The stationary discontinuous armatures that are used in permanent magnet linear synchronous motors (PM-LSMs) have been proposed as a driving source for transportation systems. However, the stationary discontinuous armature PM-LSM contains the outlet edges which always exist as a result of the discontinuous arrangement of the armature. For this reason, the high alteration of the outlet edge cogging force produced between the armature's core and the mover's permanent magnet when a mover passes the boundary between the armature's installation part and non-installation part has been indicated as a problem. Therefore, we have examined the outlet edge cogging force by installing the auxiliary teeth at the armature's outlet edge in order to minimize the outlet edge cogging force generated when the armature is arranged discontinuously. Moreover, we obtained the calculation by analyzing the shape of the auxiliary teeth in which the outlet edge cogging force is minimized the most.
Generally, the discontinuous armature permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (PM-LSM) is composed by the stator block (accelerator, re-accelerator, and decelerator) and the free running section. However, the stationary discontinuous armature design involves the velocity variation of the mover during drive when the armature's non-installation part changes over to installation part as a result of the outlet edge of the armature. Therefore, we considered deforming the shape of the outlet edge at the armature and apply skew on the permanent magnet by displacing the two magnet segments of each pole. This paper presents the results of a three-dimensional (3-D) numerical analysis with a finite element method (FEM) of the force exerted by the outlet edge.

A novel technique was proposed to calculate fluxes accurately by separation of flow area into a part of step face which is dominated by flow resistance of it and an upper part which is relatively less affected by the step face in analyzing shallow-water flows over discontinuous topography. This technique gives fairly good agreement with exact solutions, 3D simulations, and experimental results. It has been possible to directly analyze shallow-water flows over discontinuous topography by the technique developed in this study. It is expected to apply the developed technique to accurate evaluation of overflows over weirs or retaining walls (riverside roads) and areas flooded by the inundation in the city covered in discontinuous topography.
In order to analyze effectively the discontinuous parts such as holes or notches included in mechanical structures by the finite element method, a singular finite element for orthotropic materials. is proposed. This singular element is formulated by the Trefftz method and the hybrid variational principles, which the displacements and stresses are simultaneously assumed using the Trefftz functions. Through several numerical tests, it is shown that the proposed singular element is very efficient for the accurate stress analysis of the various types of discontinuous parts.

With the proliferation of smartphones and 5G networks, mobile social network service (SNS) has become an indispensable part of people's daily lives. However, with the use of SNS, fatigue and withdrawal behavior gradually emerged. Based on The Transactional Theory of Stress and Coping (TTSC), we explored the mechanism of SNS overload on users' discontinuous intention under the framework of "stressor-strain-outcome". And we also investigated the moderating effects of gender in this process. We hope that through our research, we can help SNS users to reduce unnecessary fatigue, and provide better suggestions for platform designers to adjust product design to improve user experience.

In this paper, a robust adaptive sliding mode control algorithm for accurate trajectory tracking of robot manipulators is proposed, with unknown parameters being estimated on-line. The controller is designed based on a Lyapunov method, which consists of adaptive feed-forward compensation part and a discontinuous control part. It is shown that, in the presence of the uncertainty and the disturbances arising from the actuator or some other causes, the tracking errors is bound to converge to zero asymptotically. An illustrative example is given to demonstrate the results of the propose method.

Three-dimensional finite-difference simulation of earthquake ground motion is performed using a locally variable time-step (LVTS) scheme matching with discontinuous grids. Discontinuous grids in three directions and extension of the discontinuous grids' boundary to the free-surface in the LVTS scheme minimize the cost of both the computational memory and the CPU time for models like the localized sedimentary basin. A simplified model of sedimentary basin is dealt to show the feasibility and efficiency of the LVTS scheme. The basin parameters are examined to understand the main characteristics on ground-motion response in the basin. The results show that the seismic energy is concentrated on a marginal area of the basin far from the source. This focusing effect is mainly due to the constructive interference of the direct S-wave with the basin-edge induced surface waves. The ground-motion amplification over the deepest part of the basin is relatively lower than that above the shallow basin edge. Therefore the ground-motion amplification may be more related to the source azimuth or the direction of the incident waves into the basin rather than the depth of it.
DDARF (Discontinuous Deformation Analysis for Rock Failure) is a numerical algorithm for simulating jointed rock masses' discontinuous deformation. While its reinforcement simulation is only limited to end-anchorage bolt, which is assumed to be a linear spring simply. Here, several new reinforcement modes in DDARF are proposed, including lining reinforcement, full-length anchorage bolt and equivalent reinforcement. In the numerical simulation, lining part is assigned higher mechanical strength than surrounding rock masses, it may include multiple virtual joints or not, depending on projects. There must be no embedding or stretching between lining blocks and surrounding blocks. To realize simulation of the full-length anchorage bolt, at every discontinuity passed through the bolt, a set of normal and tangential spring needs to be added along the bolt's axial and tangential direction. Thus, bolt's axial force, shearing force and full-length anchorage effect are all realized synchronously. And, failure criterions of anchorage effect are established for different failure modes. In the meantime, from the perspective of improving surrounding rock masses' overall strength, a new equivalent and tentative simulation method is proposed, it can save calculation storage and improve efficiency. Along the text, simulation algorithms and applications of these new reinforcement modes in DDARF are given.

This paper presents a new discrete-time fuzzy-sliding mode controller for robust vibration control of a smart structure featuring a piezofilm actuator. A governong equation of motion for the smart beam structure is derived and discrete-time codel with mismatched uncertainties such as parameter variations is constructed ina state space. A discrete-time sliding mode control system consisting of an equivalent controller and a discontinuous controller is formulated. In the design of the equivalent part, so called an equivalent controller separation method is adopted to achieve vzster convergence to a sliding surface without extension of a sliding region, in which the system robustness maynot be guaranteed. On the other hand, the discontinuous part is constructed on the basis of both the sliding and the convergence conditions using a time-varying feedback gain. The sliding moide controller is then incorporated with a fuzzy technique to appropriately determine principal control parameters such as a discountinuous feedback gain. Experimental implementation on the forced and random vibraiton controls is undertaken in order to demonstrate superior control performance of the proposed controller.
This paper presents an exact integration for the hypersingular boundary integral equation of two-dimensional elastostatics. The boundary is discretized by straight segments and the physical variables are approximated by discontinuous quadratic elements. The integral for the hypersingular boundary integral equation analysis is given in a closed form. It is proven that using the exact integration for discontinuous boundary element, the singular integral in the Cauchy Principal Value and the hypersingular integral in the Hadamard Finite Part can be obtained straightforward without special treatment. Two numerical examples are implemented to verify the correctness of the derived exact integration.
