Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of individualized diet education program on dietary knowledge and self-care compliance among hemodialysis patients. Methods: The design of the study was quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group pre-post test design. Fifty patients were assigned to an experimental group and fifty patients were assigned to a control group. Individualized diet education program was applied to the experimental group once every two weeks for twelve weeks. Results: Dietary knowledge increased significantly in the experimental group when compared to the control group. Dietary self-care compliance improved significantly in the post-test of the experimental group, however, the difference was not significant. Conclusion: The individualized dietary education program was effective in improving dietary knowledge. The individualized diet education program needs to be incorporated as an important nursing intervention. Nurses should provide individualized diet education program for hemodialysis patients.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify factors that influence dietary compliance in patients with liver cirrhosis. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design and was conducted with a survey of 141 patients in liver cirrhosis who were treated at D-university hospital in Busan. For data analysis, descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and a multiple regression were performed using SPSS/WIN 20.0 Program for windows. Results: The mean score was 3.47 in dietary compliance. Dietary compliance had a positive correlation with self-efficacy, perceived-benefit medical staff support, age, drink or not but had a negative correlation with perceived barrier. As a result of multiple regression analysis, self-efficacy and perceived-benefits explained 30.1% (F=7.69, p<.001) of the variance of dietary compliance. Conclusion: Dietary compliance was suggested to consider self-efficacy and perceived-benefits when developing a nutritional education programs for patients with liver cirrhosis.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the retention effects of an individualized dietary education program for hemodialysis patients on diet knowledge, diet self-care compliance, and physiological indices, thus to find the most effective time period for re-education. Method: This study utilized one-group repeated pretest-posttest design. The participants were 52 hemodialysis patients in C hospital, Gyeonggi-Do. Data were collected at 4 and 12 weeks after the education from January through April 2016. Results: There was significant increases in diet knowledge even 12 weeks after the education (p= .007). Diet self-care compliance showed a significant increase at 4 weeks (p= .001), but a decrease at 12 weeks after the education. The level of blood natrium was significantly decreased between 4 and 12 weeks after the education (p= .006). The weight was significantly decreased at 12 weeks after the education. Conclusion: It has been identified that re-education for hemodialysis patients should be implemented between 4 and 12 weeks after education in order to maintain patients' diet self-care compliance, an ultimate aim of diet education. By helping them with their self-care compliance, the patients would maintain their physical and psychological function optimally, thus contributing to a better quality of life among hemodialysis patients.
The purpose of the study was to find the sociopsychological factors predicting the intention of compliance with the dietary regimen in diabetes with a questionnaire. Data were collected from 282 adult noninsulin-dependent diabetics in Seoul, Kyoggida, and Kyongsangbukdo in Korea. Stepwise multiple regression analysis was conducted with predictor variables from theories of the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Model, The Theory of Reasoned Action , and Social Support. The behavioral intention of compliance with the prescribed diet was the independent variable. Subjects norm self-efficacy knowledge about diet therapy, outcome expectation, relationship with medical team, threat of deterioration of disease, and social support were the independent variables, The mean score of behavior intention was high ie 35.3 out to 42. Subjective norm and self-efficacy were the significant variables to predict the intention of dietary compliance. These variables comprised 39% of the common variance. To increase dietary compliance by influence of the referents and improve self-efficacy significant referents must be included and concrete and practical methods to follow the dietary regimen must be provided in nutrition education.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of social support on compliance to dietary regimen in noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Two hundred eighty six adult non-insulin dependent diabetics from Seoul, Kyonggido, Kyongsangbukdo participated in the study. Researchers, dieticians, graduate students majoring in nutrition interviewed patients with a pre-structured questionnaire during June in 1998. The questionnaire included items about demographic factors, general characteristics about diabetes. social support, and compliance to dietary regimen. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson's Correlation were used to analyze the data. The mean scores of support from family was 27.0(0∼44). support from relatives, friends, and colleagues was 14.7(0∼32). Mean score of intangible support from family was 19.9(0∼32) and 12.0(0∼24) from relatives, friends, and colleagues. Mean score of tangible support from family was 7.1 (0∼12) and 2.6(0∼8) from relatives, friends, and colleagues. The mean scores for compliance to dietary regimen was 31.6(0∼42). Regardless of type and source, there was significant(p<0.01) correlation between social support and dietary compliance. Therefore, inclusion of family members in nutrition education for diabetics is essential. It is necessary to find ways to increase social support from relatives, friends, and colleagues.
This study was carried out to investigate the relationship between diabetic control and related factors of the practice of diet therapy which affects mostly diabetic patients’ dietary compliance. A questionnaire survey was conducted on 128 diabetic patients who had visited Internal medicine endocrinology clinic at University Medical Center of Daegu area. The questionnaires including clinical characteristics, meal regularity and food intake which shows dietary compliance, intrinsic barriers to the practice of diet therapy and knowledge of diet therapy were asked and analyzed. The factor which affects HbA1c was intrinsic barriers and HbA1c became higher as the level of intrinsic barriers was increasing. The education on diet therapy had no influence on the intrinsic barriers, but the level of knowledge on diet therapy was shown higher in the educated patients. The above results suggest that the practice of diet therapy should be leaded to develop behavioral aspects through resonable motivation on dietary compliance along with removing intrinsic barriers rather than simply providing information.
Objectives: The nutritional status of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy is closely related to the compliance of nutrition education. However, as chemotherapy is conducted repeatedly, compliance with nutrition management is lowered, leading to malnutrition. Malnutrition is related directly to the quality of life after surgery in cancer patients. Therefore, this study examined the factors related to compliance with nutrition management during chemotherapy. Methods: In this study, five subjects with colorectal cancer undergoing adjuvant chemotherapy were interviewed in-depth using the Giorgi study method. The contents of the nutrition education visits and in-depth interviews were transcribed in the language of the subject after recording, and the appropriateness of the data was improved by reflecting the subject's actions and facial expressions. Results: After conducting the in-depth interviews for each subject, the experience of the subject's diet and adjuvant chemotherapy was drawn into two domains, six elements, and 26 sub-elements. In the cognitive domain, the patients experienced physical and psychological changes, and the need for nutrition management was recognized by analyzing the dietary causes of the diseases. In the domain of practice, a knowing-doing gap was formed, unlike the patient's will. Factors that inhibited compliance with nutritional management included digestive problems, sensory changes, loss of appetite, and social interaction stress. Conclusions: Dietary management is very important for patients receiving periodic anticancer therapy, and step-by-step training and personal monitoring based on the chemotherapy order is necessary to maintain the patient's will and social and environmental support.
The study investigated medical treatment features of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, their further complications, levels of diet therapy education and the status of dietary compliance. The subjects were patients who came to oriental medicine clinics in Daejon. The percentage of male was 37.5% and female was 62.7% in the subject group's sex distribution. The outbreak of the disease was most common in the age of 50's. Also 40% of the subjects had been suffering for more than 5 years. 35.7% of men and 53.7% of women had family history. All the subjects had further complications, among them hypertension was the most common. Kidney, hepatic, vascular heart diseases were followed. 85.3% of the subjects answered they already had educations about diet therapy. Those educations were given in the public health center, general and private hospitals. 32% of subjects were not practicing diet therapy. The difficulties with which patients can be faced when they take dietary education were exchange(?exchanging?) food and calculating calories. Most of the subjects tend to overlook the importance of dietary habits and show low understanding to diet therapy, which leads to low participation rate of diabetes patients. Based on these results, therefore, we can conclude that diet therapy education to the patients should be more organized and easily practicable for them. To develop educational methods which can draw patients' attention and also be more effective is the most important task.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop and apply a video dietary instruction program for hemodialysis patients to understand dietary compliance as well as the effect on the physiological indicator. Methods: This is a quasi-experimental study of a nonequivalent control group pre-post test design. Data were collected from August 6, 2012 to January 10, 2013. Twenty patients were assigned to an experimental group and twenty-one patients were assigned to a control group. A video dietary instruction program was developed and applied only to the experimental group once a week for a total of 8 weeks. Dietary compliance and physiological indicators were subsequently measured. Results: Dietary compliance was improved in both groups over time. There was no significant change in the physiological indicator value in both groups, indicating that there was no correlation between the treatment type and time. Conclusion: The video dietary instruction program could not make a statistically significant change on the physiological indicator value of the experimental group; however, this change was maintained within the allowable limits. Therefore, the video dietary instruction program can be utilized continuously as a standardized nursing intervention program in order to maintain the dietary compliance of hemodialysis patients.
The purpose of this study was to investigate dietary habits and food compliance in stroke patients. One-hundred sixty eight elderly stroke patients and 97 young patients with first -ever stroke admitted to Asan Medical Center between 1994 and 1998 were studied. Using a structured interview, we assessed food intake. food consumption frequency and compliance to low salt, low meat hight fish and high fruit and vegetable diets. These results were analyzed with X$^2$, t-tests, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) using the SAS package program. Salted food intake and cholesterol-containing food frequency were increased whereas frequency of fruits and vegetables intake was decreased in young stroke patients compared to the elderly. Meat intake and cholesterol-containing food frequency were increased in the males compared to the females in elderly stroke patients. and fish intake and cholesterol-containing food frequency were higher in the males than the females in the young. In patients with high economic status, frequency of fruits and vegetables was elevated. Also compliance the low meat and high fruit and vegetable diet in young patients was lower than that in the elderly. When the life-style risk factors influencing the food intake of frequency of fruits and vegetables was affected by education in young stroke patients. In elderly stroke patients, meat intake frequency of cholesterol-containing foods and fruits and vegetables were influenced by sex and /or income. Our results suggest that dietary intake of salt meat ,cholesterol-containing foods. fruits and vegetables in stroke patients may vary with age, sex the presence of risk factors or economic status therefore guidelines and nutrition education should by formulated to prevent stroke recurrence based on dietary habits and risk factors of individual patients.
