In the recent International Maritime Organization's (IMOs) Maritime Safety Committee's 93rd session, the International Chamber of Shipping and International Parcel Tankers Association addressed marine fuel oil quality problems: increasing diluents in marine fuel oil, ignition in engine rooms due to the low flash point of fuel oil, and marine fuel oils that can damage marine engines. To deal with these marine fuel oil quality problems, the International Maritime Organization secretariat appointed the worlds marine fuel oil monitoring institute and constituted a correspondence group to determine the fuel oil quality required by MARPOL Annex VI regulation 14.8 (sulfur content less than 0.5%). In this study, basic research that can help with responding to marine fuel quality issues and the IMO's work is conducted. In order to perform this basic research, the off-spec ratio related to the fuel oil quality standard (ISO 8217:2012), density distribution tendency, gross specific energy, and correlation between components in the fuel oil are analyzed through actual marine fuel oil (residual marine fuel) data from the Port of Singapore.
Ultraviolet curable coatings are often used to protect the surface of polymer materials exposed to the ultraviolet radiation. However, the adhesion of epoxy acrylate on poly(vinyl chloride) and the UV curable coating on polystyren are poor. The objective of this work was to improve the adhesion of coating according to various formulations of the reactive diluents and finishing methods using the photografting of multifunctional acrylate and the surface activation on polymer surface impregnated a phtoinitiator. The addition of Tripropylene glycole diacrlate in the formulation of coating results in the improvement of adhesion of coating due to the flexibility. But the increase of the crosslinking density which results from the oxidation of surface during the exposure of UV radiation caused the loss of adhesion of coating exept the photografting method. In the trimethylolpropane triacrylate the improvement of adhesion are considerable due to the chemical bond between multifundtional acrylate and surface. From this work we expect to achieve the varity and functionality in the formulation of coating according to the photografting and surface activating of polymer.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of growing stages of the Korean Native Striped Bull (KNSB) on the freezability and fertility of frozen-thawed semen. First, we investigated the total motility (TM) and progressive motility (PM) according to the diluent used for semen freezing. Second, we examined the effect of the age of KNSB on semen volume, TM and PM of fresh and frozen-thawed semen. Third, we examined the effect of frozen semen from the different age of KNSB on the $in-vitro$ fertilization rate, and the artificial insemination pregnancy rate. The diluents used in this experiment were Triladyl$^{(R)}$ and Tris-egg yolk extender (EYE). Semen was collected from 5 KNSB in the growing stage (15 months) and 5 adult KNSB (36 months). When Triladyl or Tris-EYE extender was used for semen freezing, there was no difference of the mean TM and the mean PM. However, the mean TM was significantly higher in Bull No. 1885 than Bull No. 4283 ($p$ <0.05). The mean volume of semen collected from the 15-month-old bulls (2.3 ml) was significantly lower ($p$ <0.05) than that from the 36-month-old bulls (5.0 ml). The mean semen concentration was similar for the 15-month-old ($2.1{\times}10^9$ spermatozoa/ml) and 36-month-old ($1.8{\times}10^9$ spermatozoa/ml) bulls. For the 15-month-old and 36-month-old bulls, the mean TM of fresh semen were 93.7% and 88.3%, respectively, and the mean PM were 97.0% and 88.3%, respectively; the 15-month-old bulls showed a particularly high PM ($p$ <0.05). For the 15-month-old and 36-month-old bulls, the mean TM (56.0% and 58.0%, respectively) and the mean PM (64.0% and 70.7%, respectively) of frozen-thawed semen did not differ. The development rates of embryos after $in-vitro$ fertilization and the pregnancy rate after artificial insemination using frozen-thawed semen did not differ according to the bull's age. In summary, semen volume differed according to the bull's age, but semen concentration and survival rate, the $in-vitro$ fertilization rate, and the pregnancy rate did not differ according to the stripe bull's age. Accordingly, semen from bulls in the growing stage can be collected and frozen for the preservation and multiplication of rare livestock.
Photo-catalytic products have been widely used at home and hospital to prevent bacteria, virus and fungus. Activities of anti-bacteria, anti-viruses and anti-fungi are based upon direct contact of crystals and particles of titanium dioxide with pathogens, into which titanium is catalyzed by photo. Those antimicrobial activities of the photo-catalytic titanium dioxide have been proved in vitro. However, in vivo tests of those activities have not been carried out on dog skin. Aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activities of the catalytic titanium dioxide in vivo. Ten beagle dogs were divided into two groups. One group was sprayed with 10ml of titanium dioxide(1 mg/ml) whereas the other was not. The treated dogs were exposed under the sunlight for 120 min. A set of three hairs was taken 15, 30, 60 and 120 min after the exposure and the bacteria contaminated in hairs were amplified in, Muller Hilton broth at $35^{\circ}C{\pm}1$ for 3 h. The supernatant of the bacterial culture was diluted 1 : 10 in phosphafe-buffered saline. One milliliter of the diluents was transferred into triphenyltetrazolium medium(TTC) and incubated at $35^{\circ}C{\pm}1$ for 2 days. The number of bacteria was counted. The number of bacteria colonies was decreased compared to control group. To further investigate the longevity effect of titanium dioxide, the dogs were kept in indoor without sun light for 6 and 12 h, 1, 2, 3, 7, 14 days after exposure of the chemical during each 15, 30, 60 min. The number of bacteria colony in 1ml was counted. The number of bacterial colonies was decreased. Treated group is exposured by sun light during 15 min, the longevity effect of titanium dioxide is continued by 1 week. Treated group is exposured by sun light during 30, 60 min, the longevity effect of titanium dioxide is continued over 2 weeks. These data indicated that the photo-catalytic titanium dioxide may be used for prevent bacteria on dog skin.

Oxy-methane nonpremixed flames diluted with $CO_2$ were investigated to clarify impact of radiation heat loss and chemical effects of additional $CO_2$ to oxidizer stream on flame extinction. Flame stability maps were presented with functional dependencies of critical diluents mole fraction upon global strain rate at several oxidizer stream temperatures in $CH_4-O_2/N_2$, $CH_4-O_2/CO_2$, and $CH_4-O_2/CO_2/N_2$ counterflow flames. The effects of radiation heat loss on the critical diluent mole fractions for flame extinction are not significant even at low strain rate in nonpremixed $CH_4-O_2/N_2$ diffusion flame, whereas those are significant at low strain rate and are negligible at high strain rate (> $200s^{-1}$) in $CH_4-O_2/CO_2$ and $CH_4-O_2/CO_2/N_2$ counterflow flames. Chemical effects of additional $CO_2$ to oxidizer stream on the flame extinction curves were appreciable in both $CH_4-O_2/CO_2$ and $CH_4-O_2/CO_2/N_2$ flames. A scaling analysis based on asymptotic solution of stretched flame extinction was applied. A specific radical index, which could reflect the OH population in main reaction zone via controlling the mixture composition in the oxidizer stream, was identified to quantify the chemical kinetic contribution to flame extinction. A good correlation of predicted extinction limits to those calculated numerically were obtained via the ratio between radical indices and oxidizer Lewis numbers for the target and baseline flames. This offered an effective approach to estimate extinction strain rate of nonpremixed oxy-methane flames permitting air infiltration when the baseline flame was taken to nonpremixed $CH_4-O_2/N_2$ flame.

To preserve genetic materials, cryopreservation of the semen from live animals is the main technique to establish cryo-banking system which could be used for artificial insemination and embryo transfer. However, the population of Korean black goat (KBG) becomes to dwindle in number and is now faced genetic erosion by crossbreeding with non-native breeds in small KBG farms. In this study, simple freezing method was used to preserve frozen semen from KBG using spermatozoa of cauda epididymis (CE) and electro-stimulated semen (ES). The negative effects of seminal plasma on fresh sperm was confirmed using precipitation test of Triladyl egg yolk diluent and sperm viability after thawing was compared between CE and ES spermatozoa. When seminal plasma of fresh ES semen was washed with semen washing media (SWM), the rates of live sperm shown no significant difference between CE and ES spermatozoa before freezing. However, the survival rate of frozen/thawed CE sperm was higher than ES ($74.6{\pm}10.6%$ vs $53.8{\pm}5.2%$) with significant difference (p < 0.05). The results of longevity test on frozen/thawed sperm from CE showed healthier sperm than ES. Therefore, spermatozoa from CE could be used for cryo-banking system in KBG lines. The more studies are needed to increase survival rate of ES semen.
In this study, we dedicated to optimize the process for a reactive diluent for epoxy resin of improved chemical resistance by using cardanol, a component of natural oil of cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL). The central composite design (CCD) model of response surface methodology (RSM) was used for the optimization. The quantitative factors for CCD-RSM were the cardanol/ECH mole ratio, reaction time, and reaction temperature. The yield, epoxy equivalent, and viscosity were selected as response values. Basic experiments were performed to design the reaction surface analysis. The ranges of quantitative factors were determined as 2~4, 4~8 h, and 100~140 ℃ for the cardanol/ECH reaction mole ratio, reaction time, and reaction temperature, respectively. From the result of CCD-RSM, the optimum conditions were determined as 3.33, 6.18 h, and 120 ℃ for the cardanol/ECH reaction mole ratio, reaction time, and reaction temperature, respectively. At these conditions, the yield, epoxy equivalence, and viscosity were estimated as 100%, 429.89 g/eq., and 41.65 cP, respectively. In addition, the experimental results show that the error rate was less than 0.3%, demonstrating the validity of optimization.

Chicken spermatozoa have the ability to survive in low-temperature environments; however, the effects of low temperature on sperm motility and acrosome damage have not been studied in detail. The present study investigated semen longevity following dilution of rooster semen with Beltsville Poultry Semen Extender (BPSE) and Lake extender in preservation vessels (1.5 mL e-tube and 0.5 mL straw). Spermatozoa motility in the closed-type vessel (0.5 mL straw) was higher than that in the 1.5 mL e-tube on day 3 of preservation (68.6±3.1% vs. 22.1±5.7%). The motility of rooster semen diluted with BPSE in 0.5 mL straw was also higher than that of the Lake extender on day 3 of preservation (57.7±5.6% vs. 37.7±5.4%). Furthermore, acrosome intactness was higher in 0.5 mL straw than in the 1.5 mL e-tube, and the rate of acrosome cap damage increased with preservation days. The present study demonstrates that a closed 0.5-mL straw vessel could be used for low-temperature semen preservation, with an increased motility rate and acrosome integrity in fresh rooster semen.

Five different composition UV-cured poly(urethane acrylate-co-acrylic acid) (PU-co-AA) films have been prepared by reacting isophorone diisocyanate(IPDI), polycaprolactone triol(PCLT), 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate(HEA), and different weight ratio trimethylolpropane triacrylate(TMPTA) and acrylic acid(AA) as diluents, and characterized using a Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR). The adhesion properties onto the stainless steel, morphology, mechanical hardness, and electrical property of UV-cured PU-co-AA films were investigated as a function of acrylic acid(AA) content. All the PU-co-AA films are structure-less and the molecular ordering and packing density decreased with increasing content of AA due to the flexible structure and -COOH side chains in AA. The crosscut test showed that PU-co-AA films without AA and with low content of AA showed 0% adhesion(0B) and the adhesion of PU-co-AA films in the range of 40-50% AA increased dramatically as the content of AA increases. The pull-off measurements showed that the adhesion force of PU-co-AA films to stainless steel substrate varied from 6 to 31 kgf /$cm^2$ and increased linearly with increasing AA content. The mechanical hardness also decreased as the content of AA increases. This may come from relatively linear and flexible structure in AA and low crystallinity in PU-co-AA films with higher content of AA. The higher AA-containing PU-co-AA films showed higher dielectric constant due to the increase of polarization by introducing AA monomer. In conclusion, the physical properties of UV-cured PU-co-AA films are strongly dependent upon the content of AA and the incorporation of AA in polyurethane acrylate is very useful way to increase the adhesion strength of UV-curable polymers on the stainless steel substrate.

Cryopreservation of germ cells from genetically proven animals could be a source of restoration tools from the risk of extinction or disappearance of wanted characteristics. Using frozen semen, the genetic gains of Korean native cattle have been increased greatly for 70 years. The preservation of genetic resources as a form of frozen semen straw has limited availability due to the numbers. To circumvent this weakness of frozen semen, we tested two re-freezing methods with different initial thawing temperatures using frozen Korean proven semen and rare breed semen from albino, black and chikso breeders. It has been known that human sperm could resist to cryo-damages by repeated freeze-thaw cycles, but not for Korean proven bulls number (KPN) or for rare breeds. Total 7 frozen semem from brindled(2), black(1), Korean Albino(2) and KPN(1) bulls were used for our research. After thawing straws under $5^{\circ}C/2min$ or $37^{\circ}C/40sec$ with low temperature water bath and thermo jug, spermatozoa were re-diluted with triladyl diluents after first thawing and re-frozen. Sperm motilities were compared between animals and treated groups after re-thawing. Mean values of motility and viability of refrozen/thawed sperm for expansion of the number of straws were significantly higher in $5^{\circ}C$ than in $37^{\circ}C$ (P < 0.05). However, the activity of viable sperm thawed at $5^{\circ}C$ was significantly decreased before refreezing. It is estimated that re-freezing of frozen semen from rare Korean native cattle is possible with resistant properties of survived spermatozoa.
