  • This study investigated the differences between adolescents' own perceptions of their psychopathology and perceptions by clinically depressed parents of their adolescents' psychopathology. The study also examined parental characteristics that accounted for discrepancies between parents and adolescents. The clinical sample consisted of 61 adolescents and their parents who were diagnosed with a major depressive disorder. The adolescents and parents evaluated the adolescents' psychopathology in separate interviews with the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and the Youth Self-Report (YSR). Parents reported on current depressive symptoms and parenting practices using questionnaires. The results revealed that parent-adolescent discrepancies were greater in regard to affective and anxiety problems compared to oppositional defiant and conduct problems. Parental rejection was associated with differences in scores for affective problems after controlling for parents' current depressive symptoms and adolescents' age and gender. The findings highlight the importance of considering adolescents' affective and anxiety problems when treating depressed parents. Furthermore, the findings suggest that parental rejection may play a pivotal role when interpreting the discrepancy concerning adolescents' affective problems.

  • There have been a number of lesson analysis studies, yet not many studies address the issue of the perspective of students who play a key role in the lesson along with the teacher. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the teacher and the students interpret the mathematics lesson they experienced, and to find out the potential discrepancy between the teacher and the students in their perceptions of mathematics lesson. To pursue this purpose, 10 consecutive lessons were videotaped in the 8th grade mathematics classroom, and the video-stimulated post-lesson interviews were also conducted with the teacher and the students. Based on the lesson videos and the interview data, six discrepancies between the teacher and the students in their perceptions of mathematics lesson were dentified: the discrepancy between the teacher's intention and students' interest in the lesson; different interpretation and response to the teacher's mistake; formal abidance; topaze effect; different recognition of the students' preference among the topics; teacher's insufficient response to students' needs. These six discrepancies were further categorized and some implications were drawn.

  • This discovery-oriented study explored 31 social workers' perceptions of discrepancies between explicit and implicit rules in their work places that are supposed to affect the quality of social work services, and identified eight categories of dilemmas: (a) confused accountability or purpose, (b) ambiguous principle, (c) improper authority, (d) confused role of social workers, (e) conflict between ideal and reality, (f) confused work ethics, (g) confused boundary of workers' rights, and (h) binds. These eight categories revealed the real philosophy and purposes of social work agencies, work ethics and values prevalent among social work agencies, agencies' orientation toward clients, and the conditions of social support from the society in large. Instead of searching for discrete variables as separately responsible for inefficient social work services, this approach probed malfunctioning implicit rules in a holistic context to see if inefficient or ineffective provision of social work services is a logical response to a much larger and deeper nexus. Insight into discrepant rules does not solely ensure the improvement of social work practice in the field, particularly if their identification is simply used as another opportunity to blame and avoid self-responsibility. However, such discrepancies between implicit and explicit rules are real enough to the staff workers and agency administrators that they may want to begin the dialogue of contradictory rules as a way of sanctioning discussion of previously forbidden topics. This study provided the ground-work for the dialogue.

  • The purpose of this study was to promote emotional coaching communication and to contribute to the mental health of youth by investigating the perceptional discrepancy of emotional coaching between a mother and her child related to the maladjustment of adolescents. Two hundred junior high school students in the second and third grades and their 200 mothers living in Suncheon were purposefully sampled, and the data were analyzed using the program SPSSVIN 21. The results were as follows. First, the mothers' perception appeared to be higher than their children's in emotional coaching communications. Second, pairs of mothers and children were categorized into three types, depending on the degree of their emotional coaching communication. There were more pairs with discrepancies of perception of emotional coaching than pairs with corresponding perceptions. Third, the pairs with corresponding perceptions of emotional coaching showed fewer maladjustment problems. According to the mothers' descriptions, a sneering child appeared to have the worst effect with respect to maladjustment. From these results, it is suggested that education on emotional coaching for mothers should be developed and increased to prevent maladjustment problems of junior high school students.

  • Purpose: The current study investigated how clinical microbiology courses are conducted at the undergraduate nursing level in South Korea to identify the perceptions of clinical nurses regarding their knowledge and the clinical importance of microbiology and further assess their educational needs. Methods: Curricula presented on the websites of 202 undergraduate nursing institutions were reviewed. In addition, a survey assessing the knowledge and importance of clinical microbiology perceived by nurses was conducted online. A total of 150 nurses participated in the survey. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation coefficients, t-tests, analysis of variance, Borich Needs Assessment Model, and Locus for Focus Model. Results: The results indicated that 90% of undergraduate nursing institutions offer clinical microbiology courses under various subject names. The perceived knowledge and importance of clinical microbiology were correlated; however, knowledge was consistently lower than the perceived importance of clinical biology among nurses. The structure and proliferation of novel viruses ranked highest in the educational needs of nurses based on both the Borich Needs Assessment Model and Locus for Focus Model. Conclusion: Based on the findings, this study suggests educational opportunities for clinical microbiology in hospital settings to reduce discrepancies between knowledge and the importance of clinical microbiology faced by nurses.

  • There have been a growing number of studies that show huge discrepancies between individuals' perceptions of relative economic position and the economic position based on the reported income in the survey. If this is the case, it is expected that the impact of perceived income status on individual happiness can be different from that of objective income status based on the reported income. The aim of this study is to investigate the factors affecting the discrepancies between perception and reality with respect to relative income status, focusing on the 'Reference group theory'. This study also tries to extend existing knowledge of the relative status on the happiness level of individuals, by examining how individual's happiness can be changed by providing the accurate information about their objective income level. There are systematic biases in perceived income status. A majority of people who actually rank in the lower part of income ladder place themselves in higher positions, while a significant portion of rich individuals underestimate their actual income status. Secondly, the misperception about the income distribution is affected by a variety of individual, household characteristics and reference group income. Thirdly, providing individuals with accurate information has a considerable effect on their happiness level.

  • This study used data from a survey of adult Korean women in their twenties to learn their current practices for wearing and purchasing tight-fit jeans available on the market as well as perceptions regarding size measurements and satisfaction levels. We then determined product sizes and pattern measurements for the type of jeans worn. This study also analyzed discrepancies in product size measurements among brands to determine whether the measurements were generally suitable for average body shapes and measurements of women in their twenties. The study results were as follows. First, the survey asked women in their twenties about current practices in wearing jeans. Many respondents answered that their preferred fit is "a perfectly snug fit" and that the most common fit style of jeans was the skinny fit. Second, we selected a test pair of jeans with an identical fiber content from brands that women prefer to wear, according to the survey results. We researched the product measurements of the size respectively labeled 27 inches for each of the 8 brands' test jeans; consequently, the results showed that there were significant differences among the brands in the product measurements of each part of jeans. Third, we analyzed the pattern measurements of 8 selected brands for each area and identified pattern characteristics by brand.

  • Background: In the United States, the dairy product manufacturing industry has consistently had higher rates of work-related nonfatal injuries and illnesses compared to the national average for industries in all sectors. The selection and implementation of appropriate safety performance indicators are important aspect of reducing risk within safety management systems. This study examined the leading safety indicators implemented in the dairy product-manufacturing sector (NAICS 3115) and their perceived effectiveness in reducing work-related injuries. Methods: Perceptions were collected from individuals with safety responsibilities in the dairy product manufacturing facilities. OSHA Incident Rate (OIR) and Days away, restricted and transferred (DART) rates from 2013 to 2018 were analyzed. Results: The perceived most effective leading were safety observations, stop work authority, near miss reporting, safety audits, preventative maintenance, safety inspections, safety training attendance, and job hazard analysis/safety analysis, respectively. The 6-year trend analysis showed that those implementing all eight top indicators had a slightly lower rates than those that did not implement all eight. Production focused mentality, poor training, and lack of management commitment were perceived as the leading causes of injuries in this industry. Conclusion: Collecting leading indicators with the unique interest to meet the regulatory requirements and to document the management system without the actual goal of using them as input to improve the system most probably will not lead to an effective reduction of negative safety outcomes. For leading indicators to be effective, they should be properly selected, executed, periodically evaluated and actions are taken when necessary.
