In this paper, the hybrid method to identify the exciting forces and radiated noise generated from the reciprocating compressor was presented. In order to identify the exciting force, both the acceleration data measured at the compressor shell and numerical finite element model for the full set of compressor were used simultaneously. Applying the identified exciting forces to the numerical model, the velocity responses of all nodes at the shell were predicted. Finally the radiated noises from the vibrating shell were predicted by using the direct boundary element acoustic analysis. For precise numerical modeling, the stiffness of rubber mounts and body springs were identified experimentally from the natural frequencies measured by impact testing. The error of over-all sound pressure level between predicted noise and measured noise was about 2.9 dB.

Machining accuracy is closely related with tool deflection induced by cutting forces. In this research, cutting forces and tool deflection in end milling are expressed as a closed form of tool rotational angle and cutting conditions. The discrete cutting fores caused by periodic tool entry and exit are represented as a continuous function using the Fourier series expansion. Tool deflection is predicted by direct integration of the distributed loads on cutting edges. Cutting conditions, tool geometry, run-outs and the stiffness of tool clamping part are considered together far cutting forces and tool deflection estimation. Compared with numerical methods, the presented method has advantages in prediction time reduction and the effects of feeding and run-outs on cutting forces and tool deflection can be analyzed quantitatively. This research can be effectively used in real time machining error estimation and cutting condition selection for error minimization since the form accuracy is easily predicted from tool deflection curve.

In this paper the critical speed analysis and design sensitivity investigation are carried out with an APU(auxiliary power unit) gas turbine having a spline shaft connection. The DDM(direct differential method) is directly applied to formulate the critical speed design sensitivity problem of a general nonsymmetric-matrix rotor-bearing system. The design sensitivity analysis have shown that the critical speed change rate to the support modeling of the spline shaft connection point is extremely negligible, and thereby its design uncertainty is lifted. It has also been confirmed that the critical speeds up to the 4th are not sensitive to the design stiffness coefficients of 4-main bearings or supports, including two air foil bearings. Further, the critical speed change rate to the shaft-element length have shown quantitatively that the spline shaft has some limited influence on the 4th critical speed.
This study presents a macro-modeling procedure for nonlinear finite element analysis of reinforced and prestressed concrete panels under blast loading. The analysis procedure treats cracked concrete as an orthotropic material based on a smeared rotating crack model within the context of total-load secant stiffness-based formulation. A direct time integration method compatible with the analysis formulation is adapted to solve the dynamic equation of motion. Considerations are made to account for strain rate effects. The analysis procedure is verified by modeling 14 blast tests from various sources reported in the literature including a blast simulation contest. The analysis results are compared against those obtained from experiments, simplified single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) methods, and sophisticated hydrocodes. It is demonstrated that the smeared crack macro-modeling approach is a viable alternative analysis procedure that gives more information about the structural behavior than SDOF methods, but does not require detailed micro-modeling and extensive material characterization typically needed with hydrocodes.

In this study, the axial compressive behavior of novel quadruple C-channel built-up cold-formed steel columns with different slenderness ratio was investigated, using the experimental and numerical analysis. The axial compressive capacity and failure modes of the columns were obtained and analyzed. The finite element models considering the geometry, material and contact nonlinearity were developed to simulate and analyze the structural behavior of the columns further. There was a great correlation between the numerical analyses and test results, which indicated that the finite element model was reasonable and accurate. Then influence of, slenderness ratio, flange width-to-thickness ratio and screw spacing on the mechanical behavior of the columns were studied, respectively. The tests and numerical results show that due to small slenderness ratio, the failure modes of the specimens are generally local buckling and distortional buckling. The axial compressive strength and stiffness of the quadruple C-channel built-up cold-formed steel columns decrease with the increase of maximum slenderness ratio. When the screw spacing is ranging from 150mm to 450mm, the axial compressive strength and stiffness of the quadruple C-channel built-up cold-formed steel columns change little. The axial compressive capacity of quadruple C-channel built-up cold-formed steel columns increases with the decrease of flange width-thickness ratio. A modified effective length factor is proposed to quantify the axial compressive capacity of the quadruple C-channel built-up cold-formed steel columns with U-shaped track in the ends.

This paper presents a time domain method for soil-structure interaction analysis for seismic loadings. It is based on the finite element formulation incorporating analytical frequency-dependent infinite elements for the far field soil. The dynamic stiffness matrices of the far field region formulated using the present method in frequency domain can be easily transformed into the corresponding matrices in time domain. At first, the equivalent earthquake forces are evaluated along the interface between the near and the far fields from the free-field response analysis carried out in frequency domain, and the results are transformed into the time domain. An efficient procedure is developed for the convolution integrals to evaluate the interaction force along the interface, which depends on the response on the interface at the past time instances as well as the concurrent instance. Then, the dynamic responses are obtained for the equivalent earthquake force and the interaction force using Newmark direct integration technique. Since the response analysis is carried out in time domain, it can be easily extended to the nonlinear analysis. Example analysis has been carried out to verify the present method in a multi-layered half-space.

A finite element formulation of vibration control of a laminated plate with piezoelectric sensor/ actuators is presented. Classical lamination theory with the induced strain actuation and Hamilton's principle are used to formulate the equations of motion of the system. The total charge developed on the sensor layer is calculated from the direct piezoelectric equation. The equations of motion and the total charge are discretized with 4 node, 12 degrees of freedom quadrilateral plate bending elements with one electrical degree of freedom. The mass and stiffness of the piezoelectric layer are introduced by treating them as another layer in laminated plate. Piezoelectric sensor/actuators are distributed, but discrete due to the geometry of electrodes. By defining an i.d. number of electrode for each element, modelling of electrodes with variable geometry can be achieved. The static response of a piezoelectric bimorph beam to electrical loading and sensor voltage to given displacement are calculated. For a laminated plate under the negative velocity feedback control, the direct time response by the Newmark-.betha. method and damped frequencies and modal damping ratios by modal state space analysis are derived.

In this study, a new 4-node general shell element with 6 DOFs per node is presented. Drilling rotational degrees of freedom are introduced by the variational principle with an independent rotation field. In formulation of the element, substitute transverse shear strain fields are used to avoid shear locking, while four nonconforming modes are applied in the in-plane displacement fields as a remedy for membrane locking. In addition, a direct modification method for nonconforming modes is employed in the numerical implementation of nonconforming modes to represent constant strain states. A 9-points integration rule is adopted for volume integration in the computation of the element stiffness matrix. With the combined use of these techniques, the developed shell element has no spurious zero energy modes, and can represent a constant strain state. Several numerical tests are carried out to evaluate the performance of the new element developed. The test results show that the behavior of the elements is satisfactory.

In this paper, an accuracy analysis of parallel method based on non-overlapping domain decomposition method is carried out. In this approach, proposed by Tak et al.(2013), the decomposed subdomains do not overlap each other and the connection between adjacent subdomains is determined via simple connective finite element named interfacial element. This approach has two main advantages. The first is that a direct method such as gauss elimination is available even in a singular problem because the singular stiffness matrix from floating domain can be converted to invertible matrix by assembling the interfacial element. The second is that computational time and storage can be reduced in comparison with the traditional finite element tearing and interconnect(FETI) method. The accuracy of analysis using proposed method, on the other hand, is inclined to decrease at cross points on which more than three subdomains are interconnected. Thus, in this paper, an accuracy analysis for a novel non-overlapping domain decomposition method with a variety of subdomain numbers which are interconnected at cross point is carried out. The cause of accuracy degradation is also analyze and establishment of countermeasure is discussed.
