A commercial nuclear power station contains at least two emergency diesel generates(EDG) to control the risk of severe core demage during the station blackout accidents. Therefore the reliability of the EDG's to start and load-run on demend must be maintained at a sufficiently high level. Until now, a simple assessment of start and load-run success rates was used to calculate the EDG's reliability. However, this method has been found to contain many defects. Recently, the work of Martz et al.(1996) proposed the use of the Bayes estimator to find the EDG's reliability. In this paper, we will propose confidence interval for the Bayes estimator, compare the above two methods and, using practical examples, illustrate why the Bayes estimator method is more reasonable in our situation.

A commercial nuclear power station contains at least tow emergency diesel generators(EDG) to control the risk of severe core damage during station blackout accidents. Therefore, the reliability of the EDG's to start and load-run on demand must be maintained at a sufficiently high level. Probabilistic safety assessments(PSA) are increasingly being used to quantify the public risk of operating potentially hazardous systems such as nuclear power reactors. In this paper, to perform PSA, we will introduce three different types of data and use Bayes procedure to estimate the error rate of nuclear power plant EDG, and using practical examples, illustrate which method is more reasonable in our situation.
An Emergency Diesel Generator (EDG) manufactured by a French company Wartsila SACM, is a tandem type engine, consisted of two 10 cylindered diesel engines on each side. Manual provided by the manufacturer states that engine bearing requires inspection every 15 years. However, it is difficult for an inspector to access through a manhole located in the lower compartment of engine. Furthermore, during a routine or scheduled maintenance, it is not possible to disassemble main engine bearing and crank shaft, and perform inspection. Two methodologies are suggested here to resolve the problem. One method is to lift the engine and partially perform the maintenance service, and the other method is to disassemble the engine completely and to perform maintenance service by the manufacturer. Pros and cons of two methodologies were thoroughly compared.

Excessive torsional vibrations from marine engine shafting systems can be reduced by using torsional vibration dampers. But in order to be tuned effectively, the dampers should be designed through the optimum design procedure. In this paper, the procedure to get the optimum values of system parameters of spring-viscous dampers using effective modal mass of inertia and stiffness is suggested and the damping is determined by the exact algebra optimization method. The validity of the suggested method is confirmed through the application to a 1800 kW four cycle diesel engine and generator system.
In a large diesel engine actuator position servo system, it is impossible to isolate an actuator fault from a load torque with conventional fault detection isolation (FDI) schemes because they are propagated through a channel. This paper deals with a parity equation based residual generation to isolate them in the system. The actuator fault is modelled by a multiplicative type fault that can be characterized as discrepancies between the nominal and actual plant parameters, whereas the load torque is modelled by an additive disturbance. The transformation implemented in the residual generator should be determined on-line to achieve the isolation. Simulation studies show the practical applicability of the FDI scheme.

This paper presents voltage and frequency control methods for a stand-alone Gasa Island Microgrid in South Korea that can be fully energized by renewable energy resources such as photovoltaic systems and wind turbines. To mitigate the variations of the output of renewable energy resources and supply more reliable electricity to customers, battery energy storage systems (BESSs) are employed in the stand-alone microgrid. The coordination between BESSs and pre-existing diesel generators is an important issue to manage the microgrid more securely. This paper presents voltage and frequency control schemes considering the coordination of BESSs and DGs. The effectiveness for the operating method is validated via simulation studies.

The release of polluting gases such as NO/sub x/ of SO/sub x/ to the atmosphere from ships is causing increasing concern. To reduce destruction to the marine environment, the value of the utilization of photovoltaic energy is highly appreciated since photovoltaic energy is and alternate clean energy source to fossil fuels. The use of a photovoltaic generating system to supplement diesel engine driven electric power system on ships has been studied. The design of the photovoltaic generating system based on a photovoltaic array is presented in this paper. The amount of NO/sub x/ and SO/sub x/ emission is found to be significantly reduced for a small vessel operated within a harbour after a photovoltaic generating system is installed to supplement the diesel engine generator system.

This paper presents the results of experimental studies of the mechanical characteristics of the Coil Spring and Viscous Damper system. The Coil Spring and Viscous Damper systems were selected for the isolation of Emergency Diesel Generator (EDG) which is located in Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). The Coil Spring and Viscous Damper systems were developed for, the operating vibration isolation and seismic isolation for scaled Model EDG System. The damping properties of the viscous damper changes as the variation of velocity. As a results, nonlinear damping characteristics of viscous damper system were evaluated.

Different methods are used for determining the output of engines to obtain the indicated horsepower by measuring the combustion pressure of cylinders, and to obtain the shaft horsepower by measuring the shaft torque. It is difficult to examine the shaft torque using the condition of the cylinder, and the most accurate method used for determining the combustion pressure involves examining the combustion state of the cylinder to evaluate the engine performance and analyze the combustion of the cylinder. During the measurement, the combustion pressure is the most important parameter used for accurately determining the cylinder angle because the cylinder pressure is indicated based on the angle of the crankshaft. In this study, an encoder was used as the crank angle sensor to measure the cylinder pressure on the generator engine of the actual operating ship. The reasons for the differences between the top dead center (TDC) recognized by the encoder (TDCencoder) and the TDC recognized by the compression pressure (TDCcomp) were considered. The dif erences between the TDCcomp and TDCencoder of the cylinders measured at idle running, 25 %, 50 %, and 60 % loads were analyzed to determine for the crankshaft production effect, the crankshaft torsion effect owing to the increased rotational resistance from the increased load, and the coupling damping effect between the engine and generator. It was confirmed that the TDC error occurred up to 3° crank angle as the load of the generator increased.
