Recently, Internet service providers are offering triple play service which combines voice and video services with the existing high speed Internet service under the common network infrastructure of IP protocol, so that they can create more benefit from operating a single network architecture. In line with this movement in the convergence of network and services, in this work we propose a bandwidth dimensioning method for the subscriber network of the IP network at flow level. To that purpose, let us propose a series of bandwidth dimensioning methods: bandwidth for best effort service only, bandwidth dimensioning for premium services, and bandwidth dimensioning schemes for the premium Internet services as well as the best effort service which comprise the TPS. Our link dimensioning method is based on the flow level that incorporates the flow blocking probability as a measure of grade of services(GoS), and investigates the characteristics of the proposed methods via extensive numerical experiments. After that, let us carry out a simulation experiment concerning the delay and loss performance of the packet scheduling for the premium services (QoS) using the bandwidth designed by our proposed method, via which the packet level quality of service (QoS) for the proposed link dimensioning method can be observed.
In this work, we propose an analytic framework for dimensioning the link capacity of broadband access networks which provide universal broadband access services to a diverse kind of customers such as patient and impatient customers. The proposed framework takes into account the flow-level quality of service (QoS) of a connection as well as the packet-level QoS, via which a simple and systematic provisioning and operation of the network are provided. To that purpose, we first discuss the necessity of flow-aware network dimensioning by reviewing the networking technologies of the current and future access network. Next, we propose an analytic model for dimensioning the link capacity for an access node of broadband convergence networks which takes into account both the flow and packet level QoS requirements. By carrying out extensive numerical experiment for the proposed model assuming typical parameters that represent real network environment, the validity of the proposed method is assessed.

In this paper, we propose an analytic method for dimensioning of traffic descriptors at the leaky bucket-based UPC for VBR MPEG video traffic on ATM networks. We analytically derive cell violation probabilities at the UPC by using the proposed scene-based video traffic model, and then we show that it is possible to select sets of traffic descriptors that have the same required violation probability. For two example video traces, numerical results show that our proposed traffic descriptors dimensioning method can approximate well the simulation-based traffic control results of the real video traces. When the effective bandwidth allocation method of an ON/OFF model is used for the call admission control in the networks, we present an efficient traffic descriptor selection method by studying the allocated bandwidth to each possible traffic descriptor set.

Wireless Internet is the network which provides wireless access in order to serve the Internet connections and data communication through the mobile handsets. To get efficient wireless access to the Internet, we need the WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) gateway that performs protocol translation and contents conversion between two different networks. We need the capacity dimensioning of the WAP gateway system in order to provide the wireless Internet service stably and cost-effectively. We also need the traffic engineering methods including traffic modelling and forecasting for the economical facility investment. The existing method of WAP gateway capacity dimensioning was intuitive and qualitative. But in this paper, we deal with the capacity dimensioning analytically and quantitatively on the basis of WAP traffic description parameters and traffic forecasting method.

Wireless Sensor Networks have extensively been utilized for ambient data collection from simple linear structures to dense tiered deployments. Issues related to optimal resource allocation still persist for simplistic deployments including linear and hierarchical networks. In this work, we investigate the case of dimensioning parameters for linear and tiered wireless sensor network deployments with notion of providing extended lifetime and reliable data delivery over extensive infrastructures. We provide a single consolidated reference for selection of intrinsic sensor network parameters like number of required nodes for deployment over specified area, network operational lifetime, data aggregation requirements, energy dissipation concerns and communication channel related signal reliability. The dimensioning parameters have been analyzed in a pipeline monitoring scenario using ZigBee communication platform and subsequently referred with analytical models to ensure the dimensioning process is reflected in real world deployment with minimum resource consumption and best network connectivity. Concerns over data aggregation and routing delay minimization have been discussed with possible solutions. Finally, we propose a node placement strategy based on a dynamic programming model for achieving reliable received signals and consistent application in structural health monitoring with multi hop and long distance connectivity.

B-ISDN link dimensioning is often known as a difficult problem because of the characteristics of Asynchronous Transfer Mode(ATM) such as various Quality of Services of different service requirements, and the statistical multiplexing resulting from virtual path/virtual circuit connections. In this paper, we propose a nonlinear integer optimization model for dimensioning B-ISDN considering the statistical multiplexing effects of virtual path connections(VPCs) and the modularity of resources allocated to a transmission link. The algorithm based on the simultaneous linear approximation technique as well as some numerical results will be also presented.

At the initial deployment of B-ISDN, the heterogeneity of services and the bandwidth requirement make dimensioning of B-ISDN much more complicated than the dimensioning of homogeneous circuit or packet switched networks. Therefore B-ISDN must be extended gradually according to future telecommunication technology or service demands. In this paper, we propose a mathematical formulation for dimensioning problem of B-ISDN extension, considering the characteristics of ATM(Asynchronous Transfer Mode) such as various quality of services, the statistical multiplexing effects of VPCs(Virtual Path Connections) and the modularity of transmission links allocated when new B-ISDN nodes are given. The algorithm based on the simultaneous linear approximation technique and Lagrangian relaxation method and some numerical results are also presented.

The buffering is a promising solution to resolve the contention problem in optical network. we study the packet loss probability and the dimensioning of optical buffer using a Fiber Delay Line for variable length packet. In this paper, we study the relation between the granularity and the loss of FDL buffer in Single-Stage FDL buffer and propose the Single-Bundle Multi-Stage FDL buffer. The Multi-Stage FDL buffer is too early yet to apply to the current backbone network, considering the current technology in view of costs. but we assume that the above restriction will be resolved in these days. The appropriate number of delay and pass line for a dimensioning is based on a amount of occupied time by packets. Once more another multi-stage FDL buffer is proposed, Split-Bundle multi-stage FDL buffer. The Split-Bundle ms-FDL buffer is more feasible for a FDL buffer structure, considering not only a size of switching matrix but also a bulk of switching element. its feasibility will be demonstrated from a loss probability.

Current existing network dimensioning method simply relies on long-time measurement data or uses average traffic characteristics of users. In this paper, we propose an efficient network dimensioning method for DiffServ over MPLS networks. First, User's SLA information is distributed from edge nodes to core nodes according to the proposed algorithm. Then at each link, class-based capacity planning is performed. For capacity planning, we proposed sets of network design parameters for DiffServ classes and bandwidth allocation schemes that are most suitable for each class. We have developed a DiffServ over MPLS network design tool using the proposed method. Simulation results show that our proposed method is able to design efficiently the required class link resources.
