Two-microphone binary mask speech enhancement (2mBMSE) has been of particular interest in recent literature and has shown promising results. Current 2mBMSE systems rely on spatial cues of speech and noise sources. Although these cues are helpful for directional noise sources, they lose their efficiency in diffuse noise fields. We propose a new system that is effective in both directional and diffuse noise conditions. The system exploits two features. The first determines whether a given time-frequency (T-F) unit of the input spectrum is dominated by a diffuse or directional source. A diffuse signal is certainly a noise signal, but a directional signal could correspond to a noise or speech source. The second feature discriminates between T-F units dominated by speech or directional noise signals. Speech enhancement is performed using a binary mask, calculated based on the proposed features. In both directional and diffuse noise fields, the proposed system segregates speech T-F units with hit rates above 85%. It outperforms previous solutions in terms of signal-to-noise ratio and perceptual evaluation of speech quality improvement, especially in diffuse noise conditions.

The diffuse sound field plays a crucial role in the perceptual quality of the auralization of virtual scenes. Diffuse Rain is a geometrical scattering model which enables the simulation of diffuse fields that is compatible with acoustic ray tracing, but is often computationally expensive. We develop a novel method that can reduce this cost by rendering the large number of Diffuse Rain data in Ambisonics format. The proposed method is evaluated in a shoebox scene simulation run on MATLAB, in reference to a more faithful method of rendering the Diffuse Rain data ray-by-ray. The EDC and IACC of the binaural output show that the simulated diffuse field can be rendered in Ambisonics with only minimal deviations in energy decay and spatial quality, even with 1st-order Ambisonics.
We have studied the physical properties of X-ray point sources in galaxy clusters for years based on the archival observations using the most sophisticated space X-ray observatory, Chandra X-ray Observatory. Because the ultimate goal of the study is comparing the physical properties of X-ray point sources found in galaxy clusters to those in X-ray blank fields; blank fields are the regions in the sky where any noticeable cosmic diffuse X-ray emission is not observed, an important key issue regarding this study is picking out the point sources related with galaxy clusters. However we do not have red-shift information of all the X-ray point sources. Therefore as a first order approximation we will consider the point sources with smaller projected cluster-centric distance than the adopted size of galaxy clusters. As a first step of this study we perform X-ray surface photometry of ~600 galaxy clusters based on ~800 Chandra ACIS observations. We carefully investigate the radial structures of diffuse X-ray emission in 3 different energy bands. Based on the highly accurate surface photometry we determine the characteristic size of diffuse X-ray emission (i.e., the boundary of X-ray emission). We also investigate the cosmological evolution of this characteristic size of galaxy clusters. General discussion regarding the two dimensional morphology of galaxy clusters will be presented.
Lymphangioleiomyomatosis(LAM) is a rare disease of unknown etiology that occurs mainly in woman in her reproductive age. We recently experienced two cases of bilateral diffuse cystic lesion of the lung on chest X-ray and HRCT. The first case, a 26-year-old female, who had been diagnosed with tuberous sclerosis by the presence of clinical manifestation such as mental retardation, bilateral renal angiomyolipoma, adenoma sebaceum and generalized seizure, was admitted due to a recently developed hemoptysis. Chest PA showed diffuse ground-glass opacity with radiolucent cystic lesions of various sizes on both lung fields. HRCT showed innumerable small cystic lesions with suspicious diffuse ground-glass opacity on both lung fields The second case, a 30-year-old fema1e was admitted due to dyspnea and spewing of blood-tinged sputum for 2 weeks, shortly after delivery. Chest PA showed diffuse reticular and ground-glass opacities on both lung field. HRCT showed multiple well-defined and relatively uniform size air cysts with a uniform wall thickness on entire both lung fields, with small amount of right pleural effusion. By thoracoscopic lung biopsy she was diagnosed with pulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis. We report these cases with a brief review of the literatures.

Large span spaces have been widely used for various purposes including sports events in other countries. Due to increasing demands on multi-purpose use of such spaces, recently built large span sport facilities such dome stadiums have been required to accommodate sport events as well as performing events. Also, retractable ceilings and/or walls were generally adopted in those spaces for providing various event conditions. It seems obvious that the openings between diffuse fields and free field may cause difficulties in the acoustic design of such spaces In the present work, the acoustic characteristics of non-diffuse field has been investigated using 1/10 acoustic scale models. It was found that RTs at low- and mid-frequencies decayed faster than those at high-frequencies as the percentage of opening area increased. The decay rate of RTs at high frequencies were not influenced by increasing the area of an opening. Also high dependence of EDT on the percentage of opening area was observed at all frequency range. D50 was not improved by increasing the area of an opening up to 12.5% and then sharply increased. The application of Schroeder integration to evaluate the reverberation charateristics of coupled spaces may not be proper, since non-exponential decay process with double or triple decays of those spaces can not be properly defined. EDT seems more appropriate to predict reverberation at the early acoustic design stage of acoustically coupled spaces.

A new meshfree formulation is developed for material discontinuity problems. A local interfacial jump function which is defined as hyperplane function is embedded in the meshless approximation and the approximation accurately models functions with jumps in the displacement and the derivative fields. Diffuse derivative technique copes with difficulty due to complexity of derivative computation of meshfree approximation. Collocation method with diffuse derivative accelerates computing speed for numerical solution. By solving inclusion and composite material problems, the robustness and effectiveness of the method are verified.
Observations of magnetic fields on scales up to several Mpc are important for understanding cluster and large-scale structure evolution. Our current census of such structures is heavily biased - towards fields of several $\mu$G, towards fields in deep potential wells, and towards high inferred field strengths m cooling flow and other clusters from improper analysis of rotation measure data. After reviewing these biases, I show some recent results on two relics that are powered in very different ways. I describe new investigations that are now uncovering weak diffuse fields in the outskirts of clusters and other low density environments, and the good prospects for further progress.
We present a novel method to implement time-delayed propagation of radiation fields in cosmological radiative transfer simulations. Time-delayed propagation of radiation fields requires construction of retarded-time fields by tracking the location and lifetime of radiation sources along the corresponding light-cones. Cosmological radiative transfer simulations have, until now, ignored this "light-cone effect" or implemented ray-tracing methods that are computationally demanding. We show that radiative transfer calculation of the time-delayed fields can be easily achieved in numerical simulations when periodic boundary conditions are used, by calculating the time-discretized retarded-time Green's function using the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) method and convolving it with the source distribution. We also present a direct application of this method to the long-range radiation field of Lyman-Werner band photons, which is important in the high-redshift astrophysics with first stars.

Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS) is a disorder that is characterized by asthma, hypereosinophilia and systemic vasculitis affecting a number of organs. The manifestations of acute cholecystitis and diffuse alveolar hemorrhage are rarely reported in CSS. A 22-year-old woman with bronchial asthma visited our hospital complaining of right upper quadrant pain with a sudden onset. The abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan revealed gall bladder edema consistent with acute cholecystitis. On the initial evaluation, marked hypereosinophilia was observed in the peripheral blood smear. The nerve conduction velocity measurements and a skin biopsy performed to confirm the organ involvement of disease indicated typical mononeuritis multiplex and necrotizing vasculitis, respectively, which was complicated with CSS. On the 12th hospital day, ground glass opacity and consolidations were newly developed on both lung fields. The bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid showed increasing bloody return in sequential aliquots that were characteristic of a diffuse alveolar hemorrhage. We report a case of CSS with acute cholecystitis and diffuse alveolar hemorrhage.
Discrete auroras, with unique shapes embedded in diffuse auroras, are generally associated with precipitating electrons that originate from the plasma sheet and are accelerated on the way as they travel to polar regions along the field lines. Two acceleration mechanisms have been proposed: quasi-static electric fields and dispersive Alfven waves, which are believed to yield monoenergetic peaks and broadband features in the particle spectra, respectively. Hence, it should be interesting to see how the two different mechanisms, through their characteristic spectra of the accelerated electrons, produce distinct auroral images and spectra, especially in the far ultraviolet (FUV) wavelengths as the long and short Lyman-Birge-Hopfield (LBH) bands exist as well as the strong absorption band of molecular oxygen in the FUV band. In fact, we have previously shown, using the simultaneous observations of precipitating electrons and the corresponding FUV spectra, that the discrete auroras associated with inverted-V events have a stronger relative intensity of the long LBH to the short LBH compared to diffuse auroras, especially when the peak energy is above a few keV. In this paper, we would like to focus on the differences in the FUV images and spectra between the two discrete auroras of the monoenergetic and broadband cases, again based on the study using the dataset of simultaneous observations of particles and FUV spectral images.
