The Role of Stem Cells and Gap Junctional Intercellular Communication in Carcinogenesis

  • Understanding the process of carcinogenesis will involve both the accumulation of many scientific facts derived from molecular, biochemical, cellular, physiological, whole animal experiments and epidemiological studies, as well as from conceptual understanding as to how to order and integrate those facts. From decades of cancer research, a number of the "hallmarks of cancer" have been identified, as well as their attendant concepts, including oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes, cell cycle biochemistry, hypotheses of metastasis, angiogenesis, etc. While all these "hallmarks" are well known, two important concepts, with their associated scientific observations, have been generally ignored by many in the cancer research field. The objective of the short review is to highlight the concept of the role of human adult pluri-potent stem cells as "target cells" for the carcinogenic process and the concept of the role of gap junctional intercellular communication in the multi-stage, multi-mechanism process of carcinogenesis. With these two concepts, an attempt has been made to integrate the other well-known concepts, such as the multi-stage, multi-mechanisn or the "initiation/promotion/progression" hypothesis; the stem cell theory of carcinogenesis; the oncogene/tumor suppression theory and the mutation/epigenetic theories of carcinogenesis. This new "integrative" theory tries to explain the well-known "hallmarks" of cancers, including the observation that cancer cells lack either heterologous or homologous gap junctional intercellular communication whereas normal human adult stem cells do not have expressed or functional gap junctional intercellular communication. On the other hand, their normal differentiated, non-stem cell derivatives do express connexins and express gap junctional intercellular communication during their differentiation. Examination of the roles of chemical tumor promoters, oncogenes, connexin knock-out mice and roles of genetically-engineered tumor and normal cells with connexin and anti-sense connexin genes, respectively, seems to provide evidence which is consistent with the roles of both stem cells and gap junctional communication playing a major role in carcinogenesis. The integrative hypothesis provides new strategies for chemoprevention and chemotherapy which focuses on modulating connexin gene expression or gap junctional intercellular communication in the premalignant and malignant cells, respectively.

국내 패션 디자이너 브랜드 개성 구성요인에 관한 질적 연구 (A Qualitative Study on Korean Fashion Designer Brand Individuality Factors)

  • The domestic fashion industry of the middle and late 20th century emphasized the importance of a standardized design process; however, the values of differentiated brand individuality have become increasingly important with the qualitative·quantitative growth of designer brands. Therefore, paying attention to designer individuality (or a differentiated element of a designer brand growing up in the domestic fashion industry) this study reestablished factors of the designer brand individuality. An in-depth interview was conducted with 13 designers and consumers for empirical analysis. In order to identify concepts of designer individuality based on the theory of the brand personality by Aaker along with precedent studies, the study devised a theoretical frame to explain a conceptual structure of designer brand individuality as well as reestablish its factors as the designer individuality, design and non-design factors through empirical research. Empirical research derived the designer individuality factors as an external designer image, designer taste, design philosophy and designer personality. Design factors were derived as concept, working process and method, style and formativeness. Non-design factors were also extracted as wearing experience, wearer image, lookbook image, fashion shows and exhibitions. It is meaningful that little empirical research has been conducted on domestic fashion designers who actually run designer brands and that this study helped understand designer brands through a new approach called designer individuality.

추상화계층에 기반한 작업영역분석의 모델링 개념 및 적용 원칙 (Work Domain Analysis Based on Abstraction Hierarchy: Modelling Concept and Principles for Its Application)

  • As a work analysis technique, Work Domain Analysis (WDA) aims to identify the design knowledge structure of a work domain that human operators interact with through human-system interfaces. Abstraction hierarchy (AH) is a multi-level, hierarchical knowledge representation framework for modeling the functional structure of any kinds of systems. Thus, WDA based on AH aims to identify the functional knowledge structure of a work domain. AH has been used in a range of work domains and problems to model their functional knowledge structure and has proven its generality and usefulness. However, many of researchers and system designers have reported that it is never easy to understand the concepts underlying AH and use it effectively for WDA. This would be because WDA is a form of work analysis that is different from other types of work analysis techniques such as task analysis and AH has several unique characteristics that are differentiated from other types of function analysis techniques used in systems engineering. With this issue in mind, this paper introduces the concepts of WDA based on AH and offers a comprehensive list of references. Next, this paper proposes a set of principles for effectively applying AH for work domain analysis, which are developed based on the author's experiences, consultation with experts, and literature reviews.

  • Theories and concepts emerging in new media environment are influencing the field of current spatial design. Art and technology have always coexisted, not but they are differentiated in two parts. They show new communicational paradigm in terms of supplementary position each other. The fact that examining the expression method and the communicational structure of today's new media art will be an analytical tool which analyzes the concepts of contemporary spatial design. For this, we attempt to use the Bolter and Gusin's remediation theory as analytical tool. First of all, we consider its theoretical aspects, and then, classify them according to the creation method, and investigate the characteristics of expression according to their types. We prepared an framework of analysis using the Remediation theory and its traits. We reviewed the relations between new media and spaces concerning remediation. After researching, we could analyze the cognitive aspects between new media and spaces as immediacy, and recognize the operational aspects of visual image as hypermediacy. Through the analysis, we could recognize the traits that digital environmental simulacres, sense of telepresence, and non-linear hypermediacy etc. remediate with repeating of mediation of mediation.

미국 동기관계연구의 최근동향 - 기본인식과 접근방법- (Current States of Sibling Researches in America)

  • The purpose of this review is to establish a groundwork for building a more comprehensive conceptual framework within which various aspects of sibling relations and factor related to sibling behaviors con be explained and integrated. Descriptions of the trends and shifts in sibling studies are made in terms of their themes, variables, basic perceptions and general approaches, and analyzes of current state of sibling researches are made with relation to the conceptual aspects of the studies, namely, their standpoints on the issues of sibling variations, the sources of variations, and basic units of analysis, their reliance or emphasis on different methods, and their interests in the mediation processes. It is recognized that research variables have been successively differentiated and used in diversified manners and family ecology and systems theory viewpoints have been incorporated into the understanding of sibling relations. A triad in its full meaning, rather than a dyad or a partial trial, is proposed as a unit of analysis in order for the researchers to be able to examine and describe the true interactional aspects of family relations involving sibling relations. The concepts of coexistence and interaction are proposed as key concepts os that the inconsistencies in findings, differing viewpoints, contradicting conceptions , and contrasting approaches can be interpreted and integrated into a unified system of theories on siblings. The coexistence of similarities and differences in reality. the inevitability of interaction between individual variables and environmental variables and between within-family environmental factors and our-of-family environmental factors, and the need for the joint use of intrafamilial and extrafamilial approach are acknowledged. Attention is also drawn to the mechanism characteristics and the directionality of the mediating processes of mediating variables between a variable and its effects.

고등학교 천체관측 관련 개념의 지식상태 분석에 따른 교수-학습 효과 (Investigating the Effects of Teaching Based on an Analysis of High School Students' Knowledge State of Concepts Associated with Astronomical Observation)

  • 본 연구는 고등학교 천체관측 관련 개념 검사지를 개발하여 지식상태 분석법으로 천체관측 개념의 위계와 개별 학습자의 지식상태를 분석하였고, 이에 따른 교수-학습 효과를 알아 보았다. 학습자가 갖고 있는 천체관측 관련 개념의 심리적 위계는 '지구운동 ${\rightarrow}$천구좌표계 ${\rightarrow}$천체관측(망원경 원리 ${\rightarrow}$망원경 설치 ${\rightarrow}$망원경 관측)' 순이었으며, 교수 위계(70.8%)도 같은 순 이었다. 개념 검사에서 같은 점수를 획득하여 천체관측 능력이 비슷할 것으로 추정되는 학습자의 지식상태가 서로 다르게 나타났다. 지식상태의 구조화가 잘 이루어진 경우와 그렇지 못한 사례가 있었는데, 이는 서로다른 교수-학습 처방이 이루어져야 함을 시사한다. 즉, 지식상태 분석을 통하여 학습자의 개별화 학습 처방과 형성평가의 역할을 할 수 있다. 지구과학I의 천체관측 단원에서 교과서의 내용 제시 순서 보다 학습자의 심리적 위계에 따라 수업한 경우가 개념의 성취도 수준에서 유의미(p<0.05)하게 더 높았다. 이는 교사들이 천체관측 관련 개념을 지도할 때, 교육과정을 토대로 학습자의 지식상태를 파악하여 교과서의 학습 내용을 재순서화 함으로써 더 효과적인 학습이 이루어질 수 있음을 보여준다.

한국 불교와 대순진리회 죽음관 비교연구 - 윤회와 명부·시왕 관념을 중심으로 - (A Comparative Study of Death as Understood in Korean Buddhism and Daesoon Jinrihoe: Focusing on the Concept of Reincarnation, Myeongbu, and the Ten Kings of the Afterworld)

  • 본 연구는 한국 불교와 대순진리회의 죽음관을 비교하는 것을 목적으로 삼는다. 한국 불교와 대순진리회는 죽음관을 설명하는 데 있어서 윤회(輪廻), 명부(冥府), 시왕(十王) 등의 다양한 개념들을 공동으로 사용한다. 그러나 불교와 대순진리회에서 이 개념들은 그 내용과 범주가 다를 뿐만 아니라, 각각의 교리체계 속에서 작동하는 방식과 중요성에서도 차이가 있다. 즉 불교와 대순진리회의 윤회 개념은 많은 비슷한 점들이 발견되기도 하지만 윤회의 기간, 또는 윤회 과정에 있어서 타력(他力)의 중요성과 관련된 차이점을 지적할 수 있다. 명부 관념의 경우는 비슷한 점들보다 차이점들이 우세를 차지하고 있다. 왜냐하면 대순사상에서는 불교의 명부설에서 나타난 시왕에 의해 이루어지는 심판 교설도 있기는 하지만, 대순진리회 교리체계 속에서 훨씬 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있는 소위 '명부공사'라는 또 하나의 새로운 교설도 있기 때문이다. 따라서 각각 전통에서 나타나는 윤회와 명부·시왕 관념들은 같은 개념과 범주를 갖는 것으로 파악할 수 없으며, 재정의할 필요가 있다. 다시 말하자면 불교의 윤회, 불교의 명부나 시왕과는 구분되도록 하여, '대순진리회 윤회', '대순진리회 명부·시왕'과 같은 새로운 개념으로 독립적인 사상 체계 맥락에서 재정의해야 하며, 더 넓은 종교 이론에 포함시켜야 한다.

대학도서관 무선인터넷 서비스에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Wireless Internet Service of University Library)

  • 본 연구는 무선인터넷의 개념 및 특성을 고찰하고 도서관 무선인터넷 서비스의 국내외 현황과 이용자들의 이용실태 및 요구사항 등을 분석하였다. 도서관 무선인터넷 서비스가 활성화되기 위해서는 도서관의 전략적인 계획 및 홍보, 학생들의 선호하는 유형의 무선인터넷 서비스의 우선 도입, 무선인터넷 요금과 직관되는 무선인터넷 접속 시간을 줄이기 위한 서비스 메뉴의 엄선, 그리고 마지막으로 대학 당국의 일관성 있는 재정 지원이 필요함을 제안하였다.

  • The explosive growth of e-marketplace transactions requires an appropriate trust measuring framework to protect involving transacting entities such as buyers and sellers. As a strategic competitive edge, e-marketplace service providers have been adopting various system features that make sure no one transacting entity takes a major risk in online transactions involved. In this paper, an improved trust measuring method using fuzzy theory for an e-marketplace is proposed. The proposed methodology incorporates fuzzy set and calculation concepts to help build trust matrices and models, which are used to measure the level of risk involved in a specific e-marketplace transaction concerned. The proposed framework can be utilized to optimize the transaction costs by recommending a differentiated transaction process according to the risk level involved in each online transaction.

패션기업의 패션정보 활용 (Fashion Firm's Utilization of Fashion Information)

  • In today's fashion industry, directions for new products and high value added of fashion goods, product changes according to cycles, the shortening of life cycles, added value, planned obsolescence, and presentation is focused on fashion trends that will be selected by many consumers at the point of selling time. Therefore fashion information poses great importance and its weight is growing bigger everyday. Fashion information recognized to be important is reflected practically in the prediction of fashion changes in the fashion industry; especially, it is the first stage of the merchandising process that is the course of new product development. Presently, with some differences according to the size and specialized area of a firm, domestic fashion menufacturers obtain information from sales data of competing brands and their own, market information, consumer information based on primary data, shared fashion trend information given by domestic fashion information providing companies. Firms can not produce differentiated images and product concepts using such shared information. Although the types, importance and reflection of used information vary according to merchandising processes, all experts engaging in the merchandising of fashion products use the same shared information.
