A Design of Capacitated Hub-and-Spoke Networks with Direct Shipment: Evolutionary Algorithm based Approach (용량제한과 직접수송이 있는 Hub-and-Spoke 네트워크 설계: 진화알고리듬 기반의 접근법에 의해)

  • In this paper we address a design problem for hub-and-spoke networks and then consider a capacitated hub locations problem with direct shipment (CHLPwD). We determine the location of hubs, the allocation of nodes to hubs, and direct shipment paths in the network, with the objective of minimizing the total cost in the network. In this paper, CHLPwD is formulated as 0-1 integer programming. We develop an evolutionary algorithm here to solve the large sized CHLPwD. To do this, we present the representation and the genetic operators suitable for the problem and propose a heuristic method for the allocation of nodes to hubs. To enhance the search capability, problem-specific information is used in our evolutionary algorithm. The proposed algorithm is compared with the heuristic method in terms of solution quality and computation time. The experimental results show that our algorithm can provide better solutions than the heuristic.

Carbon Reduction Investments under Direct Shipment Strategy

  • Recently much research efforts have focused on how to manage carbon emissions in logistics operations. This paper formulates a model to determine an optimal shipment size with aims to minimize the total cost consisting not only of inventory and transportation costs but also cost for carbon emissions. Unlike the literature assuming carbon emission factors as a given condition, we consider the emission factors as decision variables. It is allowed to make an investment in improving carbon emission factors. The optimal investment decision is shown to be of a threshold type with respect to unit investment costs. Moreover, the findings in this work provide insights on the various elements of the investment decision and their impacts.

Exposure to Dust and Organic Gas during Chicken Entrance and Shipment Tasks in Poultry Farms (양계장에서 입식 및 출하작업시 분진과 가스상 물질의 노출 측정 조사)

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to evaluate area exposure of airborne dust and organic gas during entrance and shipment of chicken in poultry farms Methods: Total dust was measured with NIOSH method 0500. The volume of distributed dust and organic gas(Ammonia, TVOC, Hydrogen Sulfide) were measured using direct reading instrument. Results: The range of concentrations of total dust in area sample was $0.07{\sim}4.91mg/m^3$ during the entrance of chicks and $4.37{\sim}9.4mg/m^3$ during shipment respectively. Concentration of ammonia reached approximately 9 ppm during shipment. There was a difference of concentration of total dust in the area sample between shipment and entrance tasks. Conclusions: It was found that the development of a special intervention program by type of task should be considered for reducing respiratory health effects among poultry farmers.

Supply Chain Network Design Considering Environmental Factor and Transportation Types

  • Most important thing when designing and implementing a supply chain network is to consider various problems which may occur in real world situation. In this paper, we propose a supply chain network considering two problems (environmental factor and transportation types) under real world situation. CO2 emission amount as environmental factor is considered since it is usually generated from production and transportation processes. Normal delivery, direct delivery and direct shipment as transportation types are also considered since many customers ask various transportation types for delivery or shipment of their products under on-line or off-line purchase environment. The proposed supply chain network considering environmental factor and transportation types is represented in a mathematical formulation and implemented using hybrid genetic algorithm (HGA) approach. In numerical experiments, several scales of supply chain networks are presented and implemented using HGA approach. The performance of the HGA approach is compared with those of some conventional approaches under various measures of performance. Finally, it is proved that the performance of the HGA approach is superior to those of the others.

  • The objective of this study is to develop a supply chain-based freight distribution channel choice model considering shippers' logistics behaviors which will be used for freight demand estimation. For this purpose, this study utilized the distribution channel data of the petrochemical and automobile industries collected by KTDB center. The distribution channel choice models for these industries were developed by including transport mode, time, cost, and shipment size. It was found that the multinomial logit model with transport cost, time and shipment size is the best, and as shipment increases, bigger transport mode is preferred. Generally direct distribution channel with small truck was preferred over the one using distribution center and/or big truck.

  • Dynamic modeling was used to predict the Pseudomonas spp. concentration in Alaska pollack under dynamic temperature conditions in a programmable incubator using Euler's method. The model evaluation showed good agreement between the predicted and measured concentrations of Pseudomonas spp. In the simulation, three kinds of distribution path were assumed: consumers buying from a distribution center (A), manufacturer (B), or direct market (C). Each of these distribution paths consists of six phases: shipping, warehousing/shipment, warehousing/storing, processing, market exhibition, and sale/consumption. Sensitivity analysis of each phase was also implemented. The Pseudomonas concentrations and sensitivities ($S_k$) at the terminal phases of the three paths were estimated to be (A) 11.174 log CFU/g and 10.550 log $S_k$, (B) 10.948 log CFU/g and 10.738 log $S_k$, and (C) 8.758 log CFU/g and 9.602 log $S_k$, respectively. The sensitivities indicated that path A has the highest risk of failure in managing the relevant phases.

  • There are more problems in distributing agricultural and special products than industrial products because they have such restrictions as seasonal fluctuation in the quantity, indeterminate and diverse shapes, many farm households, a small amount of shipment, and mandatory guide and maintenance. However, with social atmosphere called well-being, there are increasing concerns about inorganic agricultural products and direct trade with farmers. It is therefore urgent to stabilize the price of agricultural and special products and to correctly grasp and improve logistics activities for those dealing with agricultural and special products in order to supply fresh ones. This study aimed at examining logistics activities and the information technology level for agricultural and special products, determining how these factors affect logistics performance, and eventually suggesting a scheme to improve the logistics achievements for agricultural and special products. For this purpose, it selected information technology and logistics activity levels as independent variables and logistics performance as a dependent variable. The information technology level was measured for utility, holding level, and concern, respectively, and the logistics activity level was tested for the level of using the logistics information system in those companies concerned. From the above-mentioned findings, it is urgent to enhance distribution technology and its level immediately since distribution of agricultural and special products is poor in Korea and good distribution can contribute to a reduction of logistics costs or improvement of customer service.

Unfair Restrain on Competition in Air Cargo Fuel Surcharge Case (공정거래법상 부당한 경쟁제한의 의미 - 항공화물 유류할증료 담합사건을 중심으로 -)

  • On May 16, 2014 the Supreme Court of Korea rendered its decision with respect to litigation filed by All Nippon Airways Co., Ltd. ("ANA") for revocation of an order of correction and payment of a penalty imposed by the Korea Fair Trade Commission ("KFTC"). On or around September 2002, ANA and various airlines operating air cargo service from Japan to Korea were allegedly to have agree to introduce of fuel surcharge into their rates on cargo fares in an attempt to recoup falling profits from rising of oil price. As this hard core cartel was per se prohibited under Korean competition law (The Monopoly Regulation And Fair Trade Act), KFTC began an investigation and consequently with fruitful results imposed an amount of penalty and issued an order of prohibition. ANA protested against this imposition by filing suit against KFTC under the reasons that (1) their agreement was simply pursuant to the relevant laws and regulations including Air Transport Agreement between Korea and Japan, (2) there was an administrative guidance from Japanese government to allow this agreement, (3) extraterritorial application of Korean competition law to the agreement in this matter was improper as it was made within Japan and targeted only for the shipment from Japan to Korea: accordingly there is not a direct and serious effect between the agreement and any result of anti-competitive. This article aims to review ANA's allegation and the judgement delivered by Korean court under some issues respectively; (1) whether there is an effectively actual anti-competitive cartel between airlines including plaintiff, (2) whether filed rate doctrine is reasonable and applicable in this case for precluding wrongfulness, (3) what is the reasonable limitation of boundaries in extraterritorial application of Korean competition law. Additionally, this article also suggests to concern particular features of air transport business as an regulated industry in judging the unfair restrain on competition.
