Systems. A sequence of event which drive the system from a given initial state to a given final state is generated by pertinently operating the given plants. This paper proposes the use of Real-time Temporal Logic as a modeling tool for the analysis and control of DEDS. An given example of fixed-time traffic control problem is shown to illustrate our results with Real-time Temporal Logic Framework.

  • In spite of rapidly increasing interests in digital manufacturing, there still lacks of a systematic approach in manufacturing line flow analysis via modeling and simulation; currently, the parameters for designing manufacturing line are defined by being solely based on engineers experiences. The paper proposes an application of the genetic algorithm to a discrete event line simulation finding optimal set of parameters for manufacturing line balancing problem. The proposed method has been applied to two example problems-one is a simple manufacturing model and the other for shipyard industry-in order to demonstrate its validity and usefulness.

  • The failure mechanism and maximum collapse load of masonry structures may change significantly under static and dynamic excitations depending on their internal arrangement and material properties. Hence, it is important to understand correctly the nonlinear behavior of masonry structures in order to adequately assess their safety and propose efficient strengthening measures, especially for historical constructions. The discrete element method (DEM) can play an important role in these studies. This paper discusses possible collapse mechanisms and provides a set of parametric analyses by considering the influence of material properties and cross section morphologies on the out of plane strength of masonry walls. Detailed modeling of masonry structures may affect their mechanical strength and displacement capacity. In particular, the structural behavior of stacked and rubble masonry walls, portal frames, simple combinations of masonry piers and arches, and a real structure is discussed using DEM. It is further demonstrated that this structural analysis tool allows obtaining excellent results in the description of the nonlinear behavior of masonry structures.

  • Revenue management problems originated in the 1970's in the context of the airline industry have been successfully introduced in airline industries. It has started on the capacity control by booking classes for available seats, and has been recognized as a powerful tool to maximize the total revenue. Changing customer behavior and airline market environments, however, has required a new mechanism for improving the revenue. Dynamic pricing is one of innovative tools which is to adjust prices according to the market status. In this paper, we consider a dynamic pricing and seat control problem for discrete time horizon. The problem can be modeled as a stochastic programming problem. Applying the linear approximation technique and given the price set for each time, we suggest a mixed Integer Programming model to solve our problem efficiently. From the simulation results, we can find our model makes good performance and can be expanded to other comprehensive problems.
