  • This paper reports experiments and analysis work done to find out the cause of Y parallex for stereo pairs of KOMPSAT-2 images and means to improve the Y parallex problem. We could conclude that the Y parallex problem was caused by resampling errors of KOMPSAT-2 PANchromatic bands, induced by the process of warping PANchromatic band with reference to multispectral bands. We could also conclude that a rigorous warping process could improve resampling of KOMPSAT-2 PANchromatic band and remove the Y parallex problem significantly. We also confirmed that a rigorous warping process could also remove blocky brightness patterns present on KOMPSAT-2 PANchromatic band. Therefore, by implementing more rigorous warping process within KOMPSAT-2 scene generation procedures, KOMPSAT-2 geometric and radiometric quality will be improved.

  • This study evaluated the applicability of spacebourne datasets to the flood analysis in an ungauged watershed where is no discharge measurements. The Duman River basin of North Korea was selected as a target area which was flooded by recent Typhoon Lionrock. Topographical parameters for flood analysis were estimated from the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) Global Digital Elevation Model (GDEM). GDEM includes the shortcomings of information on river cross-section, and conducted 2 dimensional flood analysis when considering virtual river cross-section and not considering it. As a result of comparative analysis, an error occurs in the inundation area and depth, but when used carefully, it is considered that the satellite image can be used for creating flood hazard map and utilizing information for response and preparation.

  • With the recent development of autonomous vehicles, various sensors installed in vehicles have become common, and big data generated from those sensors is increasingly being used in the transportation field. In this study, we proposed a grid index method to efficiently process real-time vehicle sensing big data and public data such as road weather. The applicability and effect of the proposed grid space division method and grid ID generation method were analyzed. We created virtual data based on DTG data and mapped to the road link based on coordinates. As a result of analyzing the data processing speed in grid index method, the data processing performance improved by more than 2,400 times compared to the existing link unit processing method. In addition, in order to analyze the efficiency of the proposed technology, the virtually generated data was mapped and visualized.

  • Land use and land cover (LULC) mapping is an important factor in geospatial analysis. Although highly precise ground-based LULC monitoring is possible, it is time consuming and costly. Conversely, because the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensor is an all-weather sensor with high resolution, it could replace field-based LULC monitoring systems with low cost and less time requirement. Thus, LULC is one of the major areas in SAR applications. We developed a LULC model using only KOMPSAT-5 single co-polarized data and digital elevation model (DEM) data. Twelve HH-polarized images and 18 VV-polarized images were collected, and two HH-polarized images and four VV-polarized images were selected for the model testing. To train the LULC model, we applied the conditional generative adversarial network (cGAN) method. We used U-Net combined with the residual unit (ResUNet) model to generate the cGAN method. When analyzing the training history at 1732 epochs, the ResUNet model showed a maximum overall accuracy (OA) of 93.89 and a Kappa coefficient of 0.91. The model exhibited high performance in the test datasets with an OA greater than 90. The model accurately distinguished water body areas and showed lower accuracy in wetlands than in the other LULC types. The effect of the DEM on the accuracy of LULC was analyzed. When assessing the accuracy with respect to the incidence angle, owing to the radar shadow caused by the side-looking system of the SAR sensor, the OA tended to decrease as the incidence angle increased. This study is the first to use only KOMPSAT-5 single co-polarized data and deep learning methods to demonstrate the possibility of high-performance LULC monitoring. This study contributes to Earth surface monitoring and the development of deep learning approaches using the KOMPSAT-5 data.

  • The Nakdong Estuary Barrage is a tidal river environment where freshwater and seawater meet. This requires systematic monitoring of both surface water discharged from the estuary barrage and submarine groundwater discharge. In this study, upstream hydrograph and water balance analysis were used to calculate the change in water storage and discharge of the Nakdong Estuary Barrage. Submarine groundwater discharge was also calculated based on remote sensing-based digital elevation model data and hydrological modeling data, and compared with the estimated surface water discharge for analysis. Our proposed method can be efficiently applied to water resource management by utilizing remote sensing-based altimeter data other than field measurement. Because submarine groundwater discharge plays a significant role on the coastal environment as well as surface water discharge from an estuary barrage, studies on groundwatersurface water interactions in a river estuary should be sufficiently considered in monitoring the ecosystem of the Nakdong Estuary Barrage.

  • Recently, research using remote sensing has been active in various fields such as environment, science, and society. The results of research using remote sensing are not only numerical results, but also play an important role in solving and preventing social and scientific problems. The purpose of this thesis is to tell the correlation between the data provided and each data by using remote sensing technology for the tidal flat environment. The purpose of this study is to obtain high-resolution data using artificial satellites during remote sensing to find out information on tidal flat currents. Tidal flats created by erosion, sedimentation, low tide, and high tide contain information about the tidal flat slope and information about the ecosystem. Therefore, it can be considered as one of the very important studies to analyze the overall tidal flow channel. This paper creates a DEM (Digital Elevation Model) through TanDEM-X, and DEM is used as the most basic data to create a tidal channel. The research area is a tidal flat located in the middle of the west coast of Ganghwado tidal flat. By analyzing the tidal channel created, various information such as the slope direction of Ganghwado tidal flat and the shape of the tidal channel can be grasped. It is expected that the results of this study will increase the importance and necessity of using DEM data for tidal flat research in the future, and that high-quality results can be obtained.

  • SeNtinel's Application Platform (SNAP) is an open source software developed by the European Space Agency and consists of several toolboxes that process data from Sentinel satellite series, including SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) and optical satellites. Among them, S1TBX (Sentinel-1 ToolBoX)is mainly used to process Sentinel-1A/BSAR images and interferometric techniques. It provides flowchart processing method such as Graph Builder, and has convenient functions including automatic downloading of DEM (Digital Elevation Model) and image mosaicking. Therefore, if computer memory is sufficient, InSAR (Interferometric SAR) and DInSAR (Differential InSAR) perform smoothly and are widely used recently in the world through rapid upgrades. S1TBX also includes existing SAR data processing functions, and since version 5, the processing capability of KOMPSAT-5 has been added. This paper shows an example of processing the interference technique of KOMPSAT-5 SAR image using S1TBX of SNAP. In the open mine of Tavan Tolgoi in Mongolia, the difference between DEM obtained in KOMPSAT-5 in 2015 and SRTM 1sec DEM obtained in 2000 was analyzed. It was found that the maximum depth of 130 meters was excavated and the height of the accumulated ore is over 70 meters during 15 years. Tidal and topographic InSAR signals were observed in the glacier area near Jangbogo Antarctic Research Station, but SNAP was not able to treat it due to orbit error and DEM error. In addition, several DInSAR images were made in the Iraqi desert region, but many lines appearing in systematic errors were found on coherence images. Stacking for StaMPS application was not possible due to orbit error or program bug. It is expected that SNAP can resolve the problem owing to a surge in users and a very fast upgrade of the software.

  • This paper highlights the reconstruction of the rectilinear type of 3D rooftop model from satellite image data using centroid neural network. The main idea of the proposed 3D reconstruction method is based on the grouping of 3D line segments. 3D lines are extracted by 2D lines and DEM (Digital Elevation Map) data evaluated from a pair of stereo images. Our grouping process consists of two steps. We carry out the first grouping process to group fragmented or duplicated 3D lines into the principal 3D lines, which can be used to construct the rooftop model, and construct the groups of lines that are parallel each other in the second step. From the grouping result, 3D rooftop models are reconstructed by the final clustering process. High-resolution IKONOS images are utilized for the experiments. The experimental result's indicate that the reconstructed building models almost reflect the actual position and shape of buildings in a precise manner, and that the proposed approach can be efficiently applied to building reconstruction problem from high-resolution satellite images of an urban area.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the multi-modal interaction system. This system provides realistic and an immersive experience through multi-modal interaction. The system recognizes user behavior, intention, and attention, which overcomes the limitations of uni-modal interaction. The multi-modal interaction system is based upon gesture interaction methods, intuitive gesture interaction and attention evaluation technology. The gesture interaction methods were based on the sensors that were selected to analyze the accuracy of the 3-D gesture recognition technology using meta-analysis. The elements of intuitive gesture interaction were reflected through the results of experiments. The attention evaluation technology was developed by the physiological signal analysis. This system is divided into 3 modules; a motion cognitive system, an eye gaze detecting system, and a bio-reaction sensing system. The first module is the motion cognitive system which uses the accelerator sensor and flexible sensors to recognize hand and finger movements of the user. The second module is an eye gaze detecting system that detects pupil movements and reactions. The final module consists of a bio-reaction sensing system or attention evaluating system which tracks cardiovascular and skin temperature reactions. This study will be used for the development of realistic digital entertainment technology.

  • Recently, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of Science and ICT are developing the Land Observation Satellite (CAS-500) to meet increased demand for high-resolution satellite images. Expected image products of CAS-500 includes precision orthoimage, Digital Surface Model (DSM), change detection map, etc. The quality of these products is determined based on the geometric accuracy of satellite images. Therefore, it is important to make precision geometric corrections of CAS-500 images to produce high-quality products. Geometric correction requires the Ground Control Point (GCP), which is usually extracted manually using orthoimages and digital map. This requires a lot of time to acquire GCPs. Therefore, it is necessary to automatically extract GCPs and reduce the time required for GCP extraction and orthoimage generation. To this end, the Precision Image Processing (PIP) System was developed for CAS-500 images to minimize user intervention in GCP extraction. This paper explains the products, processing steps and the function modules and Database of the PIP System. The performance of the System in terms of processing speed, is also presented. It is expected that through the developed System, precise orthoimages can be generated from all CAS-500 images over the Korean peninsula promptly. As future studies, we need to extend the System to handle automated orthoimage generation for overseas regions.
