Effect of low-calcium fly ash on sulfate resistance of cement paste under different exposure conditions

  • Low-calcium fly ash (LCFA) were used to prepare cement/LCFA specimens in this study. The basic physical properties including water demand, fluidity, setting time, soundness and drying shrinkage of cement/LCFA paste were investigated. The effects of curing time, immersion time and wet-dry cycles in 3% $Na_2SO_4$ solution on the compressive strength and the microstructures of specimens were also discussed. The results show that LCFA increases the water demand, setting time, soundness of cement paste samples. 50% and 60% LCFA replacement ratio decrease the drying shrinkage of hardened cement paste. The compressive strength of plain cement specimens decreases at the later immersion stage in 3% $Na_2SO_4$ solution. The addition of LCFA can decrease this strength reduction of cement specimens. For all specimens with LCFA, the compressive strength increases with increasing immersion time. During the wet-dry cycles, the compressive strength of plain cement specimens decreases with increasing wet-dry cycles. However, the pores in the specimens with 30% and 40% LCFA at early ages could be large enough for the crystal of sodium sulfate, which leads to the compressive strength increase with the increase of wet-dry cycles in 3% $Na_2SO_4$ solution. The microstructures of cement/LCFA specimens are in good agreement with the compressive strength.

고강도 고로슬래그 혼합 시멘트 페이스트의 수화 및 포졸란 반응에 미치는 고로슬래그 미분말의 치환률과 분말도의 영향 (Effects of Replacement Ratio and Fineness of GGBFS on the Hydration and Pozzolanic Reaction of High-Strength High-Volume GGBFS Blended Cement Pastes)

  • 본 연구는 물-결합재비 20%를 가지는 고강도 고함량 고로슬래그 혼합 시멘트 페이스트의 유동성, 수화열, 응결시간 그리고 강도 발현 특성, 수화 및 포졸란 반응 특성 등을 실험을 통해 관찰하고, 이를 통해 고로슬래그 미분말의 치환률과 분말도가 수화 및 포졸란 반응에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 연구 결과에 따르면 물-결합재비가 낮은 고강도 배합에서는 고로슬래그 미분말로 시멘트를 대체함으로써 시멘트와 결합하는 자유수가 상대적으로 증가하는 dilution effect에 의해 시멘트의 초기 수화가 촉진되어 재령 3일부터 28일까지의 초기 강도는 보통 포틀랜드 시멘트만을 사용한 배합보다 더 높게 나타났다. 반면, 재령이 증가하면서 수화반응속도가 급격히 낮아지고, 고로슬래그 미분말로 시멘트를 대량 치환함에 따라 수산화칼슘이 충분히 공급되지 못하므로 포졸란 반응도가 낮아져 장기강도의 발현이 억제되는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 고로슬래그의 분말도가 높으면 자유수를 더 많이 흡착함으로써 유동성이 저하되고 수화도가 낮아져 강도가 오히려 저하되는 것으로 나타났다. 이와 같은 결과는 보통 강도 콘크리트와는 다른 경향을 나타내는 것으로 향후 콘크리트 배합에 대해 추가 검증이 필요하며, 고로슬래그 미분말을 대량 혼합한 고강도 콘크리트의 개발을 위해서는 장기 강도의 발현율을 더 높일 수 있는 방안에 대한 연구가 필요하다.

실리카 퓸이 알칼리 활성화 슬래그 모르타르의 강도특성에 미치는 영향 (Influence of Silica Fume on Strength Properties of Alkali-Activated Slag Mortar)

  • 이 연구는 물-결합재(W/B) 비에 따른 실리카 퓸이 알칼리 활성화 슬래그 시멘트(AASC)에 미치는 유동성과 강도 특성에 대한 연구이다. W/B비는 0.50에서 0.60까지 0.05 단위로 일정하게 변화시켰다. 실리카 퓸은 고로슬래그 중량의 0%에서 50%까지 치환시켰다. 활성화제는 수산화나트륨(NaOH)를 사용하였고, 농도는 3M로 하였다. W/B 비에 따른 강도는 1, 3, 7 그리고 28일을 측정하였다. 유동성 측정 결과는 실리카 퓸의 치환율이 증가할수록 감소하였다. 압축강도는 실리카 퓸의 치환율이 증가할수록 증가하였다. 또한 W/B 비가 증가할수록 모든 재령에서 강도는 감소하였다. 실리카 퓸은 W/B 비와 실리카 퓸의 치환율에 따라서 활성화 반응을 증대시켜 강도를 증가시키는 것을 알 수 있었다.

Influence of fly ash and GGBFS on the pH value of cement mortar in different curing conditions

  • The pH of cement-based materials (CBMs) is an important factor for their durability, sustainability, and long service life. Currently, the use of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) is becoming mandatory due to economic, environmental, and sustainable issues. There is a decreasing trend in pH of CBMs due to incorporation of SCMs. The determination of numerical values of pH is very important for various low and high volume SCMs blended cement mortars for the better understanding of different defects and durability issues during their service life. In addition, the effect of cement hydration and pozzolanic reaction of SCMs on the pH should be determined at initial and later ages. In this study, the effect of low and high-volume fly ash (FA) and ground granulated ballast furnace slag (GGBFS) cement mortars in different curing conditions on their pH values has been determined. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) was carried out to support the findings from pH measurements. In addition, thermal conductivity (k-value) and strength activity indices of these cement mortars were discussed. The results showed that pH values of all blended cement mortars were less than ordinary Portland cement (OPC) mortar in all curing conditions used. There was a decreasing tendency in pH of all mortars with passage of time. In addition, the pH of cement mortars was not only dependent on the quantity of Ca(OH)2. The effect of adding SCMs on the pH value of cement mortar should be monitored and measured for both short and long terms.

A study of the replacement of desulphurization slag for sand to ready-mixed soil materials (RMSM)

  • After the industrial of steelmaking by-products are processed properly, they can be used in civil engineering, not only as a substitute for natural resources and to reduce costs, but also to provide environmental protection. This study used different amounts (10%, 20%, 30%, 40%,and 50%) of desulphurization slag to replace natural fine aggregates in ready-mixed soil materials, and tested the physical and fresh properties (slump, slump flow, tube flow, initial setting time, and bleeding) and hardened properties (compressive strength, ball drop, ultrasonic pulse velocity) of the materials. The variations between the performances of the materials with different mix proportions were discussed. When desulphurization slag is used in RMSM, the workability can be enhanced obviously significantly. When the replacement of desulphurization slag is 50%, the slump flow is increased by 110mm compared with the control group, and the initial setting time increases as the replacement increases, because of bleeding. When the replacement is 10% and 20%, the compressive strength at various ages is higher than that of the control group. When the replacement is 10%, the compressive strength at 7 days is higher than that of the control group by 60%, and the ultrasonic pulse velocity is proportional to the compressive strength, which increases with age and decrease as the replacement increases. An appropriate replacement can effectively accelerate construction, and allow projects to be finished ahead of schedule; therefore, an appropriate replacement, is applicable for ready-mixed soil materials.

Alkali activated ceramic waste with or without two different calcium sources

  • The aim of this investigation is to prepare geopolymer resin by alkali activation of ceramic waste (AACW) with different sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and liquid sodium silicate (LSS) concentrations. In order to prepare geopolymer cement, AACW was replaced by 10 and 30 % by weight (wt.,) of concrete waste (CoW) as well as 10 and 30 wt., % ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS). The results showed that, the compressive strength of AACW increases with the increase of activator content up to 15:15 wt., % NaOH: LSS. All AACW hardened specimens activated by 3:3 (MC6), 6:6 (MC12), 12:12 (MC24) and 15:15 wt., % (MC30) NaOH: LSS destroyed when cured in water for 24h. The MC18 mix showed higher resistivity to water curing. The results also showed that, the replacement of AACW containing 9:9 wt., % NaOH: LSS (MC18) by 10 (MCCo10) and 30 (MCCo30) wt., % CoWdecreased the compressive strength at all ages of curing. In contrast, the MCCo10 mix showed the lower chemically combined water content compared to MC18 mix. The MCCo30 mix showed the higher chemically combined water content compared to MC18 and MCCo10 mixes. The compressive strength and chemically combined water of all AACWmixes containing GGBFS (MCS10 and MCS30) were higher than those of AACWwith no GGBFS (MC18). As the amount of GGBFS content increases the chemically combined water increases. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) proved that as the amount of CoWcontent increases, the degree of crystallinity increases. Conversely, the replacement of AACW by GGBFS leads to increase the amorphiticity character. The infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirms the higher reactivity of GGBFS compared to CoW as a result of successive hydration products formation, enhancing the compaction of microstructure as observed in scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

순환골재 미분말을 알칼리 자극제로 활용한 고로슬래그 미분말 혼입 콘크리트의 강도증진에 관한 실험적 연구 (A Experimental Study on the Strength Improvement of Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag Concrete Using Recycled Aggregate Powder as Alkali-activator)

  • 본 연구에서는 순환골재 생산시 발생되는 미분말을 고로슬래그 미분말의 알칼리 자극제로 활용하기 위해 배합수에 일부 혼입하여 강알칼리성을 띄게 한 후, 고로슬래그 미분말을 단계별로 치환한 콘크리트의 물리적 특성에 미치는 영향을 종합적으로 분석하였다. 그 결과 순환골재 미분말의 침지시간이 5시간일 때 전 시험편에서 가장 높은 pH가 측정되어 알칼리 자극제로서 활용가능성이 가장 높은 침지 시간임을 확인할 수 있었으며, 순환골재 미분말을 3% 혼입시킨 시험배합수가 1% 혼입시킨 배합수에 비하여 약 15mg/l이상의 $Ca(OH)_2$을 더 함유한 것으로 나타내었다. 순환골재 미분말을 혼입시킨 배합수를 사용한 경우 일반배합수를 사용한 경우와 비교하여 전 재령에서 강도발현이 더 우수한 것으로 나타났으며, 조기재령과 장기재령 모두 순환골재 미분말의 알칼리 자극효과가 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.

배합수 냉각방법 및 지연제 사용에 따른 서중 원전콘크리트의 특성 (Properties of Hot Weather Nuclear Power Plant Concrete with Water Cooling Method and Retarding used)

  • 온도차가 극심한 하절기와 동절기 콘크리트 타설의 경우 각종 균열의 발생, 콘크리트 품질불량, 내구성 및 강도저하 등 다양한 문제를 야기 시키고 있다. 특히 원전콘크리트의 경우 대량의 타설로 인한 4계절 연속시공이 이루어져 서중환경에서 콘크리트 품질관리에 많은 문제점이 발생되고 있는 실정이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 서중환경에서 많이 사용되어지는 프리쿨링 공법 중 배합수 냉각방법과 지연제 사용이 원전콘크리트의 특성에 미치는 영향을 검토하였다. 배합수 냉각방법은 냉수 $5^{\circ}C$와 Ice Flake 50% 치환사용 하였으며, 지연제 사용에 따른 원전콘크리트의 굳지 않은 콘크리트 및 경화 후 콘크리트의 특성을 검토하였다. 굳지 않은 콘크리트 특성으로는 슬럼프, 공기량, 응결시간 및 경화 후 압축강도를 측정하였으며, 단열거푸집을 제작하여 손실되는 열을 최소화시켜 각 온도조건하에서 수화열을 측정하였다. 실험결과, 슬럼프 및 공기량 경시변화 종료시간은 $20^{\circ}C$에서 120분, $40^{\circ}C$에서 40분으로 나타났으며, 관입 저항에 의한 응결시간은 배합수 냉각방법 및 지연제 사용 모두 초결과 종결을 지연시키는 것으로 나타났으나, 외기온도가 상승할수록 지연폭은 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 수화열은 배합수 냉각방법 모두 최고온도의 저감과 도달시간을 지연시키는 것으로 나타났으나, 지연제 사용의 경우 최고온도 저감효과는 없는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 재령별 압축강도의 경우 3일, 7일의 초기재령에서 Plain과 비교하여 낮은 강도 값을 나타내었으나, 재령 28일에서는 설계기준강도를 모두 만족시키는 것으로 나타났다.

아동실의 공간계획에 관한 연구 -유아기 아동을 중심으로- (A Study on Space Planning for Children's Room -Special Reference to Preschool)

  • The purpose of this study was to set up the objective standards of a space design for preschool children's room. In order to perform the above purpose, this study was organized into three sections. First, literature review to understand the relationship between preschool children's development and children's room, design elements and correlated variables of children's room. Second, survey research to seek a standard of children's room size, necessary furnitures, prefeerred colors and motifs. Third suggestions of objective and concrete alternative plan through the literature review and survey research. The major findings from the survey research were summarized as follows : 1) The mean size of contempory preschool children's room was 3.1 pyong and that of ldeal room was 4.7 pyong. 2) Necessary Furnitures with which more than two-thirds of parents want to furnish were bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers, toy shelves, toy boxes, book cases, chalkboard. Necessary furnitures for different ages were found to vary. For the age 2-5, the funitures for play were major, where as for the age 5-6, the furnitures for study were major. 3) The colors of contemporary preschool children's room were red, yellow, pink, blue, those of parent's favorites were Light colors(pink, skyblue, lemon yellow, Light green, Light purple). The rooms for boy were found with more cold colors, those for girl with more warm colors. 4) The motifs of contemporary preschool children's room were plants, lines, figures from cartoons of fairy tales. Boy's parents prefreerd space science and vehicles, while girl's parents preferred sky scenery and plants for their children's room.

Estimation of compressive strength of BFS and WTRP blended cement mortars with machine learning models

  • The aim of this study is to build Machine Learning models to evaluate the effect of blast furnace slag (BFS) and waste tire rubber powder (WTRP) on the compressive strength of cement mortars. In order to develop these models, 12 different mixes with 288 specimens of the 2, 7, 28, and 90 days compressive strength experimental results of cement mortars containing BFS, WTRP and BFS+WTRP were used in training and testing by Random Forest, Ada Boost, SVM and Bayes classifier machine learning models, which implement standard cement tests. The machine learning models were trained with 288 data that acquired from experimental results. The models had four input parameters that cover the amount of Portland cement, BFS, WTRP and sample ages. Furthermore, it had one output parameter which is compressive strength of cement mortars. Experimental observations from compressive strength tests were compared with predictions of machine learning methods. In order to do predictive experimentation, we exploit R programming language and corresponding packages. During experimentation on the dataset, Random Forest, Ada Boost and SVM models have produced notable good outputs with higher coefficients of determination of R2, RMS and MAPE. Among the machine learning algorithms, Ada Boost presented the best R2, RMS and MAPE values, which are 0.9831, 5.2425 and 0.1105, respectively. As a result, in the model, the testing results indicated that experimental data can be estimated to a notable close extent by the model.
