This experiment was conducted to investigate weed infestation and to determine effective weed control methods in direct-seeded rice. Twenty two weed species occurred in dry- and water-seeded rice, which was mainly composed of annual weeds. Dominant weed species in dry-seeded rice were Cyperus difformis, Echinochloa crus-galli, Aneilema keisak and Digitaria sanguinalis in discending order. Dominant weed species in water-seeded lice were E. crus-galli, C. difformis, Monochoria vaginalis and Scirpus juncoides. E. crus-galli emerged at 7 days after sowing. In water-seeded rice, E. crus-galli emerged at 5 days after sowing, and M vaginalis, S. juncoides and C. difformis at 8~10 days after sowing. Mean days to emerge important weeds was 20 days in dry-seeded rice and 13 days in water-seeded rice. Leaf development of weeds was faster than that of rice in dry-seeded rice. In water-seeded rice, E eras-galli was more vigorous than rice, but leaf development of other weeds were slower than that of rice. Changes in number of weeds and dry weight oil weed species varied depending upon weed species in the direct-seeded rice. Dry weight of weeds were increased greatly from 30 days to 60 days after sowing in dry-seeded rice. Number of weeds tended to increase up to 40 days after sowing drastically, and then trend of the increase was dull thereafter. Dry weight and number of weeds increased up to 20~60 days after sowing in water-seeded rice. Most effective herbicide treatments was foliar application of cyhalofop/bentazon at 20 days after sowing followed by fenoxaprop/bentazon at 45 days after sowing in dry-seeded rice. All herbicide treatments except foliar applications were very effective to control weeds in water-seeded rice. Slight phytotoxicity was observed in foliar applied fenoxaprop/bentazon at 45 days after sowing in water-seeded rice, but it did not affect rice yield.
The experiment was conducted at Gyeongbuk Provincial Rural Development Administration in 1996 to obtain basic information on weed ecology and effective weed control in direct-seeded rice fields under different seeding types and seeding times. A large number of upland weeds such as Echinochloa crus-galli, Digitaria sanguinalis, Capsella bursa-pastoris and Stetaria viridis etc occurred at early growth stage, while Eleocharis kuroguwai, Aneilema keisak and Cyperus serotinus dominated at late stage in dry seeded rice field. In wet seeded rice field, the dominance of E. crus-galli was lower and the occurrence of M. vaginalis and A. keisak were higher than in dry seeded field. Amount of weed occurrence in dry seeded field was 1.8 to 2.4 times greater than in wet seeded field and it increased with delaying seeding time. Increasing rate of weed occurrence through whole life cycle was the highest at 20 days after seeding (DAS) to 40 DAS, regardless of seeding types and seeding times. Simpson index in wet seeded field was higher than in dry seeded field and it gradually increased as growing of dominant species. For F-value test, it was recognized as statistical significant in seeding types, seeding times and interaction of two factors.
Differences in need occurrence and competition were investigated among five types of rice(Oryza sativa L.) cultivation. Dry weights of weeds in between transplanting and/or seeding and heading date showed in the decreasing order of dry direct-seeded, flood direct-seeded, machine transplanting with 10-day-old seedling, machine transplanting with 30-day-old seedling, and conventional hand transplanting. A similar trend was obtained with application of weedy followed by weed-free. Weed-free periods allowed to decrease by 20% dry weight of rice were 3 weeks after transplanting(WAT) in transplanting cultivations, 5 weeks after seeding(WAS) in wet direct-seeded rice, and 7-8 WAS in dry direct-seeded rice. On the other hand, weedy periods as determined by the same criterion were 9 WAT in conventional hand transplanting and machine transplanting with 30-day-old seedling, 7 WAT in machine transplanting with 10-day-old seedling, 8 WAS in dry direct-seeded rice, and 6 WAS in flood direct-seeded rice.

A field case study was performed to investigate optimum cropping technique of direct seeded rice. In addition, an economic analysis was made to see the effect of this method. Field study was performed at a 2.1㏊ paddy field in Kimjae city, Chonbuk province from 1991 to 1999. Various direct seeding method such as dryland seeding, wetland seeding, and no-till wetland seeding were introduced. Optimum cropping techniques such as when and how to manage the rotary till, water supply, herbicide application, and ponding depth were developed for different cropping methods. Based on this study ₩640,000 per ㏊ can be saved by direct seeding due to no nursery cost, and ₩l,220,000 per ㏊ can be saved by no-till and no nursery cost. With further study these cropping techniques including the no-till direct deeding proves to be advantageous these can be adopted for the most of the paddy fields in Korea.
This study was conducted to find out if there are some differences in germination, growth and morphological characteristics between rice(Oryza saliva) and barnyardgrass(Echinochloa crus-galli) under various cropping patterns and to abtain the fundamental information on weed control method in direct seeded rice. Rice was broadcast on soil-surface(Broadcast rice), drill seeded in soil(Drilled rice) and barnyardgrass was drill seeded in soil(Barnyardgrass) under dry(Dry condition) and water direct seeded condition(Water condition). Also rice was transplanted with 8-day seedlings(8 -day-old seedling) and 25-day seedlings(25-*day-old seedling) under transplanting condition(Transplanting condition) At 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 15 and 20 days after seeding or transplanting(DAS/T), plants were harvested to examine their germination, growth and morphology. The major results were as follows ; Until 5 DAS/T growth of rice and barnyardgrass were well established under dry condition but under water condition growth of shoots was mainly elongated. At 20 DAS/T barnyardgrass had greater plant height and shoot fresh weight than rice under direct seeded condition, while plant height and shoot fresh weight of rice was greater than those of barnyardgrass under transplanting condition. Root length of barnyardgrass was greater under the dry, drilled, direct seeded conditions than that of rice under the water, broadcast, transplanting condition, respectively. And root fresh weight of rice under direct seeded condition was similar to that of barnyardgrass but that of rice under transplanting condition was significantly greater than that of barnyardgrass. Barnyardgrass only formed mesocotyls and its length increased with increased depth of seeding. Leaf stage and leaf area of barnyardgrass was greater under the dry, drilled than those of rice under water, broadcast conditions, respectively, while those of rice was greater than those of barnyardgrass under transplanting condition. Chlorophyll contents were higher in barnyardgrass, dry direct seeded rice, transplanted rice, water direct seeded rice in descending order.
Field experiments were conducted to evaluate the competitive characteristics of weeds with direct-seeded rice. In both dry- and water-seeded rice a weeds) started to grow over the plant height of rice from 45 days after seeding, and there was a great difference in plant height between rice and weeds from 75 days after seeding. Dry weights of weeds drastically increased from 30 days after seeding in both dry- and water-seeded rice, and the increase of dry weight was faster in dry-seeded rice than in water-seeded rice with time. Although weeds competed with rice at earlier growth stages, they did not reduce rice yields and its components until competition period of 75 days after seeding. Required period of weed free at the beginning of the season was 30 to 45 days from seeding in order to avoid any yield loss. The numbers of panicle per plant, spikelets per panicle, grain weight and yield of rice in dry-seeded rice had highly negative correlations with the growth ratios of Echinochloa crus-galli, Ludwigia prostrata, Cyperus difformis, Bidens frondosa, and Cyperus serotinus. In water-seeded rice, the number of plants, panicle per plant, spikelets per panicle and yield had highly negative correlations with growth rate of Echinochloa crus-galli, but the percentage of filled spikelet had negative correlation with Cyperus difformis. Research indicated that in direct-seeded rice weed competition with rice started from 30 days after seeding and significant yield loss by weed competition occurred from 75 days after seeding.

Relay intercropping system of direct seeded rice and winter cereal is labor saving cultivation and has high land use efficiency in Japan. In this system, rice seeds are direct seeded into inter-row space of winter cereals (wheat or barley) in March or April. If the direct seeding of rice is conducted before stem elongation phase or using suitable seeder, these are little effect to yield of winter cereals. Though the seeds are generally thiuram treated, it's a matter that seedling establishment rate (SER) of direct seeded rice is low and unstable. The cause of low SER has not been revealed. In present study, with the aim to reveal causes of low SER, we conducted experiments and investigated the SER, and analyzed some factors that might affect SER. Experiment1: In 2015, 2016, we buried rice seeds underground, and investigated the transition of the seed survival rates (SSR). Seeds were thiuram-treated or non-treated. In 2 periods, SSR of thiuram-treated seeds were significantly higher than non-treated seeds. In 2016, thiuram-treated seeds were high in SSR (almost 75%) at April 30th, but low SER (10~27%) after harvest of winter cereals. Therefore, almost all of seed death might have been happen after germination. Analysis 1: We investigated the SER and cultivation conditions in Ibaraki pref. for several years. Meteorological factors were referred from the nearest point of AMeDAS. From mean temperature (MT) among 5days after and before the day, we divided the period of seeding ~June 20 to phase1~4. We defined each phase as below; Phase1: $MT{\leq}10^{\circ}C$, Phase2: $10^{\circ}C<MT{\leq}15^{\circ}C$, Phase3:$15^{\circ}C<MT{\leq}20^{\circ}C$, Phase4: $MT>20^{\circ}C$. We analyzed the correlation of SER and meteorological factors by each phase. Total number of days in phase 1~4 was significantly negative correlated with SER. In phase1, total rain fall and number of soil wetting days were significantly negative correlated with SER. In phase2~4, only MT was significantly positive correlated with SER. This result suggested that rainfalls in phase1 declined seed vigor to emergence from soil surface, by repeated water absorption and re-dry. From these present studies, it was suggested that one of factors of low SER of direct seeded rice in relay intercropping system is changing of water condition by rainfalls in phase1 ($MT{\leq}10^{\circ}C$). To improve SER, it's necessary to consider something seed treatments such as prevent water absorption during phase1. However, 58~60% of seeds seemed to die during May. It's suggested that, if seeds are thiuram treated, almost all of seeds can germinate underground, but the seed vigor to emergence from soil surface are insufficient. Further studies are needed to reveal the rest causes that is happening during emergence from soil surface.
The research was conducted to evaluate a different seedling establishment of rice germplasms which were obtained from the IRRI (International Rice Research Institute) under the direct seeded condition. There was highly significant difference in terms of statistical analysis among cultivars. The seedling establishment of cultivars tested was the highest with ASD1 > IR50 > IR72 > Taothabi > Uplri5 > CO25 > Dula > Moroberakan. The difference of seedling establishment among cultivars particular in dry condition was high between ASD1 and Moroberakan and other cultivars.

Direct-seeded rice can have comparable yield with transplanted rice if its inherent problems can be solved. It is a labor-saving technology and can significantly reduce production cost because seedling nursery , pulling , and transplanting are omitted. Turnaround time between cropping is reduced hence the possibility of a third annual crop. But direct-seeded rice is very vulnerable to pest attack (by birds, rats, and golden snails), desiccation, weed infestation, and prone to lodging resulting to unstable crop establishment and inconsistent yield. These problems can be solved by anaerobic seeding (sowing pre-germinated seeds under the soil). It requires precise seed placement into the soil to optimize its benefits. We developed a four-row anaerobic direct seeder (US $ 200 commercial price) for this purpose . It consist of a structural framework mounted with a drum -hopper metering device, flotation type drivewheels, spring-loaded and adjustable furrow closers, and furrow open rs, and a plastic rainguard. It can sow in line pre-germinated seeds into the soil thus permitting the use of mechanical weeders for a chemical-free weed control. Its performance was comparable with the Japanese two-row anaerobic seeder (costing US$400) in terms of seed placement and crop establishment. It was tested with five cultivars. Seeding rate varied from 38 kg/ha to 80kg/ha. Crop establishment ranged from 64 to 99 percent while grain yield varied from 3.0 t/ha to 5.4t/ha. A six-row anaerobic seeder was also developed and adapted to a powertiller for increased capacity , field efficiency , and easier operation. The anaerobic seeder is useful to farmers shifting to direct seeding to reduce rice production cost and to researchers conducting agronomic studies in direct-seeded rice. Blueprint of the machine is available free of charge from IRRI.
The results of recent researches for improvement of seedling stand in direct seeded rice on the dry paddy in Korea were summarized as the following ; a variety to be cultivated should be chosen the characteristics of high percentage germination under low temperature, shorter period of shoot emergence, and better growth of the mesocotyl and shoots. Meanwhile, there was 40% increase in seedling stand at the treatment of removal of the seed awn under using the drill seeder. After seeding the rice seed covered with soil of 3cm depth was better seedling emergence and also there was the hightest seedling emergence at the 70% of moisture content of the soil. In addition, the application of the Release containing GA 10% enabled to increase the seedling stand and furthermore it was effective under deep seeding depth. The optimum seeding date should be seeded around May 10 when mean air temperature is above 12-13$^{\circ}C$ so that may establish more less 70% in seedling stand. Based on an appropriate seedling stand of 150/$m^2$, the optimum seeding rate was 5kg/10a. It was the best in seeding method using drill seeder and the most desirable recommended seeding method was the drill seeder in terms of seedling stand. In order to improve seedling stand water management was more effective in canal irrigation and in drainage at 6hr after irrigation following by the seeding process. On the other hand, for the increase of seedling stand under flooded condition a variety might have characters being better germination at low concentration of dissolved oxygen and vertically deeper growing of the crown root. Also, seedling stand was able to increase with the seed coating of $CaO_2$in the flooded soil. It was possible to be seeded on the early part of May being mean air temperature of avove 10$^{\circ}C$ and the optimum seeding rate was 5kg/10a. For an effective water management water would be flooded up to 3cm depth for 2-3 weeks after seeding. The rice plant grown under the direct seeded cultivation might be not so much strong in lodging resistance compared to that grown under the transplanting and moreover direct seeded rice cultivation under flooded condition would be more weak growth of the rice plant than that on dry paddy. Meanwhile, the lodging would be affected by the seeding rate, the soil depth after seeding. and seeding method even in the same variety. In particular, roots in the lodging pattern of direct seeded rice cultivation under flooded condition were largely distributed on the soil surface so that resulted easily in the lodging. In general, the lodging resistance would be greater as seeding rate and amount of N fertilizer application are lower and soil depth after seeding is higher. Among the introduction of different seeding method the high ridged drill seeding method on dry paddy soil resulted in the lowest in the lodging index and also it was lower in the drill seeding method than in the scattering seeding method under flooded condition. In case of more than 150 seedlings per $m^2$ there was a severe lodging due to high lodging index at the 3rd and 4th internodes. The effective lodging prevention was able to at the treatment of the Inabenfide at 45 days before heading and the Uniconazol at 15 days before heading which caused the shortage by 10-15cm in culm length. Also, fertilizer management using split application of nitrogen would be contributed the reduction of lodging at the rate of 20-30-20-20-10%(basal-5th leaf stage-7th leaf stage-panicle initiation stage-heading stage) on the dry paddy soil.
