In this paper, we present an improved multicarrier direct sequence (DS) code division multiple access (CDMA) scheme by modifying the system originally proposed by Kondo and Milstein [13]. In this modified system, different spreading sequences multiplied by a data sequence modulate different carriers. This is to prevent the multiple access capability from reducing when the fading characteristics of different carrier frequencies are highly correlated. We have derived a formula which determines the mean values of the relative received signal strength in a single carrier DS CDMA rake system and in a multicarrier DS-CDMA system. We present results on the comparison of the bit error rate (BER) performance of the two systems including the effect of correlation between fading characteristics of different frequencies under various multipath fading conditions. The results indicate that with 50 users the modified multicarrier DS CDMA system can achieve an uncoded irreducible BER of $1.7{\times}10^{-3}$ with an average received signal-to-noise ratio per bit of 10dB, which is better that $3.0{\times}10^{-3}$ achieved by the single carrier DS CDMA rake system, and also show that if multicarrier CDMA system is used with respect to single carrier CDMA system, the SNR gain is up to 4.5 dB for the uncode BER of $10^{-3}$ being achieved.

Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) have emerged as one of the new hot topics in wireless communications. WMNs have been suggested for use in situations in which some or all of the users are mobile or are located in inaccessible environments. Unconstrained transmission in a WMN may lead to the time overlap of two or more packet receptions, called collisions or interferences, resulting in damaged useless packets at the destination. There are two types of collisions; primary collision, due to the transmission of the stations which can hear each other, and hidden terminal collision, when stations outside the hearing range of each other transmit to the same receiving stations. For a WMN, direct collisions can be minimized by short propagation and carrier sense times. Thus, in this paper we only consider hidden terminal collision while neglecting direct collisions. To reduce or eliminate hidden terminal collision, code division multiple access (CDMA) protocols have been introduced. The collision-free property is guaranteed by the use of spread spectrum communication techniques and the proper assignment of orthogonal codes. Such codes share the fixed channel capacity allocated to the network in the design stage. Thus, it is very important to minimize the number of codes while achieving a proper transmission quality level in CDMA WMNs. In this paper, an efficient heuristic code assignment algorithm for eliminating hidden terminal collision in CDMA WMNs with general topology.
We propose an efficient block least-mean-square (BLMS) adaptive algorithm, in conjunction with error control coding, for direct-sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems. The proposed adaptive receiver incorporates decision feedback detection and channel encoding in order to improve the performance of the standard LMS algorithm in convolutionally coded systems. The BLMS algorithm involves two modes of operation: (i) The training mode where an uncoded training sequence is used for initial filter tap-weights adaptation, and (ii) the decision-directed where the filter weights are adapted, using the BLMS algorithm, after decoding/encoding operation. It is shown that the proposed adaptive receiver structure is able to compensate for the signal-tonoise ratio (SNR) loss incurred due to the switching from uncoded training mode to coded decision-directed mode. Our results show that by using the proposed adaptive receiver (with decision feedback block adaptation) one can achieve a much better performance than both the coded LMS with no decision feedback employed. The convergence behavior of the proposed BLMS receiver is simulated and compared to the standard LMS with and without channel coding. We also examine the steady-state bit-error rate (BER) performance of the proposed adaptive BLMS and standard LMS, both with convolutional coding, where we show that the former is more superior than the latter especially at large SNRs ($SNR\;\geq\;9\;dB$).

As a sequel to Part 1, the performance characteristics of the cell averaging (CA), greatest of (GO), and smallest of (SO) constant false alarm rate (CFAR) processors in nonhomogeneous environment are obtained and compared when receiving antenna diversity is employed in the pseudonoise (PN) code acquisition of direct-sequence code division multiple access (DS/CDMA) systems. Unlike in homogeneous environment, the GO CFAR processor is observed to exhibit the best performance in nonhomogeneous environment, with the CA CFAR processor performing the second best.

In this paper, a new design of a triple-erroe-correcting (TEC) Reed-Solomon decoder is presented based on direct decoding method which is more efficient for the case of relatively small error correction capability. The proposed decoder requires only 9 GF(2m) multipliers in obtaining the error-locator polynomial and the error-evaluator polynomial, whereas other decoders needs 24 multipliers. Thus, the attractive feature of this decoder is its remarkable simplicity from the point of view of implementation. Futhermore, the proposed TEC Reed-Solomon decoder has very simple control circuit and short decoding delay. Therefore this decoder can be implemented by simple hardware and also save buffer memory which stores received sequence.

In this Paper, the matched filter for searching initial synchronization in DSSS (direct sequence spread spectrum) receiver is studied. The matched filter with a single data flow path is described which can be presented by HDL (Hardware Description Language). In order to improve the processing time of operations for the filter, equations are arranged to represent two data flow paths and the associated hardware model is proposed. The model has an architecture based on parallelism and pipeline for fast processing, in which two data flow paths with a series of memory, multiplier and accumulator are placed in parallel. The performance of the model is analyzed and compared with the matched filter with a single data flow path.

In this paper, we propose two different types of cooperative transmission protocols, referred to as spatial multiplexing with receive diversity (SMRD), that are bandwidth-efficient. We show that the BER performance can be significantly improved with a proper design of SMRD protocol under the AF (Amplify-and-Forward) and the DF (Decode-and-Forward) modes of relaying, when there is no interference among all symbols transmitted in the same time slot. BER analysis and our simulation result show that the proposed transmission protocol achieves a significant gain over no-cooperation (direct transmission) without any bandwidth expansion.
In view of the speed control characteristics of induction traction motors and the problems of direct torque control (DTC) algorithms in current applications, this paper presents a DTC algorithm characterized by a symmetrical polygon flux control and a closed loop power control in the constant-torque base speed region and constant-power field-weakening region of induction traction motors. This algorithm only needs to add a stator flux control algorithm to the traditional DTC structures. This has the benefit of simplicity, while maintaining the features of traditional algorithms such as a rapid dynamic response, uncomplicated control circuit, reduced dependence on motor parameters, etc. In addition, it obtains a smoother flux trajectory that is conducive to improvement of the harmonic elimination capability, the switching frequency utilization as well as the torque and power performance in the field-weakening region. The effectiveness and feasibility of this DTC algorithm are demonstrated by both theoretical analysis and experimental results.

The performance of turbo codes is investigated in the direct detection optical PPM channel. We assume that an ideal photon counter is used as an optical detector and that the channel has background noise as well as quantum noise. Resulting channel model is M-ary PPM Poisson channel. We propose the structure of the transmitter and receiver for applying turbo codes to this channel. We also derive turbo decoding algorithm for the proposed coding system, by modifying the calculation of the branch metric inherent in the original turbo decoding algorithm developed for the AWGN channel. Analytical bounds are derived and computer simulation is performed to analyze the performance of the proposed coding scheme, and the results are compared with the performances of Reed-Solomon codes and convolutional codes.

In this paper, we design and implement an indoor wireless modem using small signal of ISM band regulation, which can tranceive reliable data streams. We use direct sequence spead spectrum (DS-SS) signaling with synchronous BPSK and QPSK modulation, convolutional coding with viterbi decoding. The radio frequency module uses frequency devision duplexing in 900 MHz band, and the digital module is implemented with FPGAs for the purpose fo ASIC design. The perfomrance of our own acquistion and tracking circuit consisting digital matched filter and decision logic is proved by experiments, and the possibility of file transfer at indoor environment with the entrie system that the modem is connected the PC through RS-232C port is verified.
