  • A mathematical model was written for simulating the removal of phenol from wastewater in enzyme-loaded membrane reactor (EMR). The numerical simulation program was developed so as to predict the degradation of phenol through an EMR. Numerical model proves to be effective in searching for optimal operating conditions and creating an optimal microenvironment for the biocatalyst in order to optimize productivity. In this study, several dimensionless parameters such as Thiele Modulus (${\phi}^2$, dimensionless Michaelis-Menten constant ($\xi$), Peclet number (Pe) were introduced to simplify their effects on system efficiency. In particular, the study of phenol conversion at different feed compositions shows that low phenol concentrations and high Thiele Modulus values lead to higher reactant degradation.

  • It is important to understand correctly a CHF under low flow condition for the purpose of enhancing the reactor safety and performance in the LWRs. The CHF experiments have been carried out for an internally heated vertical annulus in RCS loop facility. The experimental conditions cover ranges of pressure from 1.82 to 12.08 MPa, mass flux from 300 to 550kg/$m^2$. s and inlet subcooling of 210kJ/kg. The CHF data decrease with increasing pressure at high value of mass flux. For mass flux of about 300kg/$m^2$. s, the CHF rue little influenced by pressure. The CHF data are correlated well by using the dimensionless heat flux and dimensionless mass flux for a fixed inlet subcooling except the data group of 12.08 MPa. It seems that the Doerffer correlation and Katto correlation overestimate the CHF for low pressure and lower value of mass flux within this experimental ranges. The Bowling correlation gives a better prediction than the other two correlations.

  • The performance of a set of low-cost optical components used for measuring the optical density of PM particles was evaluated in the present study. To this end, the set of low-cost optical components was replaced with that of general optical components used to measure the PM optical density under identical experimental conditions. The optical densities measured from the set of general optical components were then compared to those obtained from the set of low-cost optical components. While the optical density is measured, another key parameter, the dimensionless extinction constant of PM particles (which is needed to optically measure the PM concentration) was also determined in the present study. The experimental results indicate that the optical density and PM concentration measurements performed by low-cost optical components are feasible, producing trackable variations in the OD and concentrations compared to values obtained from the set of general optical components.

  • A numerical study on the similarity of the developing laminar flows between in a straight duct rotating about an axis perpendicular to that of the duct and in a stationary curved duct was carried out. In order to clarify the analogy of two flows, dimensionless parameters K/sub LR/ = Re/(equation omitted) and Rossby number, Ro, in a rotating straight duct were used as a set corresponding to Dean number K/sub LC/ = Re/(equation omitted), and curvature ratio, λ, in a stationary curved duct. For the large values of Ro and λ, it is shown that the flow field satisfies the 'asymptotic invariance property', that is, there are strong quantitative similarities between the two flows such as flow patterns, friction factors, and maximum axial velocity magnitudes for the same values of K/sub LR/ and K/sub LC/ if they are correlated with dimensionless axial distances Z/sub R/ = z/(equation omitted) for a rotating duct flow and Z/sub C/ = z/(equation omitted) for a stationary curved duct flow.

  • Local heat transfer coefficients were measured on semi-cylinders on which a circular water jet impinged in crossflow. The ratio of the semi-cylinder's diameter and the nozzle outlet diameter were varied parametrically, as were the Reynolds number and the supplementary water heights. The measurements showed that the circumferential distribution of the heat transfer coefficient peaked at the stagnation point. For a fixed supplementary water height, the peak heat transfer coefficient was not depend on the curvature of test specimen(d/D). Optimum height of supplementary water which brought about the augmentation of heat transfer at the stagnation point was S/D=1. The Nusselt number decreased as the circumferential distance or angle increased. The circumferential distribution of dimensionless heat transfer (Nu/Nus) was independent of d/D ($d/D{\geq}8.33$), but for the d/D<8.33, it was depended on d/D. At a fixed angle of specimen, dimensionless heat transfer (Nu/Nus) decreased as the ratio d/D increased. The extent of the decrease between d/D=6.67 and 8.33 was markedly greater than that between d/D=8.33 and 10, or d/D=10 and 11.67.

  • This research deals with the prediction of compressive strength of normal and high strength concrete using neural networks. The compressive strength was modeled as a function of eight variables: quantities of cement, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate, micro-silica, water and super-plasticizer, maximum size of coarse aggregate, fineness modulus of fine aggregate. Two networks, one using raw variables and another using grouped dimensionless variables were constructed, trained and tested using available experimental data, covering a large range of concrete compressive strengths. The neural network models were compared with regression models. The neural networks based model gave high prediction accuracy and the results demonstrated that the use of neural networks in assessing compressive strength of concrete is both practical and beneficial. The performance of model using the grouped dimensionless variables is better than the prediction using raw variables.

  • This paper presents the possibilities of adapting artificial neural networks (ANNs) to predict the dimensionless parameters related to the maximum contact pressures of an elasticity problem. The plane symmetric double receding contact problem for a rigid stamp and two elastic strips having different elastic constants and heights is considered. The external load is applied to the upper elastic strip by means of a rigid stamp and the lower elastic strip is bonded to a rigid support. The problem is solved under the assumptions that the contact between two elastic strips also between the rigid stamp and the upper elastic strip are frictionless, the effect of gravity force is neglected and only compressive normal tractions can be transmitted through the interfaces. A three layered ANN with backpropagation (BP) algorithm is utilized for prediction of the dimensionless parameters related to the maximum contact pressures. Training and testing patterns are formed by using the theory of elasticity with integral transformation technique. ANN predictions and theoretical solutions are compared and seen that ANN predictions are quite close to the theoretical solutions. It is demonstrated that ANNs is a suitable numerical tool and if properly used, can reduce time consumed.

  • The dual reciprocity boundary element method (DRBEM) is used to solve the Graetz problem of laminar flow inside circular duct. In this method the domain integral tenn of boundary integral equation resulting from source term of governing equation is transformed into equivalent boundary-only integrals by using the radial basis interpolation function, and therefore complicate domain discretization procedure Is completely removed. Velocity profile is obtained by solving the momentum equation first and then, using this velocities as Input data, energy equation Is solved to get the temperature profile by advancing from duct entrance through the axial direction marching scheme. DRBEM solution is tested for the uniform temperature and heat flux boundary condition cases. Local Nusselt number, mixed mean temperature and temperature profile inside duct at each dimensionless axial location are obtained and compared with exact solutions for the accuracy test Solutions arc in good agreement at the entry region as well as fully developed region of circular duct, and their accuracy are verified from error analysis.

  • Structures of interfacial waves in nearly-horizontal countercurrent stratified air-water flow have been measured by means of a needle contact method. Based upon a statistical analysis for the liquid film distribution, statistical properties of the waves such as mean film thickness, mean wave amplitude and rms value of the wave fluctuation have been calculated. The results show that the film distribution can be described by a Gaussian probability density function for the three-dimensional wave regime. It is also indicated that the mean film thick ness and the rms value of the wave fluctuation increase as gas and liquid flow rates are increased in countercurrent two-phase flow. The dimensionless intensity of the wave fluctuation may be regarded as a function of the Froude number and the dimensionless mean film thickness.

  • In order to prevent the decay heat removal system from failure due to air entrainment or free surface vortex in the piping system, a set of simulating experiments for the midloop operation of nuclear power plant was performed. Through these experiments, a relation between the dimensionless numbers, such as submergence H/d, froude number, reynolds number, was found. However, the effect of reynolds number was negligible for the operation conditions of Nuclear power plant. It was also found that the perturbation of the system by the disturbance such as pump start, valve operation, etc., has a strong effect on the free surface vortex. Furthermore, from a view point of reactor safery, a modified inlet device of reducer type is strongly recommendable for the prevention of air entrainment.
