  • This paper reports the application of field tests to weak ground. In this study, field and laboratory tests were performed in the west seashore of KOREA(Ildo, Sore, Kunsan, Youngam). Applied tests are standard penetration test, cone penetration test, dilatometer test, field vane test, unconsolidated undrained test, oedometer test and other fundametal material properties tests. The results of in-situ test are used to estimate soil types and undrained shear strengths of five clay local deposits. SPT results showed low reliability and FVT war also demonstrated the best field test to weak clayey deposits.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the behavior of the welding distortion of the 9% Ni steel weldment involving the martensitic phase transformation. In order to do it, an uncoupled thermal-mechanical finite element (FE) model was developed to evaluate the effect of the phase transformation on the distortion for the weldment. High speed quenching dilatometer tests were employed to define the variations of the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) with the fraction of the martensitic phase transformation, which strongly depends on the cooling speed after welding. Comprehensive experiments for the welding distortion of the weldment with reference to welding heat input were employed to verify the FE model.

  • In this study, we fabricated tubular ceramic support for segmented-in-series solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) by using MAO(MgAl-stabilized ) as main material and activated carbon as pore former. Thermal expansion properties of ceramic support with different amounts of activated carbon were analyzed by using dilatometer to decide a suitable sintering temperature. The tubular ceramic supports with different amounts of activated carbon (15, 20, 30wt.%) were fabricated by the extrusion technique. After sintering at $1400^{\circ}C$ for 2h, cross section and surface morphology of tubular ceramic support were analyzed by using SEM image. Also, the porosity, mechanical property, gas permeability of tubular ceramic supports was measured. Based on these results, we established the suitable fabrication technique of tubular ceramic support for segmented-in-series SOFC.

  • A metallurgical model for the phase transformation kinetics at Coarsened Grain Heat Affected Zone(CGHAZ) on the basis of Johnson-Mehl-Avrami equation(JMA equation) was proposed. In this model, the effect of prior austenite grain size on the transformation and the morphological changes of ferrite were considered. Isothermal dilatometer tests were performed to determine the effect of prior austenite grain size (AGS) on the austenite decomposition to ferrite and pearlite in a plain carbon steel. By comparing the calculated volume fraction with measured data, the reliability of the developed model was discussed.

  • The kinetics of sintering of Co-Fe materials was studied. The main objective was to establish the effects of iron content and sintering parameters on the microstructure and phase composition of the as-sintered material. Specimens containing from 3 to 25 wt.% iron were sintered in a dilatometer for one hour at 900, 1000 and $1150^{\circ}C$ in either hydrogen or nitrogen atmosphere. The length of specimens during the heating, hold at temperature and cooling steps were monitored to establish the sample's shrinkage. Microstructural observations were carried out on polished and etched transverse sections which were also subjected to the X-ray phase analysis.

  • A new spiro-ortho carbonate containing bulky side group, 3,9-di-(9,10-dihydro-9,10-ethanoanthracenyl)-1,5,7,11-tetraoxaspiro-5,5-undecane 4 was prepared and polymerized with BF3${\cdot}$etherate as initiator. Densities of monomer and polymer were measured using dilatometer and it was demonstrated that the bicyclic monomer 4 underwent expansion on polymerization.

  • The effects of TiO2 addition as a nucleating agent on the cordierite glass-ceramics were investigated. The glass compositiion was stoichiometric cordierite composition of 13.7MgO-34.9Al2O3-51.4SiO2(wt%), and TiO2 as a nucleating agent was added by 5, 10 and 15wt% in addition. The optimum amount of TiO2 addition and appropriate heat treatment schedule were determined by using dilatometer, DTA, XRDA and SEM. The composition containing 10wt% TiO2 was proved to be the best among the investigated compositions. And the optimum heat treatment schedule was 840℃-2h for the nucleation and 1140℃-2h for the crystallization. The properties were as follows. The crystallinity was ∼75%, thermal expansion coefficient 33×10-7/℃(25∼700℃), dielectric constant 7.6(1KHz) and Vicker's hardness 5.1GPa.

  • When barium titanate was synthesized in soild-solid reaction the abnormal expansion occurred from 900$^{\circ}C$ to 1100$^{\circ}C$. The equi-molecular mixture of BaCO3 and TiO2 was sintered from 800$^{\circ}C$ to 1300$^{\circ}C$ on the condition of air, vacuum and CO2 atmosphere. After that the specimens were tested closely with XRD, Dilatometer, SEM and EDS. The result indicated that; 1. The crystal phase which was concerned with expansion of BaTiO3 was Ba2TiO4 as the intermediate crystal phase. 2. The formation of Ba2TiO4 was affected by the firing atmosphere. 3. The expansion occurred when BaTiO3 changed to Ba2TiO4 and pore also expanded by the expansion of BaTiO3 body just as the model of expansion.

  • The hetero junction on dielectrics and ferrite for LTCC was prepared by using NiCuZn ferrite. The shrinkage behaviour of ferrite tapes in combination with a dielectric tape was investigated. The characteristics of NiCuZn ferrite were investigated using XRD (X-ray diffractometer), Dilatometer, FE-SEM (Field emission scanning electron microscope), EDS (Energy dispersive spectrometer). NiCuZn ferrite calcined at $700^{\circ}C$ had a good apparent density and initial permeability of magnetic properties. The shrinkage rate of the NCZF700 ferrite and dielectric material was similar. The multilayer revealed dense, uniform morphologies with excellent interface quality. Diffusion of hetero junction such as dielectric and ferrite was not occuring at $900^{\circ}C$.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the thermal expansion characteristics of injectable ther-moplasticized gutta-perchas and a Resilon. The materials investigated are Obtura gutta-percha, Diadent gutta-percha, E&Q Gutta-percha Bar and Epiphany (Resilon). The temperature at the heating chamber orifice of an Obtura II syringe and the extruded gutta-percha from the tip of both 23- and 20-gauge needle was determined using a Digital thermometer. A cylindrical ceramic mold was fabricated for thermal expansion test, which was 27 mm long, with an internal bore diameter of 3 mm and an outer diameter of 10 mm. The mold was filled with each experimental material and barrel ends were closed with two ceramic plunger. The samples in ceramic molds were heated in a dilatometer over the temperature range from $25^{\circ}C$ to $75^{\circ}C$. From the change of specimen length as a function of temperature, the coefficients of thermal expansion were deter-mined. There was no statistical difference between four materials in the thermal expansion in the range from $35^{\circ}C$ to $55^{\circ}C$ (p > 0.05). However, Obtura Gutta-percha showed smaller thermal expansion than Diadent and Metadent ones from $35^{\circ}C$ to $75^{\circ}C$ (p < 0.05). The thermal expansion of Epiphany was similar to those of the other gutta-percha groups.
