War-games using C4I systems have been used to improve the command ability of commanders and the fighting power of combat forces. During a war-game simulation, a commander makes a plan for the movement of a combat force and issues orders to the combat force according to the plan. If it is possible to minimize damages from the artillery of enemy forces and take the advantage position where is effective for attack/defense, we can hold a dominant position of the battlefield. Therefore, this papers proposes a genetic algorithm-based optimal path searching method. The proposed method creates an optimal path of a combat force by taking into consideration dangerous conditions of the battlefield in which the combat force is. This paper also shows the process of creating an optimal path by using a discrete event specification modeling and simulation method.

Floor inertial forces are transferred to lateral force resisting systems through a diaphragm action during earthquakes. The diaphragm action requires floor slabs to carry in-plane forces. In precast concrete diaphragms, these forces must be carried across the joints between precast floor units as they represent planes of weakness. Therefore, diaphragm reinforcement with sufficient strength and deformability is necessary to ensure the diaphragm action for the floor inertial force transfer. In a shake table test for a three-story precast concrete structure, an unexpected local failure in the diaphragm flexural reinforcement occurred. This failure caused loss of the diaphragm action but did not trigger collapse of the structure due to a possible alternative path for the floor inertial force transfer. This paper investigates this failure event and its impact on structural seismic responses based on the shake table test and simulation results. The simulations were conducted on a structural model with discrete diaphragm elements. The structural model was also validated from the test results. The investigation indicates that additional floor inertial force will be transferred into the gravity columns after loss of the diaphragm action which can further result in the increase of seismic demands in the gravity column and diaphragms in adjacent floors.

This paper deals with the design and implementation of an interface for interoperation between DiskSim, a well-known disk simulator, and a system-level simulator based on DEVSim++. Such inter-operational simulation aims at evaluation of an overall performance of storage systems which consist of multiple computer nodes with a variety of I/O level specifications. A well-known system-level simulation framework, DEVSim++ environment is based on the DEVS formalism, which provides a sound semantics of modular and hierarchical modeling methodology at the discrete event systems level such as multi-node computer systems. For maintainability we assume that there is no change of the source codes for two heterogeneous simulation engines. Thus, we adopt a notion of simulators interoperation in which there should be a means to synchronize simulation times as well as to exchange messages between simulators. As an interface for such interoperation DiskSimManager is designed and implemented. Various experiments, comparing the results of the standalone DiskSim simulation and the interoperation simulation using the proposed interface of DiskSimManager, proved that DiskSimManager works correctly as an interface for interoperation between DEVSim++ and DiskSim.
Simulation based Battle Experimentation is to examine the readiness for a battle using simulation technology. It heavily relies on the weapon systems modeling and simulation. To analyze the characteristics and complexity of the weapon systems in the experiment, the modeling & simulation environment has to be able to break down the system of systems into components and make the use of high fidelity components such as real hardware in simulation. In that sense, the modular and hierarchical structure of DEVS (Discrete EVent System Specification) framework provides potentials to meet the requirements of the battle experimentation environment. This paper describes the development of the DEVS integrated development environment for Simulation based Battle Experimentation. With the design principles of easy, flexible, and fast battle simulation, the newly developed battle experimentation tool mainly consists of 3 parts - model based graphical design tool for making DEVS models and linking them with external simulators easily through diagrams, the experiment plan tool for speeding up a statistic analysis, the standard components model libraries for lego-like building up a weapon system. This noble simulation environment is to provide a means to analyze complex simulation based experiments with different levels of models mixed in a simpler and more efficient way.

Abroad warships are confronted with various menaces. The most critical threat of the warship is an Anti-Ship Missile (ASM). The ASM is able to be launched at a variety of environments and platforms. The ASM can evades conventional naval radar systems and electronic countermeasure techniques for providing a fatal damage to the warship. To cope with the ASM, an active decoy is an effective method to minimize the direct damage to the warship. The active decoy increases survivability of the warship because the ASM can lure pursuit of the active decoy instead of the warship. In this paper, our proposed method verifies an available response time of the active decoy to deal with the ASM using the active decoy of the warship in marine environments. We defined models of the warship, the ASM, and the active decoy, and executed simulation by combining the models. By the simulation result, the proposed method demonstrated the superiority of the mobile active decoy of the response time decoy among various active decoys, and estimated a protection area to prevent the ASM according the response time of the mobile active decoy against the ASM.

Sensor network, that is an infrastructure of ubiquitous computing, consists of a number of sensor nodes of which hardware is very small. The network topology and routing scheme of the network should be determined according to its purpose, and its hardware and software may have to be changed as needed from time to time. Thus, the sensor network simulator being capable of verifying its behavior and estimating performance is required for better design. Sensor network simulators currently existing have been developed for specific hardwares or operating systems, so that they can only be used for such systems and do not provide any means to estimate the amount of power consumption and program execution time which are major issues for system design. In this study, we develop the sensor network simulator that can be used to design and verify various sensor networks without regarding to types of applications or operating systems, and also has the capability of predicting the amount of power consumption and program execution time. For this purpose, the simulator is developed by using machine instruction-level discrete-event simulation scheme. As a result, the simulator can be used to analyze program execution timings and related system behaviors in the actual sensor nodes in detail. Instruction traces used as workload for simulations are executable images produced by the cross-compiler for ATmega128L microcontroller.

Simulation validation techniques which have been employed in most studies are statistical analysis, which validate a model with mean or variance of throughput and resource utilization as an evaluation object. However, these methods have not been able to ensure the reliability of individual elements of the model well. To overcome the problem, the weighted F-measure method was proposed, but this technique also had some limitations. First, it is difficult to apply the technique to complex system environment with numerous values of interarrival time because it assigns a class to an individual value of interarrival time. In addition, due to unbounded weights, the value of weighted F-measure has no lower bound, so it is difficult to determine its threshold. Therefore, this paper propose weighted F-measure technique with cluster analysis to solve these problems. The classes for the technique are defined by each cluster, which reduces considerable number of classes and enables to apply the technique to various systems. Moreover, we improved the validation technique in the way of assigning minimum bounded weights without any lack of objectivity.
Recently the CGF/SAF (Computer Generated Force / Semi-Automated Force) technology has been getting attention to deal with the increasing complexity in a DM&S(Defence Modeling and Simulation) environment. OneSAF is one of well-known CGF/SAF systems, however, it is not able to support the DEVS framework which is an advanced discrete event based modeling and simulation environment. Especially, most DM&S systems in Korea has been developed on the basis of the DEVS framework. In this paper, we have proposed the agent-based SAF design methodology and tool for supporting DEVS M&S environment. The proposed SAF modeling tool is divided into two parts; the agent modeling part and SAF modeling part. In the agent modeling environment, the modeler can simply create the agent model by writing down the necessary rules. It also provides the agent testing environment so that the modeler maybe conveniently verify the prescribed agent model. The SAF model is finally created by combing the individual agents based on the pre-defined structure. DM&S engineers will be able to employ our tools and modeling methodology to design the DEVS-based DM&S system to be developed.
Software simulation has been widely used for the design and application development of a large-scale wireless sensor network. The degree of details of the simulation must be high to verify the behavior of the network and to estimate its execution time and power consumption of an application program as accurately as possible. But, as the degree of details becomes higher, the simulation time increases. Moreover, as the number of sensor nodes increases, the time tends to be extremely long. We propose an optimal-synchronous parallel discrete-event simulation method to shorten the time in a large-scale sensor network simulation. In this method, sensor nodes are partitioned into subsets, and each PC that is interconnected with others through a network is in charge of simulating one of the subsets. Results of experiments using the parallel simulator developed in this study show that, in the case of the large number of sensor nodes, the speedup tends to approach the square of the number of PCs participating in the simulation. In such a case, the ratio of the overhead due to parallel simulation to the total simulation time is so small that it can be ignored. Therefore, as long as PCs are available, the number of sensor nodes to be simulated is not limited. In addition, our parallel simulation environment can be constructed easily at the low cost because PCs interconnected through LAN are used without change.
