In order to investigate the physical mechanism of the energy cascade in homogeneous isotropic turbulence, we introduce Galilean-invariant energy and its transfer rate in the real space as a function of position, time and scale. By using a database of direct numerical simulations (DNS) of homogeneous isotropic turbulence, it is shown that (i) fully developed turbulence consists of multi-scale coherent vortices of tubular shapes, (ii) the energy at each scale is mainly confined in vortex tubes with the radii of the same order of the length scale, and (iii) the energy transfer takes place around pairs (especially, anti-parallel pairs) of such vortex tubes. Based on these observations, it is suggested that the energy cascade can be caused, in the real space, by the process of the stretching and creation of smaller (i.e. thinner) vortex tubes by the straining field around pairs of larger (i.e. fatter) vortex tubes. Indeed, it is quite easy to find such events (in our DNS fields) which strongly support this scenario of the energy cascade.
A multi-scale analysis of water-cooled reactor thermalhydraulics can be used to take advantage of increased computer power and improved simulation tools, including Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) (in both open and porous mediums), and system thermalhydraulic codes. This paper presents a general strategy for this procedure for various thermalhydraulic scales. A short state of the art is given for each scale, and the role of the scale in the overall multi-scale analysis process is defined. System thermalhydraulic codes will remain a privileged tool for many investigations related to safety. CFD in porous medium is already being frequently used for core thermalhydraulics, either in 3D modules of system codes or in component codes. CFD in open medium allows zooming on some reactor components in specific situations, and may be coupled to the system and component scales. Various modeling approaches exist in the domain from DNS to CFD which may be used to improve the understanding of flow processes, and as a basis for developing more physically based models for macroscopic tools. A few examples are given to illustrate the multi-scale approach. Perspectives for the future are drawn from the present state of the art and directions for future research and development are given.
Prediction of damage caused by low-velocity impact in laminated composite plate is an important problem faced by designers using composites. Not only the inplane stresses but also the interlaminar normal and shear stresses playa role in estimating the damage caused. The work reported here is an effort in getting better predictions of damage in composite plate using DNS approach. In the DNS model, we discretize the composite plates through separate modeling of fiber and matrix for the local microscopic analysis. Through comparison with the homogenized model. In the view of microscopic mechanics with DNS model, interlaminar stress behaviors in the inside of composite materials is investigated and compared with the results of the homogenized model which has been used in the conventional approach of impact analysis.

This paper presents a theoretical study concerning multibubble dynamics in a sound field and the numerical validation for it by employing our new CFD code MTS-DiCUP. In recent papers, the author has shown theoretically that an unknown characteristic frequency, named 'transition frequency,' exists in a multibubble system. For a N -bubble case, up to 2N -1 transition frequencies per bubble have been predicted, only N ones of them correspond to the natural frequencies of the system. The transition frequencies that do not correspond to the natural frequencies give rise to the phase reversal of bubbles' pulsation without resonant response. In this paper, it has been suggested theoretically that those transition frequencies may cause the sign reversal of the secondary Bjerknes force, which is an interaction force acting between acoustically coupled gas bubbles. This theoretical result has been validated by the direct numerical simulation, at least in a qualitative sense.

The aerodynamics of blunt bodies with separation at the sharp corner of the leading edge and reattachment on the body side are particularly important in civil engineering applications. In recent years, a number of experimental and numerical studies have become available on the aerodynamics of a rectangular cylinder with chord-to-thickness ratio equal to 5 (BARC). Despite the interest in the topic, a widely accepted set of guidelines for grid generation about these blunt bodies is still missing. In this work a new, well resolved Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) around the BARC body at Re=3000 is presented and its results compared to previous DNSs of the same case but with different numerical approaches and mesh. Despite the simulations use different numerical approaches, mesh and domain dimensions, the main discrepancies are ascribed to the different grid spacings employed. While a more rigorous analysis is envisaged, where the order of accuracy of the schemes are kept the same while grid spacings are varied alternately along each spatial direction, this represents a first attempt in the study of the influence of spatial resolution in the Direct Numerical Simulation of flows around elongated rectangular cylinders with sharp corners.
Direct numerical simulation (DNS) dataset of a turbulent boundary layer (TBL) with a step change from smooth to rough surface is analyzed to examine spatially developing flow characteristics. The roughness elements are periodically arranged two-dimensional (2-D) spanwise rods with a streamwise pitch of ${\lambda}=8k$ ($=12{\theta}_{in}$), and the roughness height is $k=15{\theta}_{in}$, where ${\theta}_{in}$ is the inlet momentum thickness. The step change is introduced $80{\theta}_{in}$ downstream from the inlet. For the first time, full images from the DNS data with the step change from the smooth to rough walls is present to get some idea of the geometry of turbulent coherent structures over rough wall, especially focusing on their existence and partial dynamics over the rough wall. The results show predominance of hairpin vortices over the rough wall and their spanwise scale growth mechanism by merging.
Direct numerical simulation (DNS) of strongly-heated air flows moving upward in a vertical tube has been conducted to investigate the effect of gas property variations on turbulence modification. Three heating conditions(q$_1$$^{+}$=0.0045, 0.0035 and 0.0018) are selected to reflect the experiment of Shehata and McEligot (1998) at the inlet bulk Reynolds numbers of 4300 and 6000. At these conditions, the flow inside the heated tube remains turbululent or undergoes a transition to subturbulent or laminarizing flow. Consequently, a significant impairment of heat transfer occurs due to the reduction of flow turbulence. The predictions of integral parameters and mean profiles such as velocity and temperature distributions are in excellent agreement with the experiment. The computed turbulence data indicate that a reduction of flow turbulence occurs mainly due to strong flow acceleration effects for strongly-heated internal gas flows. Thus, buoyancy influences are secondary but not negligible especially for turbulent flow at low heating condition. Digital flow visualization also shows that vortical structures rapidly decay as the heating increases.s.
A new efficient numerical method for computing three-dimensional, unsteady, incompressible flows is presented. To eliminate the restriction of CFL condition, a fully-implicit time advancement in which the Crank-Nicolson method is used for both the diffusion and convection terms, is adopted. Based on an approximate block LU decomposition method, the velocity -pressure decoupling is achieved. The additional decoupling of the intermediate velocity components in the convection term is made for the fully -implicit time advancement scheme. Since the iterative procedures for the momentum equations are not required, the velocity components decouplings bring forth the reduction of computational cost. The second-order accuracy in time of the present numerical algorithm is ascertained by computing decaying vortices. The present decoupling method is applied to minimal channel flow unit with DNS (Direct Numerical Simulation).
Direct numerical simulations(DNS) were performed for the prediction of transient buoyant jet diffusion flames where the Froude numbers(Fr) are 5 and 160, respectively. The thermodynamic and transport properties were evaluated using CHEMKIN package to enhance the prediction performance of the DNS code. The simulated buoyant jet diffusion flame of Fr=5 and 160 showed the transient, dynamic motion well. It was identified that the buoyant jet flames were flickered periodically, and the simulated flickering frequency of the jet diffusion flame of Fr=5 was 12.5Hz, which was in good agreement with the experimental results. The flamelet structures of the buoyant jet diffusion flames could be well understood by comparing the scalar dissipation rates(SDR) and the heat release rates(HRR) of the flames. It was found that the SDR was strongly coupled with the HRR in the buoyant jet diffusion flames.
