Tumors of the small intestine are rare and generally asymptomatic or with nonspecific symptoms. The small intestine is difficult to approach using conventional endoscopy, and early diagnosis of the small intestinal tumors is difficult. Therefore, many of the small intestinal tumors are diagnosed at an advanced stage, which makes the prognosis poor. Premalignant lesions of the small intestine or known risk factors of small bowel cancer are sporadic adenoma, adenoma associated with familial adenomatous polyposis, hamartomatous polyp associated with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome, Crohn's disease, and celiac disease. Therefore, it is necessary to recognize that the small bowel cancer can occur in these patients with premalignant lesions or risk factors of small bowel cancer. To reduce the possibility of small bowel cancer or to detect at an earlier stage, attention should be paid to screening and surveillance of these patients with premalignant lesions or risk factors of the small bowel cancer.
1. Objective This study is aimed to present the effective classification of Soeumin symptomatology and the standardized signs for classification which can be applied for KCD, ICD and the insurance codification system. 2. Methods 1) Differentiate Soeumin symptomatology based on exterior-interior patterns, favorable-unfavorable patterns, and mild-severe-dangerous-urgent patterns. 2) Investigate the standard signs and symptoms to claasify Soeumin symptomatology based on exterior-interior patterns, favorable-unfavorable patterns, and mild-severe-dangerous-urgent patterns. 3. Results and Conclusions 1) The diagnosis criteria for Soeumin exterior-interior disease is based upon signs & symptoms of cold/heat, condition of stool, state of digestive system(such as digestion and appetite)among others. 2) The diagnosis criteria for Soeumin favorable-unfavorable disease is generally based upon whether the vital force of the spleen is damaged or not. More specifically, for the exterior disease, whether or not sweating is present. For the interior disease, whether or not dry mouth, body ache(a main symptom of the exterior state), and anxiousness are present. 3) For the Soeumin Wool-gwang disease, the diagnosis criteria of mild-severe disease is whether or not chills is present and the degree of body fever. 4) For Soeumin Mang-yang disease, the diagnosis criteria of dangerous-urgent disease is whether or not chills is, the degree of sweating and urine condition. 5) For the Soeumin Greater-Yin disease, Abdominal-pain bowel irritability pattern and Epigastric discomfort pattern are early state signs, Jaundice pattern is mild-state sign, edema & Greater-Yang disease Yin-toxin pattern are terminal state signs. 6) For the Soeumin interior disease, Abdominal-pain bowel irritability pattern and Epigastric discomfort pattern are of the dangerous state pattern, Jang-gual and Exuberant-Yin-repelling-Yang pattern are of the urgent state patterns.

The objective of this study is to find out a reason why prescriptions have different effects on each patient who has same symptoms or same abdominal examinations and further more to classify the formulas more efficiently. In applying 's prescriptions, it is known that conventional ways such as treatment in accordance with symptoms or abdominal examinations have many advantages and problems reversely. To make up for the problems, additional references like strength of constitutional resistance and location of disease, degree of income and outgo are designed. And the notion in Oriental Medicine embracing aspects mentioned above corresponds to triple energizer. Triple energizer's exuberance-debilitation is able to draw an inference from some factors like density of skin interstices, elasticity of abdomen, appetite, digestive power. According to Exuberance-Debilitation of Triple Energizer, can be divided into five steps: weak(弱)-moderately weak(中弱)-neither weak nor strong(中)-moderately strong(中强)-strong(强). prescriptions would be dealt with those 5 steps, and it would be highly effective and consequently side effects could be reduced. On the basis of this classification method upon formula group, the prescriptions of can be applied more accurately by setting a direction through strength of constitutional resistance and location of disease and combining with existing references like symptoms, palpation and abdominal examinations.

Poultry products including meat and eggs constitute a major protein source in the American diet and disease - causing pathogens represent major challenges to the poultry industry. More than 95 % of pathogens enter the host through the mucosal surfaces of the respiratory, digestive and reproductive tracts and over the past few decades, the two main mechanisms used to control diseases have been the use of vaccines and antibiotics. However, in the poultry industry, there are mounting concerns over the ability of current vaccines to adequately protect against emerging hyper - virulent strains of pathogens and a lack of suitable, cost effective adjuvants. Thorough investigation of the immunogenetic responses involved in host-pathogen interactions will lead to the development of new and effective strategies for improving poultry health, food safety and the economic viability of the US poultry industry. In this paper, I describe the development of immunogenomic and proteomic tools to fundamentally determine and characterize the immunological mechanisms of the avian host to economically significant mucosal pathogens such as Eimeria. Recent completion of poultry genome sequencing and the development of several tissue-specific cDNA libraries in chickens are facilitating the rapid application of functional immunogenomics in the poultry disease research. Furthermore, research involving functional genomics, immunology and bioinformatics is providing novel insights into the processes of disease and immunity to microbial pathogens at mucosal surfaces. In this presentation, a new strategy of global gene expression using avian macrophage (AMM) to characterize the multiple pathways related to the variable immune responses of the host to Eimeria is described. This functional immunogenomics approach will increase current understanding of how mucosal immunity to infectious agents operates, and how it may be enhanced to enable the rational development of new and effective strategies against coccidiosis and other mucosal pathogens.
In this study, we researched the effects of herbal medicine on anemia among 43 patients. Before being given prescriptions, these patients were examined for RBC count, hemoglobin, and hematocrits, which are important in evaluating improvements in anemia. After administering the herbal medicine over two weeks, we rechecked the RBC count, hemoglobin, and hematocrits on a secondary inspection. We compared the primary and secondary tests with respect to age, sex, diseases, the name of the herbal medicine, and the composition of the medicine. The results were as follows. In groups of five or more, the musculoskeletal pain disease group was more improved than the other disease groups on the secondary test. The digestive diseases group was worse than the other disease groups on the secondary test. In the composition of the prescription, herbs that enriched the blood (補血), invigorated the spleen (健脾), and nourished Eum (補陰) were used more than any other herbs for those whose status improved. Among patients who were partially normalized for the secondary test, this applied to men more than women, to patients in the pain group more than those in other disease groups, and to patients with cerebral hemorrhage more than stroke patients. Among patients who were partially normalized for the secondary test, the group taking tangyak herbal medication improved more than the other groups taking powder and pill herbal medications.
We proceeded the judgement of Sasang constitution of 79 children(the age 101 between 15) who have visited Dongguk Bundang Oriental Medical Hospital during 3 months from August 2002 to October 2002 by Questionnaire of Sasang Constitution Classification and conducted questionnaire survey about the type of disease and symptom occurred frequently. The conclusion is following. 1. The distribution of Sasang constitution: Soeum group(少陰人) 32, Taeeuml group(太陰人) 29, Soyang group(少陽人) 18. 2. The distribution of systemic disease occurred frequently : in digestive system, Soeum (46.9%) & Soyang(44.4%) group more than Taeeum group(34.5%) and in genitourinary system and others, Soeum(28.1%) more than Taeeum group(17.2%). 3. The distribution of symptom occurred frequently : in rhinitis and sinusitis, Taeeum(60.0%) & Soeum(60.0%) more than Soyang(45.5%), in abdominal pain, Soeum(58.8%) & Soyang(62.5%) more than Taeeum(36.4%), and in diarrhea, Taeeum(45.5%) more than Soeum(123.5%) & Soyang group(25.0%). Headache & vexation(心煩) are almost found in Soeum group with abdominal pain and excessive sweating is only found in Taeeum group. 4. The efficacy of herbal medication combined with Cervix Cornu Pranum (鹿茸加味劑) : after the medication, change of condition have showed in Taeeum group at the most high rate(31.0%) and showed in Soeum(15.6%) and Soyang(11.1%) group. 5. The distribution of allergic disease: allergic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis took up the majority of all allergic diseases. In morbidity of allergic rhinitis, Taeeum(62.1%) & Soyang(55.6%) more than Soeum(37.5%). In morbidity of other allergic diseases and degree of severity, it has no difference among three Sasang constitution groups.

Objectives : Schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorder are associated with an increased risk of premature death. For decades, there have been reports of shorter life expectancy among those with severe mental illness. The purpose of this study was to compare the risk of mortality among institutionalized population, treated for severe mental illness to control group who did not have severe mental illness. Methods : The medical records and the death certificates of 2,029 institutionalized population who had died from 1985 to 2003 in Kkottongnae were investigated. Results : The mean age of the death of severe mental illness(SMI) group(51.4${\pm}$15.3 years old) was lower than that of non-severe mental illness(non-SMI) group(65.0${\pm}$19.3 years old) and it was statistically significant(p<0.0001). The most causes of death among the SMI group were respiratory diseases(23.3%), infectious disease (13.0%) and digestive disease(12.3%). Also, we found that the death due to injuries of the SMI group(8.9%) were three times higher than that of non-SMI group(2.5%). The most causes of death among the non-SMI group were respiratory disease(26.3%), circulatory disease(26.2%) and neoplasm(10.8%). Conclusion : The SMI group demonstrated higher mortality rates compared with the rate in the non-SMI group. The finding suggests that careful intervention is needed not only for menal health but also physical health in long-term facilities.
