An asymmetrical directional coupler with two nonidentical fibers has, for the first time, been proposed and analyzed for an EDFA gain flattening filter (GFF). The characteristics of the transmission spectra of the GFFs have been theoretically investigated for the core spacings, the coupling lengths and the fiber parameters of the asymmetrical directional coupler. The analytical results show that an EDFA gain spectrum with flatness of ~7 ㏈ can be flattened to within $\pm$0.75 ㏈ over a bandwidth of 30 nm by using the asymmetrical directional coupler-based GFF.
Binaural hearing aids with a voice transmitter have been widely used to enhance sound quality in noisy environment. However, this system has a limitation on sound-source localization. In this study, we investigated automatic directional-gain control method using geomagnetic sensors to provide directional information to binaural hearing aid user. The loudness gains of two hearing aids were differently controlled based on the directional information between a speaker position and a viewing direction of hearing aids user. This relative directional information was measured by two geomagnetic sensors on hearing aids user and a speaker. The results showed that the loudness gains were accurately controlled and could provide directional information based on the cue of interaural level differences.

FRLGC(Fiber Ring laser Gain Clamped) EDFA Is demonstrated for an automatic gain control in hi-directional ADM(Add Drop Multiplexer) node configuration. Specifically, we investigate hi-directional characteristics of noise figure. Assuming a hi-directional small signal input, noise figures for forward or backward signal input are calculated using average inversion algorithm, according to the propagating directions and lasing wavelengths of a compensating signal. The operating condition of FRLGC-EDFA may be optimized with a backward lasing and short lasing wavelength in the aspect of hi-directional noise figure characteristics.
This paper presents a novel design of a differential patch antenna for 60-GHz millimeter-wave applications. The design process of the back-to-back (BTB) patch antenna is based on the conventional single-patch antenna. The initial design of the BTB patch antenna (Type-I) has a patch size of 0.66 × 0.98 mm2 and a substrate size of 0.99 × 1.48 mm2. It has a gain of 1.83 dBi and an efficiency of 94.4% with an omni-directional radiation pattern. A 0.4 mm-thick high-resistivity silicon (HRS) is employed for the substrate of the BTB patch antenna. The proposed antenna is further analyzed to investigate the effect of substrate size and resistivity. As the substrate resistivity decreases, the gain and efficiency degrade due to the substrate loss. As the substrate (HRS) size decreases approaching the patch size, the resonant frequency increases with a higher gain and efficiency. The BTB patch antenna has optimal performances when the substrate size matches the patch size on the HRS substrate (Type-II). The antenna is redesigned to have a patch size of 0.81 × 1.18 mm2 on the HRS substrate in the same size. It has an efficiency of 94.9% and a gain of 1.97 dBi at the resonant frequency of 60 GHz with an omni-directional radiation pattern. Compared to the initial design of the BTB patch antenna (Type-I), the optimal BTB patch antenna (Type-II) has a slightly higher efficiency and gain with a considerable reduction in antenna area by 34.8%.
In this paper, the performance of upidirectional and hi-directional regenerative erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) is compared. The systems are operating above laser oscillation threshold. The experimental results show that the unidirectional regenerative EDFA has a better performance than the hi-directional.

In this paper, a multi-band ceramic chip antenna for WLAN(Wireless LAN) applications is designed. The design target is to obtain 0 dBi of coverage gain with omni directional radiation pattern. The antenna is fabricated using Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramic(LTCC) technology. The size of the chip antenna is $2.2{\times}9.65{\times}1.02$mm. The measured antenna gain is 1 dBi at 2.44 GHz and 0.5 dBi at 5.5 GHz. The omni directional radiation pattern for the two operating bands is obtained. The measured bandwidth(S11=-10 dB) are 90 MHz at 2.44 GHz and 1280 MHz at 5.5 GHz respectively

In this paper, we implement a non-time-varying transfer function of the duty ratio to improve the control characteristics in a control system that Input voltage and the output voltage is varied, DC / DC converters for bi-directional charging. When control is performed with using controller gain of conventional design, characteristics of the control is varied to fluctuations of the input voltage. The proposed method is the equivalently removing method for duty ratio in entire control block, by voltage controller gain is changed for inverse of the duty ratio. The proposed non-time-varying duty ratio transfer function is applied to DC / DC converter for bi-directional charging. In this paper, feasibility and superiority is verified through PSIM simulations and experiments.
This paper proposes a new design of directional couplers with high directivity for personal communication services (PCS) and International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 (IMT-2000). The directional coupler is used to check and verify the power, frequency, and antenna reflection of a signal at transmission stations for mobile communications. The performance requirements of directional couplers are a strong coupling to reduce the effect on the transmitted power and high directivity to suppress the interference of the reflected signals and reduce the errors in communication. So far, various architectures have been proposed to gain high directivity, and there have been many studies used to obtain a strong coupling. However, conventional architectures for high directivity and strong coupling have a directivity of only about 20 dB, and there have been difficulties to achieve the higher directivity of 30 dB suitable for PCS and IMT-2000. This paper proposes a new architecture of directional couplers based on a grounding composed of strip lines, and compares the test results of this directional coupler with conventional ones. The results show that the proposed directional coupler has a directivity of more than 30 dB and is adequate for PCS and IMT-2000.

Directional MAC protocols have drawn great attentions recently in super high speed wireless local/personal area networks due to their higher antenna gain, better spatial reuse, longer transmission range, and lower interference. Despite of these merits, directional MAC protocols suffer from deafness problem. The deafness problem occurs if a node does not answer an RTS frame addressed to it. To overcome this problem, directional MAC protocols have aimed at avoiding the deafness problem using multiple control frames or advance notice techniques or distinguishing deafness from collision. In this paper, we analyze the performance of these schemes in deafness environments with some scenarios. Through performance analysis, we compare the performance of these schemes through evaluating actual network throughput.

Delivery of high quality video over a wide area network with large number of users poses great challenges for the video communication system. To ensure video quality, multiple descriptions have recently attracted various attention as a way of encoding and visual information delivery over wireless network. We propose a new efficient multiple description coding (MDC) technique. Quincunx lattice sub-sampling is used for generating multiple descriptions of an image. In this paper, we propose the application of a directional discrete cosine transform (DCT) to a sub-sampled quincunx lattice to create an MDC representation. On the decoder side, the image is decoded from the received side information. If all the descriptions arrive successfully, the image is reconstructed by combining the descriptions. However, if only one side description is received, decoding is executed using an interpolation process. The experimental results show that such the directional DCT can achieve a better coding gain as well as energy packing efficiency than the conventional DCT with re-alignment.
