  • In a 2-dimensional (2D) Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) hardware, a significant fraction of the total hardware area is contributed by the combinational logic used to perform 1-dimensional (2D) transform. The size of the non-combinational logic i.e. the transpose memory is dictated by the size of the largest transform supported. Hence, the optimization of hardware area is performed mainly for 1D-transform combinational logic. This paper demonstrates the use of Multiple Constant Multiplication (MCM) algorithm to reduce the combinational logic area. Partial optimizations are also described for the cases where the direct use of MCM algorithm doesn't meet the timing constraint. Experimental results show that 46% improvement in gate count is achieved for 32 point 1D DCT transform logic after using MCM optimization.

  • The ability to navigate autonomously in off-road terrain is the most critical technology needed for Unmanned Ground Vehicles(UGV). In this paper, we present a method for vision-based terrain cover classification using DCT features. To classify the terrain, we acquire image from a CCD sensor, then the image is divided into fixed size of blocks. And each block transformed into DCT image then extracts features which reflect frequency band characteristics. Neural network classifier is used to classify the features. The proposed method is validated and verified through many experiments and we compare it with wavelet feature based method. The results show that the proposed method is more efficiently classify the terrain-cover than wavelet feature based one.

  • Defects positioning of underground gas pipelines using MFL(magnetic flux leakage) inspection which is one of non-destructive evaluation techniques is proposed in this paper. MFL signals acquired from MFL PIG(pipeline inspection gauge) have nonlinearity and distortion caused by various external disturbances. SQI(self quotient image), a compensation technique for nonlinearity and distortion of MFL signal, is used to correct positioning of pipeline defects. Through the experiments using artificial defects carved in the KOGAS pipeline simulation facility, it is found that the performance of proposed defect detection is greatly improved compared to that of the conventional DCT(discrete cosine transform) coefficients based detection.

특히 MPEG(Moving Picture Expert Group) 등 압축방식의 표준화기구에서는 DCT를 주축으로 연구가 행해지고 있다.

  • The discrete cosine transform (DCT)-based progressive and hierarchical coding schemes developed by the International Standardization Organization (ISO) Joint Photographic Experts Groups (JPEG) are implemented and evaluated for the application of medical image communication. For a series of head sections of magnetic resonance images, a compression ratio of about 10 is obtained by the algorithm without noticeable image degradation.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel feature extraction method for face recognition, based on Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), Energy Probability (EP), and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA). We define an energy probability as magnitude of effective information and it is used to create a frequency mask in OCT domain. The feature extraction method consists of three steps; i) the spatial domain of face images is transformed into the frequency domain called OCT domain; ii) energy property is applied on DCT domain that acquire from face image for the purpose of dimension reduction of data and optimization of valid information; iii) in order to obtain the most significant and invariant feature of face images, LDA is applied to the data extracted using frequency mask. In experiments, the recognition rate is 96.8% in ETRI database and 100% in ORL database. The proposed method has been shown improvements on the dimension reduction of feature space and the face recognition over the previously proposed methods.

  • In this paper, we proposed robust blind watermarking algorithm using texture block coefficient based on discrete cosine transform(DCT). The proposed method embedded all of watermark signals into DC component of $8\times8$ block DCT in order to robust various external attack The texture block coefficient was composed absolute value of DCT coefficients. Experiment showed that the proposed method better than conventional methods in the invisibility and various attack such as dithering, cropping, and scaling.

  • In this paper, we propose a method for calculation of the length of watermarks to be inserted in the discrete cosine transform (DCT) domain for the specified peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) of still image. Using the energy relationship of the DCT we derive the equation that directly computes the length of watermarks to be inserted in the DCT domain. Experimental results with several test images show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • This study derived the inter-conversion matrices, which can be used in heterogeneous image transcoding between the compressed images using different transforms, such as the $8{\times}8$ block discrete cosine transform (BDCT) and the one-level discrete wavelet transform (DWT). Basically, to obtain the one-level DWT coefficients from $8{\times}8$ BDCT, inverse BDCT should be performed followed by forward DWT, and vice versa. On the other hand, if the proposed interconversion approach is used, only one inter-conversion matrix multiplication makes the corresponding transcoding possible. Both theoretical and experimental analyses showed that the amount of computation of the proposed approach decreases over 20% when the inter-conversion matrices are used under specific conditions.

  • The increasing demand for non-sinusoidal currents affects the quality of distribution networks. Harmonic detection is a crucial step in the cancellation of those components by active power filters. In this paper, the discrete cosine transform (DCT) is compared with different implementations based on Fourier transforms, demonstrating their equivalences and the advantages provided by the former. We demonstrate that the phase error in the presence of grid frequency deviations and the transient length are reduced by half in comparison to the discrete Fourier transform. A novel algorithm is developed to provide frequency adaptation to the DCT, taking advantage of its good features. The window width is adjusted in real time according to the actual value of the grid fundamental frequency by means of a phase-locked loop. A technique based on dithering is employed to overcome the limitation caused by the truncation of the window number of samples, so the frequency resolution is enhanced. The theoretical approach is verified by simulated and experimental results.
