An engineering design of the machines and equipment for processing grain as well as an understanding of processing itself need the knowledge of thermal properties of grain. Thermal properties of grain are thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity and specific heat. Knowledge of any two and the bulk density of grain enables the third to be calculated. Several workers have investigated these properties, with special emphasis on thermal conductivity and diffusivity. However, some information is available on the specific heat of rough rice and barley but it is available only for a foreign variety of grain and for as a function of moisture content only. The objectives of this study were to develop a model for the specific heat of rough rice and barley which were a staple products in Korea as a function of initial temperature, moisture content and porosity of grain with cooling curve method, and to analyze the effect of these factors on the specific heat of rough rice and barley. The results of this study are summarized as follows; 1. The specific heat was $1.8209-2.7041kJ/kg\;^{\circ}K$ for Naked barley, 1.8862-2.5625 k.l/kg K for Covered barley, $1.5167-2.3779kJ/kg\;^{\circ}K$ for Japonica rice and $1.5260-2.3981kJ/kg\;^{\circ}K$ for Indica rice. 2. The model for the specific heat of rough rice and barley as a function of initial temperature, moisture content and porosity of grain was developed. 3. Specific heat of rough rice was decreased with initial temperature, but specific heat of barley was increased with initial temperature. 4. On the whole specific heat of sample grain was increased with moisture content of grain. 5. Specific heat of the grain was found to decrease with porosity except Indica rice.
The high temperature and water content in soil profile probably affect the physiological disorder especially on cool-season turfgrasses in warm and humid weather of Korean summer. The purpose of this research was to analyze the effect of soil temperature and water content on the growth and stress response of creeping bentgrass(Agrostis palustris Huds.) under a humid and warm temperature. USGA(United State of Golf Association) green profile in laboratory test, Daily temperature changes were tested under a dried sand, 70% water content of field capacity, and saturated condition at $34^{\circ}C$ of the USGA green in lab. In this test, the dried sand reached to $80^{\circ}C$, however, the surface temperature decrease of $10^{\circ}C$ on the saturated condition. In the thermal properties test in field, thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, and soil temperature were increased followed by irrigation practise. In the water-deficient condition, the highest soil temperature was reached temporally right after irrigation, however, the excessive soil water content higher than field water holding capacity showed the highest soil temperature after a while. This result indicated that a heat damage to root system was caused from the thermal conductivity of a high surface soil temperature. The excessive irrigation when a high turf surface temperature should occur a negative result on tufgrass growth, moreover, it would be fatal to root growth of creeping bentgrass, especially when associated with a poor draining system on USGA sand green. Overall, this study shows that high soil temperature with water-excessive condition negatively affects on cool-season grass during the summer season, suggesting that excessive irrigation, over 70% field capacity of soil condition, does not help to reduce soil temperature for summer season in Korea. In the study that cool-season grass were treated with different water content of soil, The soil had higher temperature and more water holding capacity when treatment rate of soil conditioner was increased. The best growth at the normal water condition and the worst state of growth at thee water-excessive condition were observed.
In this paper, 23 Silla gold earrings from the sixth and seventhand centuries, excavated from the Yeongnam region, were analyzed. Based on the silver content of the gold plate, they were classified into three types. The classifications included type I(20-50wt%), type II(10-20wt%) and type III (less than 10wt%). In the analysis process, the composition and morphological differences were identified on the surface of the gold plate. In the case of type I and II earrings, it was observed that the fine holes were concentrated in a relatively higher part of the gold content. The causes of the difference in the surface composition of the gold plate were divided into four categories: 1) surface treatment, 2) thermal diffusivity in the manufacturing process, 3) differences in composition of alluvial gold, and 4) the refining method of gold. It is possible that depletion gilding was attempted to increase the gold content while intentionally removing the other metals from the surface of the gold alloy in the portion where the gold deposit is relatively concentrated on the surface of the gold plating. The highest copper content was detected in the earring with the highest gold content of the analyzed earrings, and it was assumed that thermal diffusion had occurred between the gold plate and the metal rod during the manufacturing process rather than intentional addition. Copper was detected only in the thin ring earring type, and copper was not detected in the thick ring earring type or pendant type. It also proves that this earring has a high degree of tightness at higher temperatures, as there was an invisible edge finish on other earrings and horizontal wrinkles on the gold plate surface. In terms of the material of the gold plate, we examined whether the silver content of the gold plate was natural gold or added by alloy through analyzing the alluvial gold collected in the region. As a result of the analysis, it was found that on average about 13wt% of silver is included. This suggests that type II is natural gold, type III is refined gold, and type I seems to have been alloyed with natural gold. Here, we investigated the refining method introduced in the ancient literature, both at home and abroad, about the possibility of alloying silver after the refining process of type III earrings and then making pure gold. It was found that from ancient refining methods, silver which had been present in the natural gold was removed by reacting and combining with silver chloride or silver sulfide, and long-term efforts and techniques were required to obtain pure gold through this method. Therefore, it was concluded that the possibility of adding a small amount of silver in order to increase strength after making pure gold through a refining process is low.
The initiation and growth processes of cyclic ice body in porous systems are affected by the thermo-physical and mass transport properties, as well as gradients of temperature and chemical potentials. Furthermore, the diffusivity of deicing chemicals shows significantly higher value under cyclic freeze-thaw conditions. Consequently, the disintegration of concrete structures is aggravated at marine environments, higher altitudes, and northern areas. However, the properties of cyclic freeze-thaw with crack growth and the deterioration by the accumulated damages are hard to identify in tests. In order to predict the accumulated damages by cyclic freeze-thaw, a regression analysis by the response surface method (RSM) is used. The important parameters for cyclic freeze-thawdeterioration of concrete structures, such as water to cement ratio, entrained air pores, and the number of cycles of freezing and thawing, are used to compose the limit state function. The regression equation fitted to the important deterioration criteria, such as accumulated plastic deformation, relative dynamic modulus, or equivalent plastic deformations, were used as the probabilistic evaluations of performance for the degraded structural resistance. The predicted results of relative dynamic modulus and residual strains after 300 cycles of freeze-thaw show very good agreements with the experimental results. The RSM result can be used to predict the probability of occurrence for designer specified critical values. Therefore, it is possible to evaluate the life cycle management of concrete structures considering the accumulated damages due to the cyclic freeze-thaw using the proposed prediction method.
PEG(poly(ethylene glycol)) acrylate/PPG(poly(propylene glycol)) acrylate (PEG/PPG) was prepared using UV induced photopolymerization method to investigate gas permeation properties of the membrane. The effect of PPG content on the solubility, diffusivity, and permeability of $CO_2$, $O_2$, and $N_2$ in PEG/PPG membrane is reported at $25^{\circ}C$ and $35^{\circ}C$. PEG/PPG (9:1) membrane exhibits $CO_2$ permeability coefficient of 28.9 barrer and $CO_2$/$N_2$ pure gas selectivity of 57.9 at $25^{\circ}C$. Permeability coefficient of increased with increasing with PPG content in the membrane. PEG/PPG (5:5) membrane shows $CO_2$ permeability coefficient of 78.9 barrer and $CO_2$/$N_2$ pure gas selectivity of 33.2 at $25^{\circ}C$.
In order to develope a clean technology by liquid-supported membrane of ionic liquid/PVDF, the solubility of R22 and HFP gases using BMIBF4 as ionic liquid were measured at temperatures from 0 to $30^{\circ}C$, at total pressures up to 4 bars. The solubility of R22 in this ionic liquid was shown a rapid increasing tendency with increases of pressure and decreases of temperature, respectively, whereas the solubility of HFP was showed only a little in the same conditions. Based on these results, liquid-supported membranes of ionic liquid/PVDF were prepared by variables of the deposition amount of ionic liquid in polymer matrix, PVDF and were applied to the separation of fluoro-gases(R22, HFP) including $N_2$ gas. The permeability of R22 was rapidly increased by depending on the deposition amounts of ionic liquid, whereas both of HFP and $N_2$ were just showed so little. Especially, the diffusivity coefficient and solubility parameter of R22 were increased by lower operating temperatures and increased deposition amount of ionic liquid in 1iquid membrane. In conclusion, the selectivity of R22 against HFP was changed to 10-45 times depending on both of operating temperatures and the deposition amount of ionic liquid in BMIBF4/PVDF liquid membrane.
Vertical and horizontal mixing processes in the ocean mixed layer determine sea surface temperature and temperature variability. Accordingly, simulating these processes properly is crucial in order to obtain more accurate climate simulations and more reliable future projections using an ocean general circulation model (OGCM). In this study, by using Modular Ocean Model version 4 (MOM4) developed by Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory, the upper ocean temperature and mixed layer depth were simulated with two different vertical mixing schemes that are most widely used and then compared. The resultant differences were analyzed to understand the underlying mechanism, especially in the Tropical Pacific Ocean where the differences appeared to be the greatest. One of the schemes was the so-called KPP scheme that uses K-Profile parameterization with nonlocal vertical mixing and the other was the N scheme that was rather recently developed based on a second-order turbulence closure. In the equatorial Pacific, the N scheme simulates the mixed layer at a deeper level than the KPP scheme. One of the reasons is that the total vertical diffusivity coefficient simulated with the N scheme is ten times larger, at maximum, in the surface layer compared to the KPP scheme. Another reason is that the zonal current simulated with the N scheme peaks at a deeper ocean level than the KPP scheme, which indicates that the vertical shear was simulated on a larger scale by the N scheme and it enhanced the mixed layer depth. It is notable that while the N scheme simulates a deeper mixed layer in the equatorial Pacific compared to the KPP scheme, the sea surface temperature (SST) simulated with the N scheme was cooler in the central Pacific and warmer in the eastern Pacific. We postulated that the reason for this is that in the central Pacific atmospheric forcing plays an important role in determining SST and so does a strong upwelling in the eastern Pacific. In conclusion, what determines SST is crucial in interpreting the relationship between SST and mixed layer depth.

A study on thermal properties for a single-layer metal and two-layer composites was investigated for the heat-sink application. For the single-layer metal, an aluminum alloy (Al6061) was selected. A screen printed aluminum nitride (AlN) layer on the Al6061 substrate was chosen for the two-layer composites. The thermal conductivity of the sample was determined from the thermal diffusivity measured by the light flash analysis (LFA), specific heat and density. Measured thermal property values were compared to calculated values using the data from the references. The thermal conductivity of composites with screen printed AlN layer on the Al6061 substrate decreased linearly with increasing the thickness of AlN layer. Measured values of the thermal conductivity for composites with $53{\mu}m$ and $163{\mu}m$ thick AlN layers were $114.1W/m{\cdot}K$ and $72.3W/m{\cdot}K$, respectively. In particular, the thermal conductivity of the screen-printed AlN layer was demonstrated by appling the rule of mixture in view point of thermal resistivity. Measured values of the thermal conductivity for AlN layers with the thickness of $53{\mu}m$ and $163{\mu}m$ showed $9.35W/m{\cdot}K$ and $12.40W/m{\cdot}K$, respectively.

The cracks occurred during service life of concrete structure should be considered in durability design, because of the concrete's material property which is weak in tensile strength. In this study, the fly ash concrete mixtures considering 2 levels of strength is designed and outdoor exposure tests are conducted for those concrete specimens. The exposure environment is set to a splash zone, and in order to evaluate the effect of crack width on the behavior of chloride diffusion, the crack width of up to 1.0 mm is generated at intervals of 0.1 mm at each concrete mixture. After that, apparent chloride diffusion coefficient and surface chloride contents are deducted considering 3 levels of exposure periods(180 days, 365 days, 730 days). The diffusion coefficients of two types of mixture increase with the increase of crack width, and the diffusion coefficients decrease with the increase of exposure periods. In addition, the effect of the crack width on the diffusion coefficient is reduced as the exposure periods increase, which is attributed to the extra hydrate by chloride ion reducing the diffusivity of concrete. The behavior of the surface chloride contents does not significantly change by the increase in crack width, compared to the behavior of apparent chloride diffusion coefficient. Also, In the high strength FA concrete mixture, the surface chloride contents are 78.9 % ~ 90.7 % than the normal FA strength concrete mixture. Thus, Surface chloride contents have correlation with the strength of concrete.

Recently, the coastal area has become the popular place for infrastructure development. To provide a beautiful scenary of costal area to nearby facilities without any hinderance, and also to protect those facilities from the sea water overflow, it is necessary to develop a new type of wave dissipating block, which is a turning wave block. It is noticeable that the top of the turning wave block is flat and thus can provide spaces for various purposes. However, the unit weight of the block decreases due to the presence of pipeline that is installed for turning the direction of the waves. In order to mitigate such problem, a heavyweight concrete needs to be used to increase the resistance against tidal waves. The copper slag and magnetite were used as a source of fine and coarse aggregate, respectively. The 28 day compressive strength of concrete incorporating ordinary and heavyweight aggregate did not show significant differences. It should be noted that the chloride ion penetration resistance was evaluated using NT-BUILD 492 rather than ASTM C 1202 method because concrete incorporating magnetite as a coarse aggregate showed excessive current flow by ASTM C 1202 method. According to the results from NT Build 492 method, which uses the penetration depth of chlorine ions to obtain chloride ion diffusivity, the heavyweight concrete incorporating the copper slag and the magnetite showed the best resistance against the chloride ion penetration. Therefore, it is reasonable to say that heavyweight concrete made with copper slag and magnetite can be used for production of turning wave block.
